Eddie Howe handed injury boost after Arsenal defeat as Newcastle boss continues to juggle absence of wantaway striker Alexander Isak

Daily Mail2 days ago
Eddie Howe has been handed a major injury boost having suffered a scare in Newcastle's pre-season friendly against Arsenal on Sunday.
The Magpies were playing their third match of the summer in Singapore, with Howe using two different sides throughout the game to allow his players to get some more minutes into their legs.
They lost for the second match in a row, however, going down 3-2 just a matter of days after their shock 4-0 thrashing by Celtic in less-than ideal preparations.
In Newcastle's side, William Osula led the line from the start of the game, while 18-year-old Sean Neave came off the bench in the second half with Alexander Isak still absent.
Howe has ruled out the possibility that the Swede could join up with Newcastle's travelling part y next week after Mail Sport exclusively revealed he is keen to explore options away from the club - but one star that was present raised injury concerns when he appeared to limp off the field.
Defender Sven Botman has been back in action after long injury lay-off last season, but fans feared the worst when he seemed to have picked up an issue against Arsenal.
Botman was seen speaking to Howe as he left the pitch, looking in discomfort as he made his way to the dressing room.
After undergoing cruciate surgery in March 2024, he didn't play again until December last year but was soon back on the sidelines with a broken kneecap in February.
After a month out, he missed another 48 days between early March and late April with another knee issue, meaning he has played just 25 Premier League games across the last two seasons.
Howe, though, seemed to ease injury fears after the game against Arsenal, saying: 'He came off and said his groin was tight. Fingers crossed he's OK.'
Mail Sport's Craig Hope, meanwhile, reported from Singapore that Botman was seen walking without any obvious limp, and Dan Burn said that he would probably have stayed on the field if the game was competitive.
Anthony Elanga and Jacob Murphy were on the scoresheet for Newcastle, while Mikel Merino and Martin Odegaard bagged for Arsenal, with Alex Murphy also scoring an own goal.
Viktor Gyokeres was unveiled before kick off, with the likes of Martin Zubimendi and Bukayo Saka also starting for the Gunners.

Bryan Mbeumo relishing chance to play with Bruno Fernandes at Manchester United

Cameroon winger Mbeumo, who scored 20 goals and provided seven assists for Brentford in the Premier League last season, signed a five-year contract last week to become United's third summer signing. When asked on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast who he was most looking forward to playing alongside, Mbeumo told the former United defender: 'Of course, Bruno. Of course, yeah. 'Everyone sees in the past years. He can shoot, he can cross, he can do crazy ball. Yeah, for a striker, you just enjoy that.' Mbeumo is hoping to nurture a chemistry on and off the training pitch with United's Portuguese talisman before the club launch the 2025-26 campaign at home against Arsenal on August 17. 'I think it's a little bit of everything. You earn experience from everyone. So it's always good to speak to someone like this,' Mbeumo said. 'But at the end, I think on the pitch, when you're smart like he is, I think you don't even need to think a lot. You just need to make the run and he's going to play you in the right space every time. 'But of course, you can have a little discussion to make him know how I prefer the balls and how I'm feeling the best to have the ball. The wait is over. — Manchester United (@ManUtd) July 21, 2025 'But at a certain point, there is only one way, even if it's not the one you like, you have to do the run and he's going to put the ball in a good position.' Mbeumo's arrival at Old Trafford follows the signings of Wolves forward Matheus Cunha and Paraguay left-back Diego Leon, from Cerro Porteno. United have recently been linked with Ollie Watkins – RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko is also a reported target – and Mbeumo described his former Brentford team-mate as the 'complete striker'. Mbeumo said of Watkins: 'I think he's really complete. He's like a complete striker. He can do a lot of things. 'He can drop with the set or going in behind. And I think this is really good for me or for a winger because you can use his space to fit in there. And he can combine as well. So, I think it's really good.'

