Caitlin Clark could be sidelined again with another injury heading into All-Star weekend
NEW YORK (AP) — The Indiana Fever might be without star guard Caitlin Clark again for a bit after she injured her groin Tuesday night late in a win over the Connecticut Sun.
It will be a busy week for the league's young star if she can play. Clark and the Fever visit New York on Wednesday night in the second half of a back-to-back and Indiana hosts the All-Star Game this weekend. Clark is set to compete in a loaded 3-point contest Friday night and is captain of one of the All-Star teams.
'No update. Just felt a little something in her groin,' Fever coach Stephanie White said after an 85-77 victory over the Sun in Boston. 'We'll get it evaluated and see what happens from there.'
Clark got hurt with under a minute left when she walked downcourt holding her right groin after assisting on the Fever's final basket. As teammate Aliyah Boston tried to console her, Clark walked to the basket stanchion and banged her head against it before heading to the bench. During the timeout, she covered her head with a towel and appeared to be holding back tears.
Clark had been durable throughout college and her first season in the WNBA, never missing a game. Now she's had four different muscle injuries so far this year.
She missed the preseason opener with tightness in her quad but played the next day in an exhibition game at her alma mater, Iowa. She suffered a quad strain against New York on May 24 that kept her out for five games. Clark returned on June 14 and played in five games before suffering another injury to her left groin that kept her out for four contests and the Commissioner's Cup final.
The Fever canceled shootaround Wednesday morning in New York, a common practice when a team is playing back-to-back games.
'I think we just take it one step at a time. We'll get some food, get on the plane and start talking about New York," White said. "She's being evaluated, we'll see where we are with that, and certainly we'll have another evaluation, probably in conversation in the morning, and see where we are. But, you know, this group has played without her, we've at least got experience in that. We know that we have a tough opponent in New York, and we know it's going to be a challenge no matter what.'

NFL insider pumps up Patriots and WR Terry McLaurin trade talk
NFL insider Albert Breer doesn't expect the Washington Commanders to botch their pending contract extension with All-Pro wide receiver Terry McLaurin. However, if the situation remains unresolved and McLaurin is available, Breer believes the New England Patriots would be "very interested" in pursuing him. McLaurin is currently in the final year of his contract in Washington, and he has voiced his frustrations over the failing contract negotiations publicly. He has 77-plus receptions for over 1,000 yards in the last five straight seasons with the Commanders. Last year, he proved to be quarterback Jayden Daniels' top receiving target with 82 receptions for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns. "This is a guy who has been a team captain for a long time, exemplary character, all of that, so my anticipation is that the Commanders are going to take a swing at getting something done with him over the course of the next week just because it makes too much sense for both sides," Breer said on Arbella Early Edition. "I think the Patriots would be very interested in this. "Now, there's a price point for all of it, and what would that mean? Obviously, he's not going to come here with an unresolved contract situation, so you better be talking about a draft pick, plus a contract. He's a little older than people realize because he was a five-year college guy. He's over 30 now. Certainly, as far as what they're looking for, from a person, from a player—helping Drake Maye—this guy checks every box." McLaurin is exactly the kind of veteran playmaker the Patriots were initially looking for in free agency before signing four-time Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs. There is still some uncertainty about what they'll get out of Diggs, who is still recovering from the torn ACL injury he suffered last season. Diggs is one of the hardest-working players in the league, and he looks well ahead of schedule in his recovery. With that said, it would be a huge bonus for the team to add McLaurin, an elite player coming off a highly productive season with a young quarterback. A duo of Diggs and McLaurin would be a dramatic facelift for a Patriots offense that has ranked among the worst for the last three seasons. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.

Scottie Scheffler starts strong at British Open after eye-opening comments
PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland — Two days after the eye-opening deep riff on the meaning of life that world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler delivered in his pre-tournament press conference, he posted a 3-under-par 68 in the first round of the British Open Thursday at Portrush. When Scheffler finished his round, he was one shot off the lead thanks to birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 to get to 3-under. Advertisement After his round, Scheffler was playfully chided by a reporter about his ability to shoot under par despite his lack of hitting fairways — he hit only three of 14 for the round. 'Yeah, you're the second guy that's mentioned that to me,'' Scheffler said. 'I actually thought I drove it pretty good. I don't know what you guys are seeing. When it's raining sideways, it's actually, believe it or not, not that easy to get the ball in the fairway. Scottie Scheffler chips onto the ninth green at the British Open on July 17, 2025. AP 'Thank you guys all for pointing that out,' he went on, smiling. 'At 3-under par, I felt like I hit the ball nice off the tee and really only had one swing I wasn't too happy with on maybe the second hole. But outside of that, I felt like I hit a lot of good tee shots, hit the ball really solid, so definitely a good bit of confidence for the next couple rounds.' Advertisement Scheffler, when he completed his round, trailed only Matthew Fitzpatrick, Jacob Skov Olesen and Haotong Li, all of whom are 4-under par. About half of Scheffler's round took place while the rains poured down on Portrush. 'Wind is something that obviously makes links golf challenging, but the rain adds a whole new element to it, especially when you're hitting the tee balls,' Scheffler said. 'You get a little moisture between the club face and the ball, especially with the longer clubs and the woods, and it can be pretty challenging. Advertisement 'We played basically (holes) 7 through 13 in rain.' Scheffler, who's seeking his second major championship victory this year to go along with the PGA he won in May, was of course asked after the round about the comments he made on Tuesday about how golf — even in victory — doesn't 'fulfill'' his life and that he sometimes, even after winning majors, asks himself, 'What's the point?'' Scottie Scheffler reacts on the 18th green during the first round of the British Open on July 17, 2025. REUTERS 'I try to be as honest as I can with y'all, with the stuff that I'm willing to kind of say,' Scheffler said. 'At times, I feel like maybe I should be a little less honest. Maybe I shouldn't have said the stuff I said because now I'm going to get asked about it more. Advertisement 'But really, it's just a matter of perspective, and I've had some players come up to me and say that they feel and think the same things. If anybody has disagreed with me, they haven't said it to my face yet, so I don't know what the reaction would be. But overall, I'm just glad to be out playing golf and competing again.' Shane Lowry, who won the Open the last time it was played at Portrush, was one of Scheffler's two playing partners, along with 2021 Open winner Collin Morikawa. Lowry, as many do, marveled at Scheffler's game and demeanor. 'We had a good day out there,' Lowry said after shooting a 1-under-par 70. 'I feel like he's a nice person to be around and obviously a great player. It's unbelievable how well he manages his way around the golf course and the scores he shoots. It's just incredible what he does with the ball. Even when you look at him and it looks like he's hitting a bad shot, it doesn't go in a bad spot.'

Pogačar powers to big Pyrenees win to reclaim Tour de France yellow jersey
HAUTACAM, France (AP) — Tadej Pogačar powered to an impressive stage win on the first day in the Pyrenees to take back the Tour de France yellow jersey on Thursday. On a day when many wondered if he would suffer any ill effects from his crash the day before, Pogačar showed none and put himself in prime position for his fourth Tour victory with a break on the stage-ending climb to Hautacam. Hautacam is the resort overlooking Lourdes and Stage 12 must have felt like a pilgrimage for all the riders. Ben Healy, who wore the yellow jersey for two stages, finished well behind on a brutal day for the Irish rider. In 2022, Vingegaard dominated Pogačar at Hautacam on his way to his first Tour victory. But the Danish rider is now 3 ½ minutes behind his main rival in the general classification. __
