'The whole campus and the whole [Atlanta University Center] is impacted by this,' Morehouse College staff member Angelo Pierre told Channel 2's Audrey Washington. 'His spirit was one of warmth... He was a phenomenal young man and was just a joy,' family friend Alene Devereaux said at a vigil in Virginia. Witnesses told police they saw the driver of the car walk away from the crash scene. When police arrived, they said they found Coleman's car still running with his cellphone inside. The 19-year-old, last seen wearing a Morehouse College jacket and black pants, was reported missing by his family. After days of searching, police dive teams found Coleman's body this week. 'It's unfortunate to be so young and to have that kind of future and potential ahead of you, see it kind of taken away by a mystery,' Pierre said. Police believe Coleman may have suffered a medical emergency while behind the wheel of his car. The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) and the Prince William County Police Department (PWCPD) stated that the body of Kyle Coleman, 19, was found in a retention pond in Fairfax County on Tuesday, June 10. According to the FCPD, officers and emergency crews responded to a 911 activation call from an iPhone at Galleria Drive and Tysons Boulevard on the evening of Friday, June 6. Upon their arrival, they found "an unoccupied 2019 blue Toyota Yaris in the tree line near the roadway." Authorities said that, according to an investigation, the Yaris was heading westbound on Galleria Drive, crossed into the eastbound lanes, exited the roadway onto the grass and hit a tree. Witnesses at the scene reported that a person was seen fleeing from the vehicle and possibly left the scene in another vehicle soon after the crash. 'Officers searched the vehicle and the surrounding area and did not locate any occupants involved in the crash or any evidence of foul play,' said the FCPD. 'The Fire and Rescue Department utilized thermal imaging technology in the area for any involved persons, which yielded no results.' Then on Saturday afternoon, the PWCPD received a missing person's report for Kyle Coleman. The following day, on June 8, the PWCPD elevated the case to critically endangered missing after the department received video footage of Coleman prior to the crash. On Monday, after the PWCPD shared the missing persons bulletin, FCPD detectives linked the crash to Coleman, authorities said, with both police departments working together in the case. That same day, a search was conducted that went into Tuesday. 'While conducting this search, our Underwater Search and Recovery Unit was able to eventually locate Coleman deceased, submerged in a nearby retention pond surrounded by thick brush,' the FCPD said, per the release. 'Through the review of subsequent surveillance footage depicting Coleman leaving the crash scene, detectives were able to confirm that no one else was involved in the crash.' According to NBC affiliate WRC and Washington, D.C. radio station WTOP, Coleman was a student at Morehouse College in Atlanta. 'He was a wonderful kid, like a joy. Really didn't give us any problems,' Kyle's mother, Cimmerian Coleman, told WRC about two hours before the body, at the time unidentified, was located. 'Just very well-liked, well-liked in the community, just very easy going. He was driven in terms of — with his leadership abilities, his academic abilities. Alene Devereaux, a family friend, told WTOP that Coleman was friendly, vibrant and popular. 'He was a leader,' Devereaux said. 'He was a leader both in school and in the community. He was sort of that total package. He was always a joy and a positive spirit to be around, and he remained that person till the very, very end.' Authorities say the crash occurred shortly after midnight. When officers arrived at the scene, Coleman was no longer with the vehicle. His body was recovered Tuesday evening from a pond near the crash site, according to the Prince William County Police Department. While officials initially withheld confirmation pending identification, an update posted to a GoFundMe campaign on Wednesday stated that the remains had been confirmed as Coleman's. "It is with profound sorrow that we share the heartbreaking news," Morehouse College said in a statement. "Our entire Morehouse family grieves this unimaginable loss." Coleman was described as a warm, humble, and peaceful presence on campus. A graduate of Battlefield High School in Haymarket, Virginia, Coleman served as Teen President of his local Jack and Jill of America, Inc. chapter from 2024 to 2025. A candlelight vigil was held at Battlefield High on Tuesday night, hours before his death was confirmed. Coleman is survived by his parents, Cimmerian and Keith Coleman, a Morehouse alumnus from the class of 1995; his older brother, Christopher; and his sister, Kayla. TYSONS, Va. () — Police are investigating the death of a teenager found in a retention pond in Fairfax County, not far from where he had crashed his car. On Wednesday night, Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) identified a body that was found as 19-year-old Kyle Coleman, of Gainesville, who had been reported missing out of Prince William County over the weekend. PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Police recover body from pond in Tysons; family of missing teen gather On Friday, June 6, at around 11:15 p.m., first responders were called to Galleria Drive and Tysons Boulevard for a 911 activation call from an iPhone. There, they saw an empty 2019 blue Toyota Yaris that had crashed into a tree near the roadway. FCPD said the Yaris was heading westbound on Galleria Drive when it crossed into the eastbound lanes and then left the road, hitting a tree. Witnesses there said they saw a person run from the car and 'may have left the scene in another vehicle' right after, according to FCPD. Officers searched the car and the nearby area but didn't find anyone involved in the crash or evidence of foul play. Thermal imaging technology was also used, but it didn't yield any results. ORIGINAL COVERAGE: Police looking for man who went missing after car crash in Fairfax County On Saturday, June 7, the Prince William County Police Department (PWCPD) received a missing person's report for Coleman. On Sunday, June 8, PWCPD received a video showing Coleman before the crash. PWCPD then escalated Coleman's case to Critically Endangered Missing. On Monday, June 9, the car crash was linked to Coleman's disappearance, and FCPD reached out to PWCPD to coordinate and help in the investigation. Both agencies began searching for him but it did not yield any results. On Tuesday, June 10, FCPD searched again on foot, using its Real Time Crime Center, drones, and other technology. Crews searched the woods and nearby water features and retention ponds. That's when Coleman's body was found submerged, surrounded by thick brush. FCPD: Ex-Youth summer program leader charged with secretly recording minors FCPD said that through reviewing surveillance footage, it was determined that Coleman left the scene of the crash, and detectives were able to confirm that nobody else was involved in the crash.
