VSP: Worker killed on I-81 shoulder after dump truck reverses over him
WASHINGTON COUNTY, Va. (WJHL) — A worker died after being run over by a dump truck on the shoulder of Interstate 81 in Washington County, Virginia.
According to the Virginia State Police (VSP), the crash occurred on Monday around 2:30 p.m. on the shoulder of I-81 North at mile marker 30.

VSP reports a 2010 Freightliner M2 dump truck started to reverse while on the right shoulder of the interstate. The dump truck ran over a pedestrian who was also on the shoulder, according to state police.
The driver of the dump truck and the pedestrian were working on the same crew, conducting shoulder maintenance.
VSP identified the pedestrian as James Nunley, Jr., 43, of Marion.
Nunley died at the scene.
The driver was not injured, state police reported.
As of Tuesday, the crash remains under investigation.

Man taken into custody following wrong-way pursuit on I-264 in Virginia Beach
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — An unidentified man has been taken into custody following a pursuit with Virginia State Police Sunday night. According to state police, troopers attempted to stop a dark blue Cadillac at 9 p.m. in the westbound lanes of Interstate 264 for reckless driving. The driver refused to stop, causing a traffic pursuit to begin. During the pursuit, the Cadillac exited the interstate at Birdneck Road and entered the city of Virginia Beach, where the driver traveled into the opposite travel lanes against the flow of traffic. The driver continued traveling in the wrong direction until troopers struck the vehicle at the off ramp of I-264 east, disabling the vehicle. Police said the driver barricaded himself in the vehicle and refused to exit. Virginia Beach Police, K-9 and tactical units assisted with the barricade. Shortly after, the unknown male driver was taken into custody without incident. Both east and west lanes were shut down on I-264 while police investigated. Traffic was detoured to Laskin Road. All lanes have since reopened. The driver had no positive identification and refused to identify himself. Tractor-trailer crash on I-81 in Augusta County snarls traffic, three injured
All northbound lanes of Interstate 81 were closed beginning at mile maker 227 following a fiery tractor-trailer crash in Augusta County. Virginia State Police said the crash took place at about 4:35 p.m. on June 7. Police said the crash involved a vehicle and a tractor-trailer, and said a portion of the tractor-trailer went "in the water and the other portion caught fire on the interstate northbound at the 228-mile marker." The driver of the tractor-trailer suffered injuries that were considered life-threatening, police said. A good Samaritan that jumped into the Middle River to assist the driver was also injured. The driver of the vehicle that was in the crash with the tractor-trailer was injured as well, Virginia State Police reported. The Virginia Department of Transportation said all northbound lanes of I-81 were closed following the crash at mile marker 227.9 near Verona in Augusta County. Hours after the crash, VDOT reported that traffic backups in the northbound lanes were approximately three miles. Traffic backups on I-81 south were approximately one mile. Traffic was being detoured at Exit 227 northbound, and the northbound 227 on-ramp was closed. According to the Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department, the following agencies responded to the scene: Augusta County Fire-Rescue, Verona Volunteer Fire Company, Weyers Cave Volunteer Fire Company, Bridgewater Rescue Squad, Grottoes Rescue Squad, Staunton-Augusta Rescue Squad, and PHI Medical Shenandoah Valley - AirCare 5. OAKLAND, Calif., June 6, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Good afternoon, beloved community. We gather here today not merely in mourning, but in righteous indignation. We gather in remembrance—but also in resistance. Because a son of Oakland, a son of this nation, a brilliant Black man named Dr. Marvin Boomer, Jr., has been stolen from us. Now I stand here today not only as an attorney, but as a sister in the struggle. I speak not only as a legal representative, but as a mother, a daughter, a woman who has seen too many families crushed under the weight of injustice. I speak with a heavy heart and a righteous fire, because Marvin Boomer, Jr. should be alive today. He was not caught in a storm of his own making. He was not a suspect. He was not a statistic. He was a scholar, a teacher, a lover of justice, a defender of Black dignity. He was walking with his partner, Nina, when he saw death coming and put her safety before his own. He died a hero. And we will not allow that heroism to be silenced by bureaucratic excuses or policy failures cloaked in blue.
