ILLIT drags BTS, Jennie, and aespa to refute Min Hee Jin's accusations of copying NewJeans

ILLIT, managed by BELIFT LAB (also under HYBE), is a 5th-gen girl group with Yunah, Minju, Moka, Wonhee, and Iroha. The band was formed through the survival show R U Next? and officially debuted earlier this year. During the third court hearing, Min Hee Jin, the former creative force behind NewJeans, told the judge, 'From the styling to the lighting, props, set design, gaze direction of the members, and even the way the photos were framed, ILLIT's hanbok photoshoot looks just like NewJeans'' (via KBIZoom). She also pointed out how the group copied debut strategy, citing NewJeans' first appearance at a Chanel event, and how ILLIT rolled out at a high-profile fashion show soon after. Her legal team claimed even the makeup, hair, and outfits felt lifted, pointing to fans' reactions online, with comments like 'Isn't this NewJeans?' and 'I thought I was looking at a NewJeans update.' Min even flagged choreography, saying ILLIT borrowed sequences from NewJeans' tracks like Attention and Ditto.

BELIFT Lab fought back the accusations, telling the court that ILLIT's concept is nothing like NewJeans'. They argued that NewJeans leans into a retro Y2K aesthetic with no fixed storyline, while ILLIT follows a 'fantasy princess meets magical girl' theme with its own narrative and world-building. They also pointed out that ILLIT debuted through the reality show R U Next?, where fans saw the journey from day one. In contrast, NewJeans went for a surprise drop, no teasers, no names, just a music video out of the blue, which they called a completely different market strategy.
On the hanbok controversy, the agency pushed back hard, saying plenty of K-pop idols have done hanbok shoots in palace backdrops and Min didn't invent the look. 'This claim is baseless and ignores the genre's visual traditions,' they said. As for the choreography, BELIFT Lab argued that moves like hair whips, arm rolls, and sitting poses are standard across K-pop. They cited acts like BTS, Jennie, aespa, G-Dragon, IVE, and ITZY. Letting one group claim ownership over these moves, they warned, would kill creativity and crush fair competition in the industry.
While the two seemingly innocent bands are being dragged into the mess, what's really baffling fans is that they've got nothing to do with it. Meanwhile, HYBE chairman Bang Si-hyuk is now under the scanner, with Korea's financial watchdogs investigating him for allegedly raking in illegal profits during HYBE's 2020 IPO. He skipped out on speaking at a recent hearing, and now it's all going to the prosecutors.

