FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. - Authorities are working to confirm whether a body recovered from a pond in Tysons Corner is that of 19-year-old Kyle Coleman, who went missing early Saturday after a reported crash.
What we know
Coleman, a Morehouse College student, was out with friends in the Tysons area on Friday night. At 11:20 p.m., his iPhone sent an automatic crash detection alert to 911, indicating his car had hit a tree. The dispatcher reported hearing screaming in the background. When first responders arrived, the vehicle was empty.
For three days, Fairfax County deployed detectives, officers, helicopters, drones, forensic teams, K-9 units, and search and rescue teams to locate Coleman.
SKYFOX aerial footage showed the Fairfax County Police Dive Team searching the area near Westpark Drive and Galleria Drive, where the body was recovered.

In Prince William County, community members gathered at Battlefield High School, where Coleman graduated last year. They lit candles, shared memories, and prayed.

Missing college student found dead in retention pond after crash, Virginia cops say
A college student was found dead in a retention pond three days after he was reported missing following a car crash, police said. Authorities confirmed the identity of a body found June 10 in a retention pond to be 19-year-old Kyle Coleman, the Fairfax County Police Department said in a June 11 news release. Detectives on June 9 linked Coleman — a rising sophomore at Morehouse College in Georgia, according to a Facebook post by the school — to a June 6 car crash after he was reported missing the next day, police said. Officers responded to the crash at about 11:15 p.m. in Tysons after receiving an emergency activation call from an iPhone, police said. A blue Toyota Yaris that was headed west crossed into eastbound lanes, then went off the road and hit a tree, according to police, who said they found the crashed vehicle empty. Witnesses told officers they saw a person leave the vehicle after the crash, but occupants of the car or evidence of foul play was not found during an initial search of the area, police said. Coleman's body was found days later 'submerged in a nearby retention pond surrounded by thick brush,' according to police. Detectives are investigating the circumstances of Coleman's death, police said. Tysons is about a 15-mile drive west from Washington, D.C. Community mourns 'college kid full of promise' LeLe Jones, who said Coleman was her son's best friend and came over on the weekends for pancakes, remembered him as 'a college kid full of promise' in a June 11 Facebook post. 'He is the kid who opened his Bible app before bedtime no matter where he was because that's who his mama and daddy raised,' Jones said. Cops Say Handcuffed Car Chase Suspect Steals Police SUV, Starts 2nd Car Chase
A man in Texas is facing multiple charges after authorities say he led police in two high-speed pursuits in one night — including one in which he was handcuffed. According to a report by Fox 4 News Grand Prairie, the man was arrested for allegedly stealing a Cadillac; then, while handcuffed in the back of a police SUV, he stole that vehicle — and the second pursuit began. According to authorities, 22-year-old Kendral Pickett was driving a stolen Cadillac on Interstate 20 in Grande Prairie, Texas; police were called when motorists spotted the car driving erratically and without headlights. ABC 8 Dallas reports that the Cadillac crashed during a pursuit that reached speeds of 100 mph, at which point Pickett fled on foot before eventually being tracked down by a police K-9 unit and arrested. Police say Pickett, who suffered minor injuries during the arrest, was handcuffed and placed in the back of a Chevrolet Tahoe patrol vehicle while awaiting medical treatment. However, the Tahoe did not have a partition between the front and rear seats — so authorities say the suspect managed to wiggle the handcuffs in front of his body, climb behind the wheel of the police SUV and speed away, sparking chase number two of the evening. According to authorities, Pickett reached speeds of 100 mph behind the wheel of the Grand Prairie patrol vehicle before police deployed spike strips, causing the suspect to lose control of the SUV, which rolled down an embankment. Pickett reportedly suffered minor injuries in this second pursuit and left the scene in an ambulance. Pickett now faces two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, two counts of evading arrest, one count of escape while arrested and assault on a public servant.
