A Saskatoon man reported missing from a Mexican beach has been found dead
A Saskatoon man reported missing from a beach in Puerto Escondido, Mexico over the weekend has been found dead.
Authorities began their search for 31-year-old Braydon Bretzer on Sunday evening after he failed to return from a swim.
According to several Mexican media sources, witnesses saw Bretzer and a 40-year-old American named Chris Ankele enter the water on Sunday afternoon at Zicatela Beach, which authorities say is known for its strong currents and is not suitable for swimming.
Oaxacan state officials spent several days searching the area. Bretzer's body was reportedly found on Tuesday. The other swimmer, Ankele, has not yet been recovered.
Global Affairs Canada told CTV News it was aware of the death and said consular officials are in contact with local authorities to provide help where they can.
Here in Saskatoon, a friend of Bretzer's has launched a GoFundMe to support the family's expenses as they arrange to return his body.
Graeme Bouvier, who started the fundraiser, says Bretzer 'lived life to the fullest.'
'He had a contagious energy, and a heart that made space for everyone. He was loved by many — he made people feel seen, valued, and cared for,' Bouvier wrote.
He says Bretzer's family has pledged to donate any funds in excess of their $30,000 goal to his favourite local charities, like SCAT.
Over $22,000 had been raised by Friday afternoon.

Age-progressed drawing released in B.C. cold case

Mounties in Salmon Arm, B.C., are asking the public for any information that could help find a man who has been missing for 23 years. Raymond 'Ray' Kohout was last seen on April 29, 2002, riding a blue mountain bike on the Trans-Canada Highway between Salmon Arm and Canoe, according to police. His bike was found between Salmon Arm and Sicamous on Sept. 11 of that year. The nurse, husband, and father of three has not been seen or heard from since. Police released an age-progressed sketch of Kohout on Monday, showing what he may look like today. Kohout was born in 1960, so he would be 64 or 65 now. Woman's body recovered from Okanagan Lake, RCMP say
Okanagan Lake is seen in this undated image. (Shutterstock) Authorities have recovered the body of a woman who went missing while kayaking in Okanagan Lake over the weekend. Vernon North Okanagan RCMP said someone spotted the woman swimming with her kayak near the Everly Recreation Site on Friday, but she never returned to shore. She was reported missing Saturday morning, and officers recovered her body that afternoon. 'No criminality is suspected,' Const. Chris Terleski told CTV News, in an email. The B.C. Coroners Service is conducting a fact-finding investigation to determine 'how, where, when and by what means the person came to their unexpected death,' Terleski said. The witness who spotted the woman Friday said she was not wearing a life jacket. Authorities have not shared the name of the deceased.
