The Nova Scotia government is calling on residents with personal, professional or community-based experience surrounding gender-based violence to apply to join the new ministers' table on gender-based violence.
The ministers' table is led by Becky Druhan, Nova Scotia's attorney general and minister of justice, and Leah Martin, minister for the Advisory Council on the Status of Women.
The table will bring together up to 25 community members to advise the government on ways to prevent gender-based violence and support people who are affected by it.
'This is an opportunity to bring voices together from across the province, especially those on the front lines and those with lived experience,' said Druhan. 'When we listen directly to those doing the work and living the realities, we can better identify and take actions that lead to real change.'
The 2025-2026 provincial budget includes more than $100 million to address gender-based and intimate partner violence, the ministers' table is part of this effort.
Once selected, the members of the table will meet at least four times per year.
The table will work with representatives from L'nu Affairs, African Nova Scotian Affairs, the Office of Equity and Anti-Racism, the Office of Addictions and Mental Health.
It will also work with the departments of Opportunities and Social Development, Health and Wellness and Education and Early Childhood Development.
'We're not starting from scratch. Advocates, professionals and service providers have been doing this work for years in communities across Nova Scotia,' said Martin. 'Their input and expertise will not only guide government's efforts, but also how we work together to advance real, lasting change for victims, survivors and communities.'
In September 2024, the Nova Scotia government declared intimate partner violence an epidemic.
Since October 2024, police in Nova Scotia have reported the deaths of at least seven women and one man allegedly from intimate partner violence.

Arson squad investigating after two vehicles torched in Côte Saint-Luc

The Montreal police (SPVM) arson squad is investigating after two vehicles were set ablaze in the on-island suburb of Côte Saint-Luc early Sunday morning. Police responded to several 911 calls at around 1:25 a.m. and found an SUV on fire on Mapleridge Avenue and another car on fire in the parking lot of an apartment building near Caldwell Avenue. 'The Montreal fire department quickly arrived on the scene to extinguish the fires,' said SPVM spokesperson Caroline Chevrefils, adding that another nearby car sustained 'significant damage.' 'Certain elements at the scene suggest that the fire was of a criminal nature,' said Chevrefils. The two vehicles were towed for analysis, and the SPVM's arson squad is investigating the fires. There were no injuries or arrests.

Alberta 811 health line hits milestone in redirecting non-urgent calls

Public health officials are celebrating a milestone for a provincewide health hotline. Two years ago, Alberta Health Services created a program that lets 911 operators offload non-urgent calls to Health Link 811, a separate health line that lets people speak with a registered nurse and other health-care providers. AHS reported on Wednesday that the program had now redirected more than 50,000 calls. " It's all about helping to free up those ambulances," said Edith Friesen, a manager with Health Link. She said it's been a priority to make sure people receive the right kind of response, in order to properly manage resources. According to AHS, the program is meant to help take pressure off of emergency responders and helps people with health issues who aren't sure what to do. When the program started, AHS estimated that up to 20 per cent of 911 calls didn't require an ambulance. On top of nurses, Friesen says Health Link is also equipped with mental health professionals, social workers, and teams that deal with dementia, rehab and Indigenous health. The 50,000 milestone comes slower than initially thought. When the program launched in February 2023, the provincial health provider said the program would transfer over 40,000 calls each year. While it took longer to reach the 50,000 milestone, Friesen said the program has been making a difference in saving up ambulances for life-threatening calls. "It really has been successful," Friesen said. "In terms of we know right now that over 50,000 ambulances were used for life-threatening emergencies and not for situations where it wasn't."
