Punjab CM draws flak for ‘one nation, one husband' remark post Operation Sindoor
Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday hit out at the BJP, accusing the saffron party of politicising Operation Sindoor for electoral gains.
The BJP was quick to get back at him and demanded he apologise and resign for making light of the military operation launched on May 7 to avenge the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which the husbands of Hindu women tourists, identified by their sindoor, were targeted.
Replying to a question about the BJP campaign for the June 19 Ludhiana West assembly byelection, Mann accused the party of making a mockery of Indian traditions and seeking votes in the name of Operation Sindoor for the bypoll in Ludhiana West assembly constituency.
Alluding to reports that BJP workers are distributing sindoor (vermillion) to households following the success of Operation Sindoor, Mann remarked: 'Will you wear sindoor in (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi's name? Is this One Nation, One Husband?'
They (BJP) are sending sindoor to every household, will you apply that,' he asked the reporter.
The BJP denied any such drive to win over voters and its leaders, including the party's state unit's spokesperson Pritpal Singh Balliawal, termed the CM's remarks 'shameful'.
BJP candidate Jiwan Gupta is contesting against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) nominee and MP Sanjeev Arora, Congress's Bharat Bhushan Ashu and Shiromani Akali Dal leader Parupkar Singh Ghumman for the Ludhiana West assembly seat. Describing Mann's remarks as 'vulgarity dressed as leadership', the BJP demanded Mann's resignation.
'He didn't insult the BJP. He insulted every widow of a soldier, every mother of a martyr, every woman of Bharat. And now a question to (AAP national convener) Arvind Kejriwal: Do you support your CM mocking sindoor, a sacred symbol worn by your own wife? Or will you stay silent just to protect your politics? Mann must resign and apologise to the nation,' the party posted on X, adding 'He can't grasp the meaning of sindoor — a symbol of love, sacrifice, and strength for every Indian woman.'
Union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu also slammed the remarks terming it a 'cheap political commentary' on a sensitive national security issue and demanded an unconditional apology from Mann for his 'crass' remarks.
'I never expected that Bhagwant Mann would stoop so low by mocking the widows of Pahalgam. You may be a former comedian, but that doesn't give you the right to mock the widows of martyrs or the valour of our armed forces,' Bittu said in Ludhiana.
Bittu also accused Congress of politicising the army's brave actions and undermining the sacrifices of soldiers and their families.
Taking a jibe at Punjab Congress state chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Bittu said that he has joined the AAP in questioning the legitimacy of the army's actions. 'Warring asked for proof of the operation's success by suggesting that the army should display the remains of Pakistani fighter jets. This shows a deep mistrust in our own armed forces and is a disgrace to the nation,' Bittu said.
He alleged that Congress has long taken a soft stance on Pakistan and its sympathisers. 'Questioning the army only emboldens our enemies. Warring's comments are not just shameful, they are deeply damaging,' Bittu said
Mann must apologise: Cong's Ashu
Congress' Ludhiana West bypoll candidate and former minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu slammed Mann for making fun of 'sindoor'.
'It has become a fashion to make fun of and mock the Hindu customs and rituals and CM Mann proved to be no exception', Ashu said.
The senior Congress leader said such insulting remarks about Hindu practices are unacceptable and the CM must tender an unconditional apology.
Under Operation Sindoor, the Indian armed forces carried out pre-dawn missile strikes on May 7 on nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, including the Jaish-e-Mohammad stronghold of Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba's base in Muridke, in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives.

