Man wanted for hiding cannabis-filled Easter eggs in parks
Police in the US are searching for a man accused of hiding plastic eggs filled with cannabis in parks as part of an Easter scavenger hunt.
Avante Nicholson allegedly placed five drug-laden eggs in various spots across three parks – often used by families – and behind a nearby motel in Lufkin, Texas on Easter Sunday.
He then posted a series of photos and clues on Facebook as a hint to their whereabouts.
Someone who saw the posts got in touch with police.
Officers found four of the eggs, while the fifth was found by a man and his granddaughter, who notified authorities.
In total the eggs contained more than a quarter of an ounce of marijuana, police said.
They have obtained four warrants for his arrest – three for third-degree felony delivery of marijuana in a drug-free zone and one for a state jail felony for delivery of marijuana.
Lufkin police chief David Thomas said: 'On the surface, it seems implausible that someone would give away a drug, but the follow-up proves that sometimes even the most unlikely things do happen.
'The safety of our community is at the forefront of everything we do. And in cases such as this, when it endangers children, we are even more vigilant.'
Nicholson's Facebook includes several references to selling drugs, and in the lead up to the scavenger hunt, he posted that anyone who 'shopped' with him would receive exclusive hints to the locations of the cannabis eggs.
Chief Thomas praised the person who reported the Facebook posts, and emphasised how important it was to take all tips seriously, even when they sounded far-fetched.
'Incidents like this are a reminder of why we take seriously all information called in to our offices,' he said. 'It's our job to follow up, and this case shows exactly why that matters.'
Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Lufkin Police Department directly.
Some people posting on Facebook said voiced their concerns.
'I don't care if people smoke, but I wouldn't want a child picking up those eggs, this was stupid and now he has felonies,' wrote one.
Another added: 'Just one more in an increasingly long list of people and institutions taking away the joys of our children. I think it's disgusting that a grown man would find this funny.' More Trending
Others found the scavenger hunt amusing.
One wrote: 'Looks like quality stuff. Dude had this planned for advertisement purposes. He'll be out and No.1 salesman next week,' quipped one.
Another said: 'Man dude was just playing Easter bunny.'
The eggs were hidden in Morris Frank Park, Winston Park, Grace Dunn Richardson Park, and also behind a nearby Motel 6.

Plastic surgeon who stabbed rival doctor and tried to burn down his home jailed
A plastic surgeon who broke into a fellow doctor's home and stabbed him in the middle of the night has been jailed for life. Jonathan Peter Brooks, 61, poured petrol over the floor before attacking his colleague Graeme Perks in January 2021. The burns specialist was desperate to get Perks 'out of the way' because the fellow plastic surgeon had been a witness in disciplinary hearings against him. Brooks was sentenced at Loughborough Courthouse today to life in prison, with a minimum term of 22 years, after being found guilty of attempted murder in April. Judge Justice Pepperall said the plastic surgeon, who was absent during the trial on hunger strike, had been on a 'murderous expedition' to commit 'appalling crimes'. Artyom Kodenkov, 31, revealed from hospital how he cheated death in the country's Primorsky region. With his head bandaged from wounds inflicted by the predator, the survivor told a local TV station how he ran across a bear protecting two cubs. "I was climbing a hill," he said. I heard it growling, and half a second later it was in front of me on its hind legs, as tall as me. We started to fight, rolled down the hill, flew about 10 metres [33ft], and it immediately bit me on the head. "I heard my bones crunching in its jaws." He added: "I defended myself desperately." Artyom said he thought about his wife and daughters during the encounter - and while he knew the odds were stacked against him surviving alive, he didn't give up fighting. "I thought about my children, I thought that I had to live," said Artyom. "I didn't give in to him, he wanted to rip my stomach apart. I didn't let him. With my hands and feet, I fought him off. I even unclenched his fangs with my fingers…" At some point, he said blood was gushing from him and he thought this was the end, as he no longer had power to fight back against the beast. "[In the end] I just gave up, and that's it," he said. "I thought, let him tear me, do what he wants. I had no strength to fight." Eventually, this saved him as the bear thought Artyom was dead, and just wandered off, he explained. "The bear walked away," he said. Exhausted with blood pouring from him, but unable to move, he called for help while fearing no-one would hear, or the bear might return. He said: "I was shouting 'Help!' There were some blokes in the forest. They came to my aid, dragged me to the road, and got me to the nearest village. I wasn't thinking about anything really, just about my children - that I had to stay alive." Artyom was rushed from Lenino village to Chuguyevka hospital with lacerations on his face, head, neck, legs, and thighs and broken facial bones. Later he was moved to Regional Clinical Hospital No. 2 in Vladivostok city for specialist treatment. Maxillofacial surgeons restored his face using titanium plates. Face surgeon Aleksei Romanchuk said: "We also carried out additional surgical treatment, applying all the principles of plastic and reconstructive surgery as far as possible in the case of bite wounds. I believe the patient is going to be just fine." The victim will remain in hospital for several weeks before being reunited with his family. Last year, a raging brown bear mauled a father and son to death after breaking into their home in the Primorsky region just hours after it killed 35 dogs in a shelter. Hunting inspectors were immediately ordered to track down and kill the bear after it was feared it could strike again - and hours later, they found and shot the predator. Police had cordoned off the village and stood guard to protect terrified locals. A night curfew was also imposed.
