USA Today12 hours ago
The Texas Rangers (62-64) face the Kansas City Royals (64-61) in the second game of a 4-game set Tuesday. First pitch from Kauffman Stadium in K.C. is set for 7:40 p.m. ET. Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's MLB odds around the Rangers vs. Royals odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.
Season series: Royals lead 4-0
The Rangers lost 4-3 in K.C. Monday as they just couldn't get the big hit. OF Wyatt Langford went 2-for-4, and SS Corey Seager went 3-for-4 in the 2-3 holes, and they couldn't get the supplemental offense needed. The Rangers have lost 5 of 6 and are 2-8 over the last 10. They're now 6 games out of a Wild Card spot.
The Royals have won 6 of 7 and are 7-3 in their last 10 to pull within 3½ of a Wild Card spot. 1B Vinnie Pasquantino hit his 23rd homer of the season Monday. SS Bobby Witt Jr. is 8-for-18 (.444) over the last 7 days.
Rangers at Royals projected starters
RHP Merrill Kelly vs. RHP Seth Lugo
Kelly (9-7, 3.36 ERA) makes his 26th start. He has a 1.09 WHIP, 2.7 BB/9 and 8.5 K/9 over 144 2/3 innings with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Rangers
Lugo (8-6, 3.77 ERA) makes his 24th start. He has a 1.24 WHIP, 3.2 BB/9 and 7.5 K/9 through 131 1/3 innings.

Rangers at Royals picks and predictions
Rangers 3, Royals 2
Moneyline
The Royals are 4-0 against the Rangers this year, and that's an anomaly that is about to change. This series is likely to define the Rangers' season, and Kelly just lost to his former teammates. He'll have extra motivation to put up some zeros.
Give me the RANGERS (-105).
Run line/Against the spread
Kelly has allowed more than 2 ER in 1 of his last 7 GS. Give me MERRILL KELLY UNDER 2.5 EARNED RUNS (-118) at a solid price.
Over/Under
It's slated to be 91 degrees with a 7-mph breeze blowing in from left-center. I was already feeling the Under before that revelation. The Under is 7-2-1 in the last 10 meetings.
Give me the UNDER 8.5 (+100).

Gurriel and McCarthy lead Diamondbacks to 6-5 win over Guardians

PHOENIX (AP) — Lourdes Gurriel Jr. drove in three runs, Jake McCarthy hit a solo homer and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Cleveland Guardians 6-5 on Tuesday night. McCarthy finished with two hits and Corbin Carroll tripled twice, his fourth game this season with two triples. Diamondbacks starter Eduardo Rodriguez gave up four runs on five hits and three walks in 6 2/3 innings. Juan Burgos (1-0) got one out to earn his first major league win. The 25-year-old rookie entered with two outs and a runner on first in the seventh, gave up a double to Angel Martínez and intentionally walked José Ramírez before pinch-hitter Kyle Manzardo grounded out to end the inning. Andrew Saalfrank pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save. McCarthy's homer opened the scoring in the third. Carroll tripled and scored on a groundout by Gurriel in the fourth. Carlos Santana singled to drive in José Ramírez and then scored on a single by Nolan Jones in the Cleveland fourth. Ramírez hit a two-run homer in the fifth. Tim Herrin (4-3) gave up two runs in two-thirds of an inning to take the loss. Key moment Geraldo Perdomo hit a one-out single and stole second base before Ketel Marte was intentionally walked in the seventh. Carroll reached and Perdomo moved to third on a forceout, and Nic Enright replaced Herrin. Carroll stole second and Gurriel singled to make it 6-4. Key stat Carroll leads MLB with a career-high 16 triples and is the first player with at least 16 in one season since José Reyes and Shane Victorino both had 16 in 2011. Up next Arizona's Brandon Pfaadt (12-8, 5.08 ERA) is scheduled to pitch Wednesday in the finale of a three-game series. The Guardians had not announced their starter. ___ AP MLB:

