Dwight Muhammad Qawi, boxer who went from prison to champion, dies at 72
Qawi's sister, Wanda King, said he died Friday following a five-year battle with dementia.
Born Dwight Braxton in Baltimore, Qawi grew up in Camden. He competed in the boxing program at Rahway State Prison while serving a sentence for armed robbery, and turned professional at age 25 soon after his release in 1978.
In December 1981, Qawi — who legally changed his name in 1982 following his conversion to Islam — stopped Matthew Saad Muhammad in the 10th round to win the WBC light heavyweight belt. Qawi stopped Saad again eight months later, taking six rounds.
After a loss to Michael Spinks, the 5-foot-7 Qawi — called "The Camden Buzzsaw" — moved up in weight and took the WBA cruiserweight title from Piet Crous in July 1985. Qawi lost the title to future heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield in a 15-rounder in July 1986.
Qawi later fought as a heavyweight, with George Foreman stopping him in seven rounds.
Qawi retired in 1998 at age 46 with a 41-11-1 record and 25 knockouts. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2004.
After his retirement from the ring, he worked as a boxing trainer, youth advocate and drug and alcohol counselor.

A 42-year-old man was arrested on charges of killing a 35-year-old woman by slitting her throat and stabbing her multiple times in Madhya Pradesh's Burhanpur district, NDTV reported. According to the report, the incident happened at the victim's house after the accused barged in, allegedly because she had refused to convert to Islam and marry him. The accused, identified as Sheikh Raees, allegedly slit the throat of Bhagyashree Namdev Dhanuk and stabbed her multiple times, leaving her dead on the spot. He was arrested hours later. In a statement, the woman's sister accused Raees of killing Bhagyashree. She alleged the accused used to 'grab her hair, beat her, harass her, and had been pressuring her for marriage and religious conversion for a long time," the report quoted her as saying. 'My sister refused, so he entered the house at night and slit her throat," the woman's sister was quoted as saying. Meanwhile, the accused was charged under various sections of murder and atrocity, and was taken into custody. In a separate incident, the Gurugram Police arrested a woman and her neighbour, with whom she was allegedly having an affair, along with three others, on charges of murdering her husband and hiding his body. The victim was identified as Vikram (37), a resident of Dundahera village, who originally hailed from Nawada in Bihar. Vikram's wife, Soni Devi (35), told the police during questioning that she and the main accused, Ravinder (34), plotted the murder with the help of online content, as her daughter had seen their inappropriate video on his phone and had told her husband about it. Giving details of the entire episode, the spokesperson said that Soni Devi had filed a complaint at Udyog Vihar police station on July 28 that her husband was missing. On July 31, the woman filed another complaint in which she alleged that Ravindra, a neighbour, raped her in March 2025 while her husband was away for work. Burhanpur: In a chilling crime that has sent shockwaves across Madhya Pradesh, a 35-year-old woman was brutally murdered in Navara, Nepanagar police station area, for allegedly refusing to convert to Islam and marry her tormentor. The victim, Bhagyashree Namdev Dhanuk, was attacked inside her home allegedly by Sheikh Raees (42), who slit her throat and stabbed her multiple times, leaving her dead on the spot. UP Man Booked For Raping Minor, Pressuring Her To Convert Religion
Budaun: A man here been booked for allegedly raping a minor girl while impersonating as a Hindu, police said on Sunday. Arbaaz is a former hookah bar operator, they said, and is on the run. His hookah bar shut down in 2022. He was booked at Sadar Kotwali Police Station on Saturday at the direction of Senior Superintendent of Police Brijesh Singh. The girl, about 17, in her complaint, alleged that when she first met Arbaaz in July 2022, he introduced himself as Shivam alias Bobby and wore a red thread on his wrist. Over time, he befriended her and took her to Delhi in September 2022, where he allegedly drugged and raped her multiple times, the FIR said. The girl alleged that Arbaaz filmed the assaults and threatened to make the videos public if she did not convert to Islam. The FIR says that several men used to operate from the now-closed hookah bar, allegedly targeting Hindu girls, drugging them, filming them, and blackmailing them for sexual and psychological exploitation. On July 16, this year, Arbaaz allegedly intercepted the girl, assaulted her, and threatened her against pursuing legal action. She approached Sadar Kotwali police, who detained the accused briefly but released him within half an hour, the FIR states. Dissatisfied, the girl submitted a written complaint to the SSP, after which a formal case was registered under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act. Circle officer Rajnish Upadhyay said that Arbaaz was earlier booked under the Gangster Act and was jailed.
