Postecoglou 'cherishes' Celtic days and still watches games

The National2 days ago

Things haven't gone swimmingly for the Aussie since his move to Tottenham and he may well be facing the sack, so it would be easy to forgive him for pining after his trophy-laden Hoops days.
And those moments still have a special place in his heart.
So says former Hibs boss Nick Montgomery, now working as part of Postecoglou's backroom staff at Spurs.
He says the coaching team are always watching games in the background and the 59-year--old has been delighted to see Brendan Rodgers carry on his success.
'Ange loved his time at Celtic,' Montgomery claimed. 'I think he cherishes those times at Celtic, it's a massive club.

'It's used to winning and when you go in there the pressure is on that you continue that trend and you have to win.
'Probably, people doubted him but Ange managed to do that. He's always watching the Celtic games and the A-League games and the Japanese games.
'We always have them on in the coach's office. He obviously really enjoyed his time there and no doubt he's really happy for the success again this year.'
Postecoglou is under fire despite winning the Europa League after finishing a lowly 17th in the Premier League at the same time.
Montgomery insists that European success wouldn't have been possible without the manager and has backed him up.
"He's obviously been massive in this cup win,' the former Easter Road man said. 'Look, he's a great guy and I think he's a man that's full of self-belief.

What could Rangers fans expect if Martin takes charge?

Russell Martin is, according to some, on the brink of becoming the next Rangers manager. Others say a deal is still some way off. Some would have you believe other candidates are still very much in the wonder Rangers fans don't know what to believe but a section among them don't seem overly enthused by the prospect of former MK Dons, Swansea City and Southampton boss Martin taking are presumably unconvinced by his English Premier League experience last term, which led to his sacking and Southampton's eventual that view does ignore the work done in getting into England's top flight and the increasing evidence to support the idea that the transition from the Championship to the top tier is an ever-expanding bridge to what could Rangers expect on the pitch if Martin takes charge and are there parallels with former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou? What's his style of play? Martin himself told the BBC's Match of the Day last month that a key element of taking on any job would be "how the style of play will fit" and "how convinced the ownership and people in charge are with how we do things."That seems to suggest he retains faith in his coach and analyst John Walker has undertaken extensive analysis of Martin's managerial career and believes many people misunderstand his style."I think there's a misconception of it being very passive in possession for possessions sake," he told BBC Scotland."To me, anytime I've watched MK Dons, Swansea or Southampton - more the latter in the Championship - it was actually really forward attacking play. "It was very fast forward. It wasn't too dissimilar, though not the exact same in patterns, to Postecoglou's Celtic. "That's probably why I'm such a champion for him taking over Rangers because I believe it's a style of football, with aggression, that can work in Scotland."Ironically, it was in the aftermath of a 5-0 drubbing by Postecoglou's Tottenham Hotspur that Martin was sacked by Southampton. His next game in the dugout could come with Rangers. Is Martin too reliant on one approach? A reluctance to adapt is an accusation Postecoglou and Martin both share. But the latter's former Norwich City team-mate, Angus Gunn, would dispute came up against Martin's Southampton team in the English Championship en route to, what turned into, their unsuccessful return to the Premier League."They were a tough team," the Scotland goalkeeper said. "We had a couple of good games against them. One was 4-4, one was 1-1, so quite contrasting."When we first played them they were quite open. Then when we played them again, they were a little bit pragmatic and I think that shows a coach that can adapt and change the way his team plays. "Watching his teams over the few years that he was there, I thought he did that even though some people probably said that he was reluctant to change a lot. "I thought he did that quite well, especially in the Championship."The narrative around the former Scotland defender, particularly with Southampton in the Premier League, was that he was too stubborn and needed to adapt. The former Rangers defender's response was firm. "There is a difference between being stubborn and having conviction," he told BBC Sport. "If you really believe in something as a coach, manager, leader, then the logic for me is that you stick with it and try to be better at it."It suggests the principles of Martin's approach won't deviate, if he gets the Ibrox job. Squad overhaul required to suit style? It seems there will be a significant, if not seismic, change in squad personnel at Rangers, with fresh funds available after the takeover led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises. But just how big would that need to be to allow Martin to implement his ideas?Walker believes wholesale change is required at Rangers, but insists Martin would be unfazed by such a task."I don't think many of the players that are currently there will survive," Walker said. "When he went into Swansea, I think they had 18 players leave over the summer so they had to make 17 signings."When he went into Southampton there were 20 people wanting to leave. "So he's got experience of building a squad and almost instantly implementing the style of play. I would expect a massive squad overhaul if he comes in."I think with the style of play, you're going to also experience teething problems, a lot of goals conceded to start with. "I think the exciting part will be there'll be lots of goals for Rangers."

