Jordanian tennis player refuses to play against ‘Israeli' player

Jordanian tennis player Abdullah Shelbayh, 21, has withdrawn from the 50-point Hersonissos Challenger tournament in Greece after being drawn to face an 'Israeli' player in the Round of 32.
Shelbayh's withdrawal was widely praised, and the official website of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) listed Italian player Filippo Moroni as his replacement.
Shelbayh's move follows similar actions by other Jordanian athletes who have refused to compete against 'Israeli' players.
Last month, the Jordanian youth national basketball team forfeited a game against 'Israel' at the World Cup in Switzerland, resulting in an automatic 20-0 loss.
Shelbayh recently rose 33 places in the international rankings, reaching a world ranking of 353. The jump came after he won seven of his last 10 matches in three competitions, most recently the Grodzisk Mazowiecki tournament in Poland.

Late Salah, Chiesa goals give Liverpool 4-2 win in thrilling opener

Ammon News - Liverpool talisman Mo Salah and substitute Federico Chiesa struck late goals as the Premier League champions began the defence of their title by beating Bournemouth 4-2 in a thriller on the opening night of the season at Anfield on Friday. On a bittersweet evening charged with emotion after the July death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, newcomer Hugo Ekitike bagged a goal on his league debut to put the hosts ahead after 37 minutes and Cody Gakpo doubled the lead in the 49th. But Antoine Semenyo, who was the target of racist abuse in the first half that led to a pause in the game, pulled one back for the visitors in the 64th minute and completed a double 12 minutes later to rock Liverpool and shock the home fans. However, Chiesa came off the bench and sent the Anfield faithful away happy with an 88th-minute strike after goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic swatted away a ball into the box by Salah, who scored himself deep into added time to wrap up the three points. "Fantastic," Liverpool boss Arne Slot said of Italian forward Chiesa's goal. "He came in in the end because we needed a goal. For him then to score in such a moment is special. "It's even more special because the fans have supported him. It's nice he gives them something in return with a great goal." With Liverpool ahead again, Salah chased the ball past the defence before cutting inside and firing into the bottom corner with a 94th-minute goal that put the Egyptian joint-fourth with Andy Cole on the all-time Premier League scorers' list with 187. An emotional Salah pointed to the heavens and flapped two hands to mimic Jota's shark goal celebration. He headed for The Kop stand after the final whistle, and wiped away tears while applauding the fans who were singing their Jota song to the tune of "Bad Moon Rising." MINUTE'S SILENCE The night started with an emotional minute's silence for Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who died in a car crash. Fans fought back tears as they sang "You'll Never Walk Alone." Ekitike, who has joined from Eintracht Frankfurt, was the most impressive of Slot's close-season signings in a spending spree topping 300 million pounds ($406.53 million). "Obviously I think it was a good performance, I could do better," said the French forward who held up two fingers in one hand, and made a zero with the other in a tribute to Liverpool's Jota, who wore number 20 after his goal. "But the most important thing was winning, the mentality we showed. Obviously we wanted to win tonight for the people who came and for Diogo," added the 23-year-old forward. The game was halted for several minutes after Bournemouth's Ghana international Semenyo reported the racist abuse. "It's totally unacceptable," Bournemouth captain Adam Smith said. "Kind of in shock to be honest that it happened. In this day and age it shouldn't be happening. "I don't know how Ant's played on to be honest and come up with those goals ... Something has to be done. We'll support him in there and hopefully he'll be ok." Reuters

‘Israelis' outraged over UEFA's 'Stop killing children' banner

UEFA has come under fire after displaying a banner reading 'Stop killing children. Stop killing civilians' ahead of Wednesday's Super Cup final between Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur at Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy. The banner, part of a UEFA Foundation for Children initiative, was carried by nine children who are refugees in Italy from conflict zones including Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Palestine, and Ukraine. UEFA shared the moment on its official social media accounts, writing: 'From the UEFA Super Cup in Udine, the message is loud and clear.' Although the message did not mention 'Israel', Gaza, or Palestine, many 'Israelis' considered it pro-Palestinian and accused UEFA of antisemitic political messaging. Some began sharing images of children allegedly killed by Hamas on October 7, claiming UEFA had failed to show similar solidarity with 'Israeli' victims. 'These are Liel and Yanai, 12-year-old siblings murdered by Hamas on October 7. Your banners were never for them,' one user wrote. Didn't see you campaigning for these children or their mother. — Fusilier (@firstfusilier) August 14, 2025 On the other hand, many responded to the banner with anger, saying the message was weak since it failed to mention 'Israel' or call it out as the perpetrator of genocide. Say the name, it is Israel. — Mesut Öcal (@Mesut___Ocal) August 13, 2025 The banner came just days after UEFA was criticized for a separate incident where the organization had posted a tribute to Suleiman Al-Obeid, a former Palestinian footballer killed in Gaza, calling him the 'Palestinian Pelé.' High-profile figures, including Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah and former BBC presenter Gary Lineker, challenged UEFA over the tribute, with many of thousands of comments questioning why it omitted details about the circumstances of his death.

Jordan Football Association Praises Government Decisions Supporting National Football - Jordan News

The Jordan Football Association (JFA) has expressed its appreciation for the decisions issued by the Cabinet in its Wednesday session, chaired by Prime Minister Dr. Jafar Hassan. The decisions include exempting the JFA from sales tax on revenues generated from sponsorship and marketing contracts, broadcasting rights, and match ticket sales, in addition to a set of financial and technical support measures. اضافة اعلان JFA Secretary-General Samar Nassar, on behalf of the association led by HRH Prince Ali bin Al Hussein, thanked the government for its continuous support of Jordanian football. She noted that the decisions follow the Prime Minister's visit to the association last month and align with royal directives to bolster football in the kingdom, especially after the historic achievement of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. 'These decisions represent a significant financial and moral boost for the association, encouraging investment in the sports sector and increasing revenue to achieve financial sustainability and expand the association's activities and projects in the future, in order to achieve further accomplishments across all levels,' Nassar said. She praised the government measures for developing the football system, emphasizing that exempting revenues from sponsorship, broadcasting rights, and ticket sales from taxation will provide the association and clubs with a strong incentive to enhance their financial resources, making the sector more attractive for sports investment. Nassar added that the tax exemptions, the doubling of the budget starting next year, and support for youth centers constitute strategic steps reflecting the government's belief in the importance of sports and its role in enhancing Jordan's international presence. These measures will also help sustain the association's activities and expand talent development programs across all governorates. She concluded by affirming that the government's continuous support serves as a major motivation to continue working diligently to achieve further accomplishments that raise the nation's flag in international arenas.
