
Meituan's first-quarter revenue jumps 18% amid increased competition
Meituan posted an 18.1 per cent year-on-year surge in revenue for the first quarter, as it seeks to maintain its dominant position on the mainland in the food delivery market amid new competition.

Meituan's revenue for the three months through March was 86.6 billion yuan (US$12 billion). Net profit reached 10.1 billion yuan, up 87.3 per cent year on year.
The Beijing-based firm said in a statement that its instant commerce business 'Instashopping maintained robust growth trajectory, winning increasing consumer recognition and showcasing the immense potential of on-demand retail'.
Meituan's results came in above expectations of 85.44 billion yuan in revenue and 8.63 billion yuan in profit, according to analysts polled by Bloomberg, offering a positive start to 2025 as it faces heated competition in the so-called instant commerce market, which in addition to food makes a slew of everyday consumer items available for delivery by courier, often within an hour.
Chinese e-commerce giant
JD.com moved into food delivery in February, after already offering instant delivery of other items. Rival
Alibaba Group Holding , owner of the Post, has also doubled down on its instant commerce business, leveraging its Ele.me food delivery riders and
Taobao shopping app.

Both companies have initiated aggressive campaigns through the use of subsidies and other promotions to grab a slice of the market that has long been dominated by Meituan.

China urged to overhaul its tax system to boost consumption
As China seeks public feedback on the implementation of its recently passed value-added tax (VAT) law, a group of economists has urged the government to introduce more radical reforms to give local authorities stronger incentives to spur consumption and rein in their excessive industrial expansion. The new VAT law, which is due to come into force next year, introduces a range of technical changes to the tax code that bring China more into line with international practices, but the economists argue that a bolder overhaul of the system could be key to helping the country rebalance its economy. China's current VAT system – the country's largest source of tax revenue – undermines Beijing's efforts to develop a more consumption-driven economy by creating an incentive structure that dampens officials' 'enthusiasm for fostering consumer markets', the economists said in an article published in early August. The main issue with the system is that it allocates tax revenue to regions based on where a product or service was produced, rather than where it was consumed, according to the paper co-authored by Sheng Songcheng, a former head of statistics at China's central bank, and two researchers at the CEIBS Lujiazui International Institute of Finance. The policy effectively rewards regions with large industrial bases, which encourages officials to pursue 'a local development model that overemphasises investment while neglecting consumption, exacerbating overcapacity and hindering economic transformation and upgrading', the authors said. While the system was effective in supporting local government finances during an earlier period in China's development, 'its drawbacks have become increasingly apparent as consumption gradually emerges as the main growth driver', they added in the article posted online by the China Chief Economist Forum think tank. To fix the problem, the economists called for a revamp of the current allocation system to ensure that more tax revenue is directed to locations where consumption occurs.

Global investors pivot to China's US$25 trillion bond market amid de-dollarisation trend
Global investors' search for alternatives to US-dollar assets is driving more capital into China's domestic bond market, according to UBS. A new wave of increased allocations to the Chinese bond market had just begun and was expected to continue if the trend of de-dollarisation continued, said Raymond Gui, Asia head of fixed-income portfolio management in the Swiss bank's asset-management arm. UBS launched its first yuan-denominated bond fund in 2018. Foreign investors, mostly institutional investors including central banks, insurance companies and pension funds, held US$587 billion in yuan-denominated Chinese bonds as of the end of May, rebounding from a low of US$429 billion in March 2023. The holdings are down about 6 per cent from a peak in January 2022. The Chinese bond market, at US$25 trillion, remains the world's second largest after the US. Foreign holdings, accounting for about 2.3 per cent of the market, are mainly in Chinese government bonds, policy bank bonds and local government bonds. Foreign investors can buy into the market through a few different channels, including the Bond Connect mechanism and China's interbank bond market, as well as the Qualified Foreign Institutional Investor and Renminbi Qualified Foreign Institutional Investor schemes. Beijing regulators have further simplified the procedures for foreign investments in China this year in an effort to attract more global investors. Major bond indices including the Bloomberg Global Aggregate Index, the JP Morgan Government Bond Index, and the FTSE Russell World Government Bond Index began to incorporate Chinese bonds into their global benchmarks around 2019.