'Is home a memory, an emotion, or just four walls?' The quandary returned to trouble Shekhar Kapur during the COVID pandemic when the world was shutting down. The celebrated filmmaker, who describes himself as a nomad and is fondly addressed as Ibn Batuta by his close friend Shabana Azmi, found refuge in the Jones Estate of Bhimtal, which he discovered during the recce for Masoom in the early 1980s. At the serene retreat, his 'constant search for identity' began to take shape as a spiritual sequel over the next three months. A product of Partition, Kapur says the concept of home has haunted him forever. 'My parents were refugees from Lahore. When they came to Delhi, my mother wanted her own space. She would forever say 'mainu ghar chahida hai', and my doctor father would remind her that they had just lost their home.' Kapur remembers when construction started in Maharani Bagh; his mother, who had seen two massive earthquakes in her lifetime, would tell the young architect to make it earthquake-proof. 'We were perhaps the first in Delhi to have a house built on stilts. Now that my parents are gone, my sister lives there, and I wander from one city to another. The kind of calls I get, it seems the home has been reduced to a piece of real estate. I would joke that an earthquake will not shake the house, but the tremors in real estate prices just might. All this spurred me to write. After all, we are a country of migrants.' The pangs of Partition, Kapur clarifies, didn't make him bitter but rendered him forever restless. At 24, Kapur says he decided that he would not have a career. 'If the idea of a film comes in front of me, I go to the sets; if a musical excites my imagination, I take the stage. Right now, I am as excited about working on a Korean musical on the life of Beethoven with K-pop stars as working with Naseeruddin Shah and Manoj Bajpayee on Masoom-2.' Bestowed with Padma Bhushan this year, Kapur was in Delhi to hold meetings for the International Film Festival of India in his capacity as festival director. As someone who has witnessed his uncle, Dev Anand, take on Indira Gandhi during the Emergency, Kapur is in a position to reflect on the intermingling of cinema and politics. 'I was around when he forged the National Party. He was a brave man, but I have had my own philosophy. I am not a political animal, but I do feel that if you are living in a democracy, you have to engage with the democratically elected government.' Kapur says there are issues, but democracy is an open door. 'Let's keep talking. I tell my friends who complain about censorship that I had to argue for a year to get Bandit Queen released during the Congress rule. I was also showing an Indian reality. For a long time, the U.S. has been seen as a free society, but today I guess I can express myself better in India than in the U.S.' Kapur finds a kind of intellectual tribalism in the upper echelons of society. 'No one section of society can claim that it understands or represents India completely. Freedom of expression can't exist in a vacuum. It needs to be accompanied by freedom from hunger, freedom to educate, and freedom from poverty.' Creative expression is facing a big challenge from artificial intelligence. Kapur says AI is a democratic technology, but it can't make you a better storyteller. 'If we are predictable in our creativity, AI will catch up. For instance, if we want every Game of Thrones season to have similar character graphs and ambience, AI can do that job. People at the top will lose their jobs as AI will cause the pyramid to collapse. However, the highest form of creativity emerges when we put ourselves in a state of chaos. Life and love exist because there is uncertainty. We can explore the uncertainty between does she love me, does she not in myriad ways by putting ourselves on the line, a machine can't.' Discussing his struggles with content and form, Kapur notes that among his three illustrious maternal uncles, he was emotionally closest to Chetan Anand, known for directing classics like Neecha Nagar, the only Indian film to win the Palme d'Or at Cannes, whose basic theme echoes in Kapur's jinxed project, Paani. 'Like him, content comes before style for me. You might say Mr India was an exception, but there again, the style was derived from a strong emotion. I saw the space through the 11-year-old in me. And I followed the same process in Elizabeth.' He firmly faced the detractors who equated his restlessness with laziness. Kapur says he seeks 'to climb a new mountain every time,' and sometimes, when he discovers that he is charting the same path, he is open to cutting short the adventure, as he did with projects like Joshilay and Barsaat. 'I believe art is an intuitive idea, and you can't interfere with your intuition. If you don't have your own intuition, what do you have?' he wonders. What about Kapur's perception of love? A nomad at 79 sounds a bit crazy. 'To me, settling down is a very middle-class idea,' he chuckles. 'For me, love is about dissolving yourself into something. I have felt the strongest bond with my daughter Kaveri. But is the search for home liberating or provoking more and more quests? Elizabeth poses the same question towards he end. NewJeans Might Return To ADOR If This One Demand Is Met
NewJeans' feud with ADOR began after an internal audit was conducted against Min Hee Jin by HYBE back in April last year. Following months of a feud and a lawsuit, NewJeans, also known as NJZ, has shared that they are open to returning to their former agency, ADOR, only on one condition. This unexpected turn occurred during the third hearing of ADOR's case, which sought to validate their contract with the girl group, on Thursday, July 24, at the Seoul Central District Court's Civil Agreement Division 41. At the hearing, the legal representative of NewJeans, comprising Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein, hinted that they might return to the agency only if ADOR is restored to how it was before April 2024. 'It's not that the members absolutely refuse to return," said the lawyer, as quoted by Allkpop. 'If ADOR were restored to the state it was when the members first trusted it, they would return even without being asked," NewJeans' side added. Their representative further highlighted that the agency is now under the control of HYBE, the South Korean entertainment giant behind groups like BTS and TXT. 'The current ADOR is like a phone with its SIM card replaced, completely different, and now under HYBE's control. So, they cannot go back," the group's side shared, emphasising their willingness to return only if ADOR's former CEO, Min Hee Jin, is reinstated. Their representative further added, 'The current ADOR is filled with HYBE executives following Min Hee Jin's dismissal. The ADOR that the members trusted and signed with no longer exists. Today's ADOR is not the same ADOR that wholeheartedly supported the members when the contracts were signed." ADOR's Reaction To NewJeans' Condition During the same hearing, the agency argued that the reason behind NewJeans' termination of their exclusive contracts keeps 'changing". ADOR said, 'The individual reasons for termination raised by the defendants are unjustified. We will submit detailed explanations in writing before the next hearing." All About The Dispute Between ADOR And NewJeans The primary reason behind the conflict between ADOR and NewJeans stems from an internal audit conducted by HYBE in April 2024 against Min Hee Jin. The audit accused the former CEO of trying to take over ADOR and alleged that she tried to 'steal" NewJeans. 'Although there were claims of a hostile takeover and allegations of 'attempt to steal NewJeans,' none of these were listed as a reason for Min Hee Jin's dismissal at the time," said NewJeans' side. Sharing that the group suffered the most in the fight between Min Hee Jin and HYBE, their lawyer added, 'Just ten days ago, in a separate case filed by HYBE, police concluded after a thorough investigation that Min Hee Jin's actions were part of her duties as ADOR's CEO and did not constitute a breach of trust. The case was dropped without indictment." A closed-door mediation session regarding the case is scheduled for August 14.
