Scandinavia sees off Illinois for Ballydoyle one-two in Goodwood Cup

Irish Times29-07-2025
Scandinavia got the better of stablemate Illinois in a thrilling finish to the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes, in a race overshadowed by a fatal injury to the veteran Trueshan.
The
Aidan O'Brien
-trained stable companions dominated the betting, so while Scandinavia was discarded by Ryan Moore, Wayne Lordan's mount was still only a 4-1 shot following his victory in the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket.
Illinois attempted to make all but Scandinavia drew upsides over a furlong out and the two had it between them, with the concession of 14lb ultimately proving too much for Moore's mount, who went down by three-quarters of a length. French Master stayed on for a never-nearer third.
O'Brien immediately signalled the St Leger at Doncaster as the big aim for his winner.

'Wayne gave him a lovely ride – in the race at Ascot [Queen's Vase] he was trapped six wide all the way and, then at Newmarket Ryan said he felt like a very good horse,' he said.
'Illinois went out there in front and looked to have the race won, but then the other horse got him.
'We went to the Gold Cup [with Illinois] without a preparation and I know we haven't seen the best of him.
'Scandinavia is a typical Justify, he just won't lie down, he puts his head down and won't be beaten.
'Lambourn didn't go to the King George as we had one eye on York for him. It's all out in the open and this horse is ready made for the Leger, which is where he will go.
'He [Scandinavia] travelled very well through the race, he has a great mind. Lambourn can go for the Voltigeur and then maybe for the Arc.'
O'Brien was also pleased with the performance of the runner-up, feeling his best is still to come.
He added: 'I thought Ryan did everything perfect today on Illinois. He was out there and had the race won, and then the other horse just came and got him.
'I don't think we've seen the best of Illinois yet because I think we went to the Gold Cup a year too early and his preparation wasn't right to win a Gold Cup.
'He ran an unbelievable race, and he'll have the rest of the season, but often when that happens it can stop the progression you would really want to come. I really think we haven't seen the best of him yet.'
Alan King's hugely popular Trueshan, winner of the race in 2021, was pulled up sharply by Hollie Doyle at halfway, with news sadly emerging his injury had proved to be a fatal one.

Crystal Black back in action for Ballyroan Stakes defence at Leopardstown

Gerard Keane hopes a successful defence of the Tote Ballyroan Stakes at Leopardstown on Thursday can open further doors for Crystal Black. The seven-year-old was unbeaten in all four starts last year, which saw the son of Teofilo triumph in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot before impressively landing this race by five lengths for his maiden Pattern win. Crystal Black made a return to action in the Alleged Stakes in April, finishing seven lengths adrift of Galen in fourth to end his winning streak. He subsequently underwent a wind procedure and Keane is looking forward to his stable star kickstarting his 2025 campaign, as he lines up a tilt at the final Irish Classic of season next month. "He's coming along, he had a little bit of a hobday," Keane said. "So he's coming along well, we are happy with his work and as good as we can have him without a run. He's probably 90% so it's a nice little race to start him back with. As long as he runs a nice race, we'll be happy. "He's got an entry in the Leger, so that is the plan if we think he is good enough to run in that, but that's in a month's time. "That's the plan – Ballyroan, the Leger – and then after that we will see what's happening then." Six-time Irish champion jockey Colin Keane is aboard for his father in the Group Three contest over a mile and a half. Sons And Lovers goes for Joseph O'Brien, the Noel Meade-trained Group-winning Layfayette also starts and Jessica Harrington has entered Sea The Boss. Johnny Murtagh's Siege Of Troy and This Songisforyou, trained by Emmet Mullins, complete the six-runner line-up.

What TV channel is Rijeka vs Shelbourne on? Stream, kick-off time & odds for Europa League qualifier

Joey O'Brien has downplayed a supposed advantage Shels have going into the tie CLASH IN CROATIA What TV channel is Rijeka vs Shelbourne on? Stream, kick-off time & odds for Europa League qualifier SHELBOURNE'S European odyssey has taken them to Croatia this evening for the first leg of a third qualifying round for the Europa League. They'll be hoping to hoping to buck the trend for League of Ireland sides on the road in Europe. As boss O'Brien explained: 'Irish teams . . . our record in Europe away from home against stronger teams and stronger countries over the years — it isn't very good.' Reds fans in Rijeka will reminisce about how their side famously beat Hajduk Split 4-3 on aggregate 21 years ago. Nevertheless, first-leg away wins against sides from higher-ranked leagues have remained very rare. Shamrock Rovers' victory in Molde in February of this year, St Pat's winning at CSKA Sofia three years ago, Sligo Rovers' wins at Rosenborg (July 2014) and Motherwell (July 2022) are the only ones in the past two decades. That just one of those four ties were ultimately won by the Irish side — Sligo beating Motherwell — highlights the scale of the task. Here's everything you need to know about to watch tonight's match: WHAT STREAM IS RIJEKA VS SHELBOURNE ON? Once again, this European fixture isn't being televised anywhere so fans will have to stream it via SolidSport. Purchasing the stream will cost €13. Kick-off from the Rujevica Stadium will be at 7:45pm Irish time. WHAT ARE THE ODDS? The home side are strongly fancied to win tonight at 2/11 while the League of Ireland Premier Division champions are 12/1 outsiders. A draw is priced at 9/1. Jose Mourinho wipes away tears as he pays heartbreaking tribute to Porto's Champions League-winning captain Jorge Costa WHAT'S BEEN SAID IN THE BUILD-UP? Boss Joey O'Brien has no doubt that doing it against Rijeka would be a monumental achievement for his side. He said: 'It's going to be a monster task but it's a task that we want and we're going to embrace. We're going to try and put our best foot forward and get a result. 'I think Rijeka are favourites, obviously. They won the league last year. European football is obviously difficult away from home. "It's going to be a really difficult game, but it's a game we can't wait for, we're really looking forward to.' 1 Shels sit fifth in the LOI table this season with 38 points from 26 games Like Shels, the Croats are on the 'champions path' but the fact that they have been parachuted into this stage of the Europa League is a surprise. They were knocked out of the Champions League by Bulgarian giants Ludogorets — who beat Shamrock Rovers in 2022 — after extra-time, having had two men sent off. And O'Brien believes Rijeka are a better team than Ludogorets and will still be disappointed. QUALITY OUTFIT The former defender added: 'I think they should have gone through. I'm sure they were probably feeling they were unlucky to get knocked out. 'I felt watching the two games, they were the better team and they had chances. In the second leg, they got a couple of lads sent off, so it was obviously really difficult.' He also dismissed the notion that tonight's opponents will be out of shape with the Croatian season having only started last Sunday. O'Brien continued: 'When you get to a certain level of player, and this is a certain level of team, they are obviously professionals. "The days are gone where in the off-season, lads used to go out on the batter and put on bleedin' a half a stone and then burn it off in pre-season. That's not the case anymore.'

