Standings unchanged; league breaks for World Cup qualifiers

Jordan Times11-03-2025
AMMAN — The CFI Jordan Professional Football League's breaks until March 26 as the national team goes on duty for Round 3/Group B qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
Clubs ended week 16 with Hussein maintaining their lead, defeating Ma'an 4-1 as they confidently march towards retaining their title with an unbeaten record so far, while Faisali beatWihdat 1-0 in the most anticipated match of the week.
Wihdat's loss sparked outrage among fans and club members who called for an assessment to put back things in order. In addition to losing the Jordan Super Cup title to Hussein and the Shield title to Salt, now they are trailing 8 points behind in the fight for the league title which seems to be slipping away. In addition, they also lost on the regional level, exiting the Asian Football Confederation and Asian Champions League Two in the Round of 16.
During the past week, some teams improved their record boosting their eventual standings like Aqaba who upset Salt 2-1 and consolidated their spot away from the relegation zone, while Faisali, who last week beat Ahli, appeased their fans with their second win as they try to make up for a season of fluctuating performances.
In other league results, Shabab Urdun beat Ahli 2-0, Ramtha beat Sarih 2-1, Jazira beat Mughayer Sarhan 1-0.
Wihdat's Mohannad Simreen is still the top scorer so far with 11 goals trailed by Sarih's Mohammad Akash with 9.

New Zealand excited by return of forgotten midfielder Thomas

Ammon News - After six injury-blighted years in Dutch club soccer, midfielder Ryan Thomas is set to make his long-awaited New Zealand return in a pair of friendlies against Australia next month to the delight of All Whites coach Darren Bazeley. Thomas, whose last international appearance was a friendly against Ireland in late-2019, was named in Bazeley's squad for the trans-Tasman clashes on Tuesday. The 30-year-old's return comes after a rare period of fitness that has seen him recover a starting role for PEC Zwolle in the Dutch top tier. Having the 19-cap All White fit and firing would be a major boost for New Zealand ahead of their return to the World Cup at the 2026 finals in North America. "It's like a new signing, almost, which we don't get, obviously, because we're not a club team," Bazeley told New Zealand media on Tuesday. "Having somebody of the calibre and quality of Ryan coming back into the team is great." Hailing from Te Puke, a small town renowned in New Zealand for its kiwifruit, Thomas made his professional debut for PEC Zwolle as a 19-year-old winger before reinventing himself as a holding midfielder. A move to Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven in 2018 was hailed in New Zealand as one of the biggest signings in its football history. It all went sour within days, though, as Thomas ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament at training and spent the next few seasons battling a succession of knee problems until his release from PSV in 2022. He returned to his first club but the injuries continued at PEC Zwolle, with another round of knee surgery wiping out much of 2024. Amid his struggles, Thomas opted out of playing for international football but was among the first to congratulate captain Chris Wood when the All Whites sealed their 2026 World Cup qualification in March. Bazeley has been patient with Thomas, saying he would keep the door open as long as he could before the global showpiece in the United States, Canada and Mexico. But he was pleasantly surprised the midfielder had made himself available for the September 5 and September 9 matches against Australia, having hoped he might return for away fixtures against Poland and Norway in October. "He was like, 'Man, I've never played against Australia and I really want to play against them.' So yeah, he's in, which is great," said Bazeley. New Zealand skipper Wood, who scored a double in Nottingham Forest's Premier League opener against Brentford, was also included in Bazeley's squad for the trans-Tasman "Soccer Ashes" inspired by the cricket contest between Australia and England. Jordanian tennis player refuses to play against ‘Israeli' player

Jordanian tennis player Abdullah Shelbayh, 21, has withdrawn from the 50-point Hersonissos Challenger tournament in Greece after being drawn to face an 'Israeli' player in the Round of 32. Shelbayh's withdrawal was widely praised, and the official website of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) listed Italian player Filippo Moroni as his replacement. Shelbayh's move follows similar actions by other Jordanian athletes who have refused to compete against 'Israeli' players. Last month, the Jordanian youth national basketball team forfeited a game against 'Israel' at the World Cup in Switzerland, resulting in an automatic 20-0 loss. Shelbayh recently rose 33 places in the international rankings, reaching a world ranking of 353. The jump came after he won seven of his last 10 matches in three competitions, most recently the Grodzisk Mazowiecki tournament in Poland.
