Photo shows the Miri Court Complex. — Photo by Jenifer Laeng MIRI (July 17): A youth who rode his motorcycle recklessly here has been sentenced to one day in prison and fined RM5,000 in default three months' imprisonment. The 20-year-old was also disqualified from holding or applying for a driving licence for five years, effective from the date of sentencing today. Magistrate Ashok Linggam handed down the sentence on Mores Jegon, from Tudan Desaras Phase 6 here, after he pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. The Section carries a jail term of up to five years and a maximum fine of RM15,000, in addition to being disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for five years. A probationary driving licence may also be revoked upon conviction. According to the facts of the case, Mores rode his motorcycle recklessly and dangerously on a public road, disregarding the safety of other road users. He committed the offence at 11pm on May 31 along Jalan Miri-Bypass. Insp Mudzilawati Abdul Rahman prosecuted the case while Mores did not have legal representation. Photo shows the police crest. MIRI (July 8): A 35-year-old man was fined RM2,500 after pleading guilty at the Magistrates' Court here today to engaging in online gambling activities in public. Magistrate Ashok Linggam imposed the fine in default two months' jail on Polly Nyambang, who was charged under Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953. The Section provides for a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or imprisonment for up to six months, or both, upon conviction. According to the facts of the case, police raided an unnumbered shop on Jalan Desa Senadin 2C at around 3.45pm on July 6 and detained Polly on suspicion of involvement in online gambling activities. An inspection of his mobile phone revealed an online gambling app on display, and the device was seized as evidence. In mitigation, the unrepresented accused pleaded to the court for a lenient sentence as it was his first offence. The prosecution was handled by deputy public prosecutor Luqman Hakim Sahrol. MIRI (June 19): A senior citizen was fined RM500 in default one month's imprisonment by the Magistrates' Court here today for possessing money obtained through unlawful means. Magistrate Ashok Linggam imposed the fine on 75-year-old Mohamad Razali Mohamad from Jalan Jambatan Kampung Bakar Batu, Johor Bahru, after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 37(1) of the Minor Offences Ordinance Sarawak 1958. The Section provides for a jail term of up to three months and a fine of up to RM500 upon conviction. According to the case facts, Mohamad Razali was found in possession of RM1,500 in his bank account, which had been unlawfully obtained. The offence took place at a house along Jalan Taman Piasau 4, Piasau Garden here at around 11.06am on Oct 1, 2024 In mitigation, Mohamad Razali pleaded for leniency, citing that this was his first offence. MIRI (June 17): The Magistrates' Court here today fined a mule account owner RM500, in default one week in jail, for possessing money obtained through unlawful means five years ago. Magistrate Ashok Linggam imposed the fine on Megeruben, 29, of Ayer Itam, Penang, after he pleaded guilty to a charge framed under Section 37(1) of the Minor Offences Ordinance Sarawak 1958. The Section, typically applied in cases where an individual is found in possession of property or money reasonably suspected to have been obtained unlawfully, provides for up to three months' imprisonment or a fine of RM500 upon conviction. According to the facts of the case, Megeruben was found to be in possession of RM810 in his banking account, which had been unlawfully obtained. When questioned by the police, he failed to explain how he obtained the money. He committed the offence at a commercial bank branch here, at around 2.28pm on Feb 4, 2020. Man jailed three days for failing to produce MyKad in Miri

File photo for illustration purposes MIRI (June 16): The Magistrates' Court here today sentenced a man to three days' imprisonment for failing to produce his identity card when requested by the police. Magistrate Ashok Linggam handed down the sentence on Emmanuel Harry, 23, from Kampung Lembah Hijau, Jalan Riam, after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 25(1)(n) of the National Registration Regulations 1990. The offence carries a penalty of up to three years imprisonment, or a fine of up to RM20,000, or both upon conviction. According to the facts of the case, Emmanuel committed the offence at around 7.30pm on June 12 at Tadika Sedidik in Kampung Lembah Hijau, where he failed to produce his MyKad when requested by a police officer. In mitigation, the accused pleaded for leniency, citing this was his first offence and requested to be placed under a Compulsory Attendance Order (PKW). Ashok rejected the request as he noted that a PKW was not suitable for this offence and that the period of remand already served by the accused was sufficient as punishment. Inspector Mudzilawati Abdul Rahman prosecuted the case while the accused was unrepresented by legal counsel.