In 64 combined appearances in the Premier League last term, the duo managed just seven goals. So it is no surprise to see Man Utd keen on changing their entire front-three after the signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. The Red Devils have reportedly reached out to Sesko's representatives to sell him the project. Man Utd feel confident that the RB Leipzig man would choose Old Trafford over Newcastle. But the Toon will be able to comfortably afford the £70million-rated goalscorer should they lose Alexander Isak to Liverpool. Man Utd also have their eye on Aston Villa star Watkins, who has a £60m price tag on his head. But Old Trafford chiefs reckon they could sign him for closer to £45m. Looking at the stats over the last two league seasons, Sesko has found the back of the net 27 times and Watkins has scored 35 goals. And he has a better minutes per goal record of 145 to 167. But Watkins registers way more assists with 21 compared to just seven and he takes more shots. There is very little to separate them in the air and on pressing statistics. Sesko, 22, has years on his side and is seen as one for the future with potential sell on value. But Watkins, 28, is already Premier League proven and would be considerably cheaper than Sesko. New signing Mbeumo played alongside the England striker at Brentford and hinted he would love to be reunited. He told the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast: "Ollie is a complete striker. Marcus Rashford may have made his debut as a sub for the Catalan giants in Sunday's friendly match against Vissel Kobe in Japan. But until the England star finally makes his competitive debut following his year-long loan deal, the answer will be found closer to home. For it is newly-signed Huddersfield midfielder Marcus McGuane who boasts that Anglo-Spanish claim to fame. McGuane, 26, is member of an elite club of Englishmen who have graced Barcelona's famous blue and red colours — led most famously by Three Lions legend Gary Lineker. Not so long ago McGuane, who has just joined the League One Terriers from Bristol City, was rubbing shoulders with Barca superstar Lionel Messi and his all-conquering pals. And the Arsenal academy product does not need reminding just how incredible it sounds — his own little lad remains to be convinced that dad is not making it all up. McGuane told SunSport: 'My son just got into football massively, and when I tell him I trained with Messi and stuff like that, he can't believe it. 'Even when I show him the photo of me at practice with Messi, he still can't believe it. I clearly just can't win! It's something I can hold fondly in my memory bank. 'For people looking in from the outside, they probably think it's bigger than how it feels for me — but it was still a fantastic time in my life.' Marcus Rashford can't contain his excitement after agreeing Barcelona transfer Life came at Woolwich lad McGuane fast in his teenage years and he left Arsenal to go to Spain at the age of 18 after making two senior Gunners appearances in the Europa League. He added: 'I was a young boy who grew up in Woolwich with dreams of wanting to be a pro footballer. 'I had to pinch myself when I found myself in the changing room and training with the likes of Messi, Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta. 'But I have to admit it was all a case of a bit too much too soon for me, because there so much to deal with. 'The timing probably just wasn't right. I wasn't mature enough to handle being away from my home, friends and family. 7 7 McGuane has recently joined Huddersfield Town Credit: INSTAGRAM @htafc 'But I learned lots of lessons. It showed for this humble lad from Woolwich what's possible when you put your head down. 'It didn't really go the way I wanted and it reached a point where I wanted to come home. But I'll only speak positively about a great period in my life.' As for what it will take for his Manchester United A-lister namesake to make it at the Nou Camp, McGuane reckons Rashford must embrace his new surroundings. McGuane certainly speaks from experience, even if he was limited to a solitary first-team game after moving from Arsenal in 2018. While at Barcelona, he was loaned to Telstar, then joined Nottingham Forest and Oxford United before going to Bristol. I had to pinch myself when I found myself in the changing room and training with the likes of Messi, Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta. Marcus McGuane McGuane is the first to point out he spent most of his Barca time as a reserve. But he did make a substitute appearance for the senior side in a Catalan Super Cup game against local rivals Espanyol in March 2018. And he still saw enough over the course of two seasons to be a good judge of what it will takes for Rashford, 27, to prosper after several turbulent years at Old Trafford. McGuane added: 'On the field, I'm sure he'll hit the ground running and give a good representation of himself. 'He is a top player with fantastic qualities with lots to give his team — so I'm sure he'll thrive. 'Off the field, I'd recommend he immerses himself in the local culture and dives into his new community. 7 'Family and friends will be crucial so he settles down and makes it feel like home as quickly as possible. 'Being in a different country, picking up a different language and adapting to a different culture, you'll need a good support network.' McGuane and his son are tickled by the Messi photo and the fact that his namesake has followed his path but their journeys to Barca could not be more different. The London player said: 'I found it quite funny that there'll be another Marcus on the Barca books. 'The chances of us having the same first name are slim — but unlike me, Rash has got experience on his side. 'He's blessed with experience of top leagues and top competitions, so he'll take things in his stride. 'And playing with better players should bring the best out of him — and the new environment will help. 'For me, it was my first time away from home since the age of 12 and the first time being abroad officially by myself. 'Now I can't wait to see the other, more famous footballing Marcus start playing with a smile on his face again.' 7 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW
