Serie A may be suspended for Pope's funeral
Saturday's Serie A fixtures may be suspended along with other sports events in Italy because of the funeral for Pope Francis in Rome.
Giovanni Malago, president of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) has asked for this measure to be taken after the government declared five days of national mourning.
Malago also asked for a minute of silence to be observed before all sports events during the week.
The three Serie A matches scheduled for Saturday have reportedly already been postponed: Inter Milan v Roma, Lazio v Parma and Como v Genoa.
The league is yet to confirm the postponement.
The Women's Six Nations rugby union match between Italy and wales in Parma on Saturday will also be affected.
Dignitaries and visitors from around the world are expected to be in Rome for the funeral of the pope who died on Monday morning following a stroke and heart failure, according to the Vatican.
They are to include United States president Donald Trump, in what will be his first trip abroad since starting his second term in January.
Monday's four Serie A Games were postponed and have been rearranged for Wednesday.
In Argentina the late Pope is being honoured at his local hometown soccer club in Buenos Aires, San Lorenzo de Almagro, where the football-loving head of the Roman Catholic Church remained a member during his 12-year papacy.
Fans from the first-tier Primera División club started gathering from Monday at the club's chapel to the south-west of the Argentine capital to bid farewell to their best-known member.
Special commemorative jerseys will be worn for Saturday's match against Rosario Central, club president Marcelo Moretti said.

Inter line up former player Chivu to replace Inzaghi
Beaten Champions League finalists Inter Milan will appoint their former player and youth coach Cristian Chivu as manager to replace the recently departed Simone Inzaghi. Inter president Giuseppe Marotta said on Friday that the deal would be announced once details have been worked out with Parma, Chivu's current club. Inzaghi left Inter on Tuesday, four years to the day since his appointment and three days after his side suffered a 5-0 defeat by Paris St-Germain in the Champions League final to end the season trophyless. He was named coach of Al-Hilal a day later. Italian media reports had already named Chivu as the new manager with the 44-year-old Romanian set to sign a two-year contract, and Marotta, speaking at the Serie A Festival, all but confirmed the news. "To win, money alone is not enough, expertise, planning, experience, and many other qualities are needed," Marotta said. "All these qualities are what we believe to have, for example in the case of Chivu. I'm saying this because I cannot give official confirmation as there is a bureaucratic aspect we need to overcome with Parma." Meanwhile Gian Piero Gasperini has been named as Roma's new coach, taking over for the retiring Claudio Ranieri following his successful run at Atalanta. "I need a significant challenge," Gasperini said in an interview released by Roma. He has signed a three-year deal for the club owned by Texas-based businessman Dan Friedkin. In nine seasons at Atalanta, Gasperini guided the Bergamo club to a Europa League triumph in 2024, six top-four finishes in Serie A, and a Champions League quarter-final.