I'm only human! Celtic striker Idah hits back at critics who question his off-field conduct

CELTIC striker Adam Idah has fired back at critics who questioned his off-field conduct towards the end of last season. A video was circulated on social media back in April which appeared to show Idah looking worse for wear and vomiting in the back of a taxi. Idah, who was on a day off at the time, immediately sought to explain himself to Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers in the aftermath. Rodgers was quick to defend the Republic of Ireland striker, who was signed for £9million from Norwich City last summer. Speaking to Irish media ahead of his country's friendlies against Senegal and Luxembourg, Idah insisted he will continue to live his life as normal. 'It didn't impact me,' said the 24-year-old in response to the social media storm around the video. 'I was out on a day off, that was that. The manager understood. I was off, I went out with the boys, and that was that. 'There was no problem with the manager - he spoke about it really well. 'I will be video-taped, but at the end of the day, I am a human being. I go out. I'm not a robot where I have to stay inside all the time. 'It's hard when people are videoing you. It can be quite upsetting, especially when the story is made out to be what it is not. 'It can be tough, but like I said, I am human and I'm going to carry on with my life.' All in all, Idah had a testing season. He wasn't first-choice for a lot of the campaign, with Daizen Maeda shining in a central role. But the Irishman still scored 20 goals in 53 appearances, which was the highest total of his career thus far. Learning to deal with the pressure and demands at a club like Celtic is something which he feels will stand him in good stead moving forward. 'The pressure is a lot and you are expected to deliver,' he said. 'I think with my experience now, you have to put that behind you. You know what you are good at. 'If you don't score for a couple of games, it is not helpful to listen to an ex-player. I am not really concerned with what he thinks - I am there to do my bit. 'I had a good run in the last few games, but I know it can turn quick. That is football. 'There have been plenty of games when I have gone without scoring, you have to stay focused and help the team. 'There is a lot of pressure at the club to be successful. It is good, I think. Every player wants to play at a big club, but what comes with a big club is the pressure. 'It was a disappointing end to the season for us [losing the Scottish Cup Final], but an overall fantastic season. 'I came away with two trophies, scored 20 goals and got the winning goal in the last camp for Ireland. I feel really good. 'Most strikers will say the same thing: that you get that feeling from scoring goals, and you're hungry for more. It's great to have. 'I got into a nice little rhythm towards the end of the season, and hopefully I can come into this camp and score more.' Meanwhile, Kieran Tierney has said his farewell to Arsenal fans ahead of his impending move back to Celtic in the summer. Tierney will return to Parkhead on a free transfer once his contract with the Gunners expires. Tierney told the Arsenal website: 'Just thank you for everything from day one. The fans supported us through the good times and the bad, and they supported me through some hard times as well. 'I think that's what I'm most grateful for, the times where it wasn't so good or so easy for me is when they probably supported me most, so I'm just very grateful and I feel very lucky to have the support from them. 'I feel so lucky that I've played for this club and the love that the supporters have given me has been amazing. I've loved every day here and I've learned so much, I've improved so much and I just feel very lucky.'

Matheus Cunha will be perfect for Man Utd and Bruno Fernandes – but only if Ruben Amorim makes crucial signing