San Diego snaps losing streak with strong performance from Nick Pivetta

Nick Pivetta allowed a leadoff home run to Jung Hoo Lee that saw the San Francisco Giants jump out to a 1-0 lead over the San Diego Padres after two pitches. That was the only run he or any other Padres pitcher allowed as San Diego earned a 5-1 win at Petco Park, Tuesday. Pivetta did what the Friar Faithful have come to expect from his starts, working deep into the game, limiting hits and allowing minimal runs. Pivetta completed six innings and gave up the lone run on three hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts. His performance helped the Padres snap a four-game skid. The San Diego offense wasted no time in responding to the leadoff home run and plated a run in the bottom of the first to tie the game. Fernando Tatis Jr. reached on an error to start the bottom half of the inning and moved to third on a double by Luis Arraez. Manny Machado brought Tatis Jr. home with an RBI-groundout, which was just Machado's second RBI in August. The Padres took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ryan O'Hearn singled to open the frame. Xander Bogaerts was hit by a pitch and Ramon Laureano grounded into a fielder's choice. With one out, Gavin Sheets was also hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jose Iglesias broke a 1-1 tie with a line drive single into left field that gave San Diego a 2-1 lead. The Padres tacked on a second run in the inning when Tatis Jr. worked a two-out walk to push the lead to 3-1. O'Hearn impacted the San Diego offense in the bottom of the fifth after Machado doubled to center field to start the inning. O'Hearn followed with a hard-hit single to right-center field that allowed Machado to score from second to give the Padres a 4-1 lead. San Diego scored its final run of the game when Arraez grounded into a fielder's choice in the bottom of the sixth with runners on the corners. Tatis Jr. was forced out at second base, but Elias Diaz scored from third base to give the Padres a 5-1 lead. The San Diego offense was led by Machado and O'Hearn, who each recorded two hits, scored a run and had an RBI. Five other Padres recorded a hit in the game. The San Diego bullpen arms of Adrian Morejon, Jason Adam and Robert Suarez worked the final three innings of the game and combined to allow just one hit and recorded two strikeouts. The Padres play the Giants, Wednesday at 6:40 p.m.

Yankees bash 9 home runs vs. Rays, tying franchise record from start of the season

The New York Yankees have had their issues this season, but power isn't one of them. With nine homers in a 13-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday, New York tied a franchise record set earlier this year. They also finished just one long ball shy of the MLB record of 10, held by the 1987 Toronto Blue Jays. There have been only four times in MLB history in which a team has hit at least nine homers in a game. The 2025 Yankees have half of them. Like in their first nine-homer game, the Yankees got started with three consecutive homers in the first inning. Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton all took Rays starter Shane Baz deep, with Judge recording his 40th homer of the season. The Yankees got that hot start after a two-hour rain delay at their leased-out home away from home at Steinbrenner Field. Bellinger and Stanton both went on to add another homer later in the game. Jazz Chisholm Jr., Ben Rice and Jose Caballero all chipped in as well, with Caballero hitting a second in the ninth to make history. Across MLB history, there has been only once instance of a team hitting 10 homers in a game, three in which a team hit nine and 23 in which they hit eight. Funnily enough, as Sarah Langs notes, Yankees manager Aaron Boone was involved in all three of those nine-homer games. He managed the Yankees' two this year and hit the first homer in the third game for the Cincinnati Reds in 1999. The Yankees had that other nine-homer game in their second game of the season, which you may recall because a) poor Nestor Cortes allowed homers on his first three pitches against his old team and b) that's when the world first started to learn about New York's torpedo bats. The craze around the torpedo bats quickly faded after the first couple weeks of the season, but they've still helped the Yankees enough that they lead MLB in homers by a healthy margin, with 204 to the second-place Dodgers 187. The vibes for the Yankees are a bit worse with this power surge, as they remain five games back from the Toronto Blue Jays for first place in an AL East division they were once strongly favored to win. The Blue Jays won 7-3 against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday to maintain their lead. There have been signs the Yankees are turning things around after a brutal month and a half, though, with wins in five of their past six games. They can't redistribute some of Tuesday's homers to other games, but they're certainly a good omen the team is back on the right track.
