Back in the game
SAN ANTONIO – A decade has passed since Matt Viator sat in front of the Southland Conference media and answered questions about an upcoming season.
A lot has changed since then.
No longer are the Cowboys the top dog in the league, and Viator is no longer part of the old guard.
Now, he's again the head coach at McNeese State, but he's trying to lead the Cowboys back up the SLC mountain, not stay on top of it.
'This has been exciting,' Viator said Monday at the Southland Conference Media Day in the San Antonio Convention Center. 'I'm highly motivated not to relive the past but for the future.'
Viator returns to McNeese after nine seasons away from the program he built. His 78 wins are tied for the most in program history.
In his first 10 years as the Cowboy head coach, Viator won four Southland titles, made the playoffs five times, and was named the league's Coach of the Year on three occasions.
None of that matters now.
'This is a great opportunity for me,' said Viator. 'The McNeese program means a lot to me. The transition back has been good.'
The program has not made the playoffs since Viator left and went 0-11 just two years ago. Last year, the Cowboys bounced back to go 6-6, but they haven't had a winning season since 2019. Viator wants that to change.
'I want to see McNeese get back to the standard it once had,' said Viator.
The fans are excited for sure. Season ticket sales are up 70 percent from a year ago ,and the buzz is all over town.
'It is really exciting to see the fans getting involved,' said Viator. 'We have a great fanbase and want to reward them.'
Viator also wanted to reward the players who elected to stay with the program.
'I wanted to give them a chance if they wanted to stay with us,' Viator said. 'I'm glad the ones that stayed are with us.'
Viator brought two of his returning players with him to San Antonio, offensive lineman Will Bressi and defensive end Masey Lewis. Both have seen the difference with Viator's return.
'We are focused much more on the details every day at work,' said Bressi. 'We work on the small things to get better each practice.'
Lewis pointed out how much the defense has been through over the years and what this season means to them.
'We have been together and have been through a lot,' Lewis said. 'We are a close group that can go through anything now.'
This isn't a rewind for the coach. It is a start of an entirely new era.
'I still park in the same spot I did before, still take the same elevator up to my office, and see some of the same people,' said Viator. 'But a lot has changed since I was last here and I think for the better. That's what makes this exciting.'
For him and McNeese fans.

It's a good summer to be an Oklahoma State Cowboy. Ethan Fang, 20, and Preston Stout, 21, were named members of the 2025 United States Walker Cup team, it was announced Friday. The duo, both rising juniors at OSU, join Jackson Koivun, Ben James and Michael La Sasso on what will be a 10-man roster, leaving five spots open with three weeks remaining in the selection period. Scottie Scheffler, admitted Cowboys fan, would do unthinkable for Super Bowl win
The @PardonMyTake boys are firing today!! 2 points to @PFTCommenter for asking Scottie Scheffler, 'What's the conversion rate…one major for a Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl or would you give up two?' Scottie replies, 'gosh, that's good great question. Hard hitting… With great power come great resposibility, and with great responsibility comes sacrifice. In a surprising revelation that blends sports royalty with personal sacrifice, the world's top golfer and known Cowboys fan Scottie Scheffler, would trade one of his major championships for a Dallas Cowboys' Super Bowl victory. Little to no hesitation existed in his answer showing the world how deep his love for the team runs but a real conversation would have to take place if the price were to go up to two major championships. For those keeping count, Scheffler recently won the Open Championship (often referred as The British Open) pushing his count to four major wins. The 2022 and 2024 Masters Champion was born in New Jersey but his family moved to Dallas when he was six-years old citing the 9/11 attacks as one of the reasons for the relocation. He still resides in the city with his wife and son. In an interview before the 2024 NFL season with Pardon My Take, Scheffler's response to his feelings entering the year reflect similarly to many fans about the Cowboys on social media. Typically I go into every year with a ton of hope and get crushed. - Scottie Scheffler on Pardon My Take (2024) Many fans have expressed the roller coaster feeling the Cowboys season usually puts them through and although fans have endured a rash of heartbreaking endings, the beginning of the ride usually brings everyone back for more. But the first game will start and I'm gonna think 'They're gonna win every game this year.' I'm that Cowboys fan who says 'We're gonna win the Super Bowl, we're gonna go the playoffs,' and it just never even comes close to happening. - Scottie Scheffler Aspirations and expectations aside, for the world's No. 1 golfer, a Cowboys Super Bowl Victory would be just as sweet as another green jacket. NFL Analyst Utters Bold Prediction For Cowboys Star Dak Prescott
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Looking at the entire NFC East, Dak Prescott is one of the most intriguing players heading into the 2025 season. As he prepares to make a comeback, one analyst uttered a bold prediction for the Dallas Cowboys quarterback. Back in 2023, Prescott looked to be cementing himself among the league's elite quarterbacks. He put together an impressive campaign in the regular season that nearly landed him MVP honors. However, things ended up going off the rails for him in 2024 when he suffered a season-ending injury after just eight starts. Ahead of training camp, Prescott proclaimed to the media that he is back to 100%. Now that the action is underway, he's officially begun what he hopes to be a bounce-back year. When it comes to the star QB's production, he feels there's a reality where he notches over 5,000 passing yards. "Your defense isn't very good, you're going to give up a lot of points. That means you're going to have to throw the football to stay in games," Broussard said. "You should put up huge numbers. I think you might throw for well over 5,000 yards." .@Chris_Broussard delivers some strong motivation for Dak Prescott this season: 'I think you might throw for well over 5,000 yards!' — First Things First (@FTFonFS1) July 24, 2025 Based on Prescott's track record in the NFL, this bold prediction is somewhat realistic. As Broussard mentioned, the Cowboys are likely going to remain a pass-heavy team this season. While they've made some upgrades in the backfield, it's doubtful Dallas has a consistent attack on the ground. Knowing he's going to be getting up a lot of pass attempts each week, it's possible Prescott at least comes close to this mark. Especially considering the upgraded cast of talent around him. Tight end Jake Ferguson is healthy and eager to get back to the level of production from his Pro-Bowl season, and Dallas acquired wide receiver George Pickens in the offseason. Prescott has no shortage of viable targets around him, which should result in another strong season from him. Also read: NFL Insider Reveals Shocking Update on Dallas Cowboys Star Prescott has never eclipsed 5,000 yards, but he's come close on a few occasions. He nearly did it in 2019, finishing the regular season with 4,902. His second-highest mark came in 2023 with just over 4,500. If he's able to return to the caliber of player he was pre-injury, Prescott might have a chance to make Broussard's prediction a reality.