IT is safe to say that Manchester United failed to live up to their supporters' expectations. They finished in 15th place, well behind the European qualification spots, on just 42 points, and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham to leave them trophyless. 9 9 9 The club have backed new boss Ruben Amorim despite the historically bad results. That backing does appear to have extended to the transfer market as well. Brazil star Matheus Cunha is already confirmed to be on board at Old Trafford in a £62.5million arrival from Wolves. Meanwhile, club captain Bruno Fernandes has opted to stay despite a mega £700,000-a-week offer to join Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal. How exactly Cunha will be used by Man Utd still remains to be seen. He has played as a striker at points for Wolves but he is not the type to make regular runs behind the defensive line, preferring to drop deeper in order to receive and link play. That means he is arguably more effective in behind a main striker, which could create an overlap of profiles with the likes of Fernandes. Below we break down the tactical fit of Cunha at Man Utd under Amorim. Intelligent movement around the penalty area It is interesting to note that towards the end of the season we saw Wolves typically play the same tactical shape as Man Utd did under Amorim. Their 3-4-2-1 shape saw Cunha used either as a 9 or as one of the two attacking midfielders behind the main striker. In these positions Cunha's intelligence and movement in the final third and around the penalty area helped Wolves create a lot of threat. He is very strong when it comes to finding little pockets of space to drop into and attack around the opposition defensive structure. The Brazilian is also difficult to deal with defensively because when defending deep opposition players will typically be concentrating on being tight and defending the space between the ball and the goal. Cunha takes advantage of this with sharp movements to outplay defenders and create shooting opportunities. 9 We believe Cunha would be able to play in a similar kind of role to Fernandes as both are extremely intelligent in the attacking phase of the game. This would mean, however, that Man Utd would still need to add a new forward to play ahead of him, assuming they decide Rasmus Hojlund is not the long term solution. This could be an issue solved in the near future with the signing of Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. The type of runs Mbeumo makes would be perfect to stretch the length of the pitch and offer passing options or decoys for Cunha to benefit from. Indeed, the runs Mbeumo makes are extremely close to those of Mohamed Salah at Liverpool and could benefit both Cunha and Fernandes greatly. With Fernandes being more comfortable as a passer and creator from deeper areas, we should see Cunha acting as the link between the Portugal star and the forward. 9 Given Fernandes is well known as one of the most aggressive and creative passers in the league he will enjoy having a player like Cunha alongside him to find space in tight areas. While Cunha is not an out and out striker, his movement and intelligence of positioning around the area will create real threat. Not just a finisher Cunha impressed in front of goal last season as he finished with 15 league goals, while he was also able to provide a creative threat for his team But Cunha has long been seen as more of a creative attacker than a true goalscorer, such as when he was at Hertha Berlin or Atletico Madrid. The same is true in deeper positions, especially in transition, when Cunha was capable of getting on the ball and play the final line breaking ball to release team-mates. He was extremely versatile with his positioning as he occupied pockets across the width of the penalty area. 9 In terms of his on pitch relationship with Fernandes, it will be interesting to see how Cunha interacts with him given their respective preferred creative operating areas. The 30-year-old is less of a runner and more of a passer which could create disconnects with Cunha due to a lack of vertical runners around him. With that said, the two should be able to connect deeper with Cunha being the player to make the more aggressive vertical run off the back of that connection. The issue Man Utd may have is they will essentially have two advanced midfielders without an effective focal point striker to play off of and make the ball stick. 9 It is all very well for Amorim to add creativity and dangerous passing to their attacking unit. But they need to ensure that they have the players ahead of the ball that can make the runs to take advantage of those passes. Decision making and intelligence Cunha is a player who can become decisive for the Red Devils both in scoring goals and creating chances, and that is down to his supreme intelligence and strong decision making. This is what makes him such a versatile attacker, and it would therefore be somewhat wasteful to play him as the main striker. He is far better when allowed to play deeper and underneath a more physical and aggressive striker. 9 Essentially, Man Utd should be looking to use a striker who can threaten space behind the defensive line. This should force the opposition defensive line deeper and then we would see Cunha, and Bruno, with more space that they could play in underneath the striker. The ability of a player to consistently make correct choices in terms of the timing and direction of his runs is something that is hugely underlooked. 9 Especially given the pace of the modern game and the intensity of the Premier League. The fact, Cunha always seems to give team-mates what they need at the right time will be hugely beneficial to Man Utd in terms of helping them to unlock opposition teams. Conclusion In our opinion signing a player like Cunha off the back of a terrible season will be a real boost for the Red Devils and their fans. What is critical though, is Cunha is then surrounded with more signings in key areas to give him the support to make the most of his attacking and creative abilities. Given Man Utd are already looking to add Mbeumo to their ranks, it would suggest an awareness they need to add more options in the attacking third. It will still be a long summer ahead for Man Utd's recruitment team.