Contribute now New Delhi: In an unexpected twist ahead of his trial later this year, jailed Indian businessman Nikhil Gupta submitted a signed letter to a federal New York judge seeking dismissal of his indictment, only for his lawyer to inform the court that the filing had been made 'inadvertently.' Gupta, who is accused of plotting to hire a hitman on behalf of a former Indian intelligence officer to assassinate US citizen and Khalistani separatist lawyer Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, is scheduled to go on trial in November, with pre-trial proceedings set to begin later this month. He has been in US federal custody since June 2024, following his arrest at Prague airport and subsequent extradition from the Czech Republic. The former Research and Analysis Wing officer Vikas Yadav is also charged in the indictment, but his whereabouts in India are still unknown. On May 29, the court formally received Gupta's seven-page letter, in which he asked the judge to throw out the charges against him and release him immediately on bail. The move raised eyebrows, as Gupta submitted the motion himself despite being represented by court-appointed attorneys. In his letter, emailed to the court, Gupta argued that the indictment was legally flawed because it did not cite a specific state or federal law that would have been broken had the alleged murder-for-hire plot been carried out. He also contended that his extradition from the Czech Republic was invalid because it was based on what he called a 'defective' indictment. The next day, Judge Victor Marrero of the Southern District of New York asked defence counsel whether they were aware of the pro se motion and whether Gupta truly intended to proceed with it. The judge noted that not only was Gupta already represented by two lawyers, who were appointed by the court, but that they had already decided on a pre-trial motion schedule. 'Defense Counsel is directed to confirm whether they are aware of Defendant's filing and whether it is Defendant's wish to proceed with the Pro Se Motion,' said Judge Marreo in his order dated May 30. Incidentally, Gupta is now on his third set of defence lawyers since arriving in the United States. His first lawyer withdrew in October last year, citing non-payment and 'irreconcilable differences' with client. The next set, appointed by the court at Gupta's request, remained on the case for about five months. His current lawyers, also court-appointed, have been representing him since April. In response to the judge's order, Matthew LaRoche and Nola B. Heller submitted a letter on May 30 itself, stating they had spoken with Gupta and that he had confirmed he was 'very satisfied with our representation' and did not wish to move forward with the self-filed motion. As for the filing, the lawyers said Gupta had 'inadvertently filed it.' However, the prosecution recommended, as per the letter, that the judge confirm Gupta's position in open court at the next pretrial conference. They said the judge should ask Gupta directly if he was satisfied with his lawyers and whether he still wished to withdraw the motion. The defence disagreed, saying Gupta's position had already been clearly conveyed. When contacted by The Wire, Matthew LaRoche declined to comment. Speaking to The Wire, former assistant US attorney and a partner at New York law firm Katten Muchin Rosenman, Jacques Semmelman, said that that the argument 'in Mr Gupta's letter to the court, that a defective indictment makes the extradition invalid and requires his release, is entirely incorrect' 'There is no remedy in the US legal system that provides what he's asking for. I am not agreeing that his indictment is defective as he claims, but even if it were defective, that would not invalidate the extradition. Once he is here, the US court does not inquire how he arrived,' he said. Semmelmans also noted that Nikhil Gupta has an 'extremely well-regarded defense attorney, Mr. LaRoche'. 'He's a top criminal defense attorney at a very prominent law firm, Milbank. Mr Gupta has top-notch representation,' he added. A week after the court acknowledged the letter, the federal judge on June 6 accepted the defence's request to withdraw Gupta's motion to dismiss all charges. 'Match-fixing will come to Bihar next': Rahul Gandhi attacks BJP over Maharashtra polls; alleges 'rigging'
NEW DELHI: Leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Saturday again accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of engaging in "poll rigging". Citing last year's Maharashtra polls, he cautioned against similar "match-fixing" activities by the saffron party in the upcoming Bihar polls. The opposition parties have consistently raised the allegations of poll rigging in Maharashtra polls, with leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge even calling for a going back to ballot paper system terming electronic voting machines (EVMs) as "fraud" and something that put the opposition at "disadvantage". The Election Commission, has however, rejected Rahul's charge of unexpected voter's spike in the Maharashtra polls calling it "nothing unusual". "During the assembly elections in Maharashtra 6,40,87,588 electors, who reached the polling station from 7 am to 6 pm, voted. About 58 lakh votes were polled per hour, on an average.