Preview: Shelbourne facing tough task against Croatia champions Rijeka

Shelbourne are currently enjoying the main benefit of becoming SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division champions, as they travel to Croatia to take on Rijeka tonight. Hard to comprehend, perhaps, off the back of a disappointing 4-0 aggregate defeat to Azerbaijan side Qarabag, which ended their Champions League involvement, however, with the title comes the champions' path, offering a range of routes to remain active in Europe. Coupled with the fact that Joey O'Brien's side won their first encounter of the summer, beating Linfield over two legs, the Dublin club now find themselves potentially just 180 minutes away from guaranteed league phase football. This week's European escapade comes in the guise of the Europa League, with Shels facing Rijeka, and should they progress, it would move the Tolka Park side into the play-off round, which sets up a shot of league phase in the second-tier competition. Shels would face either PAOK from Greece or Austria's Wolfsberger, and that encounter would come with the safety blanket of a place in the league phase of the Conference League, where Shamrock Rovers proved more than competitive last season, staying active in Europe through the New Year and into the knockout stages. And even if Shelbourne fail to overcome the Croatians, they get another shot at the league phase against the winners of Linfield or Vikingur from the Faroe Islands. So everything to play for as the champions hit the road once again, this time to the Adriatic coast to take on the Croatian champions, who just kicked off their league campaign at the weekend with a 2-0 victory over Slaven Belupo. Rijeka are also looking to kick-start their European campaign following a Champions League exit at the hands of Bulgarian side, Ludogorets; beaten in extra time last Wednesday. Shelbourne were effectively out of the Qarabag tie after the first leg, following a disappointing 3-0 defeat at home, and sent a much-changed side into action for that away game last week. The result, losing 1-0 on the night, matters little ahead of tonight's game, however, the game did offer the management and squad a great chance to start preparing early for this Europa League encounter. And O'Brien appeared to be creating a template for future away days in European competition, which was evident on the night, with a very focused and disciplined performance, limiting the home side throughout the opening 45 minutes. Unlucky to concede on the stroke of half-time through a John Martin own goal, Shels' response was excellent in the second half as they grew into the game from an attacking perspective and had chances to restore parity, while maintaining a solid structure at the back. Shels also unveiled new goalkeeper, Wessel Speel, in that game, and the towering Dutchman looks a real addition to the team, while saving a penalty on his club debut. Another benefit of European exposure for League of Ireland clubs is the ability to create momentum, especially if things are not proceeding as planned on the home front. Shels' defence of their title has been a bit of a damp squib thus far, while also losing their inspirational manager, Damien Duff, on the eve of their European expedition, however, they bounced back from that solid outing in Baku by enjoying a 2-0 victory over Sligo Rovers on Saturday evening, and they will now take more positives into tonight's first leg. Fourteen points is too much to make up with just ten games remaining, so Shelbourne will not be going back-to-back in the League of Ireland, however, just like St Pat's last year, this European experience should instil confidence to move up the table and eye qualification to do it all again next summer. As for tonight's game, O'Brien will name a much stronger starting XI to take on the Croatians, with the main objective of remaining in the tie to take back to Dublin next week. But they will be coming up against a strong side who will have seen plenty of vulnerabilities in this Shelbourne unit when viewing their past European games, and there is no doubt that Rijeka will come out on the front foot and look to take a commanding lead into the second leg. O'Brien has been involved with Shelbourne over the past few years and was instrumental working alongside Duff to guide the team to the title, however, he is still attempting to put his own stamp on the current crop. The former Ireland international and Premier League man has a wealth of experience in the game, and will be hoping that things have started to turn around over the past couple of games. Defensive stability, combined with a hard-working unit in front, will be key for Shels to frustrate the hosts tonight, keeping things tight and offering little in the way of goalmouth chances. The Dublin club are also at their most dangerous going direct and moving quickly from defence into attack, which brought a certain amount of joy last week, with John Martin proving a real nuisance against the Qarabag defence. Shelbourne's out-of-possession performance will most likely have the most impact as to whether they can stay alive for the second leg, but they still possess a range of forwards who can hold up and link play, while bringing more than a modicum of physicality to the role, and they will be quietly confident that they can leave Croatia with a bit more than just a plucky performance.
