Gary Lineker's final Match Of The Day opening: ‘It wasn't meant to end this way'
As the episode started, Lineker said: 'It wasn't meant to end this way… but with the title race over and the relegation places confirmed, the Champions League was all we had left to talk about about.'
His early exit comes after he faced criticism for sharing a social media post about Zionism which featured an emoji of a rat, historically used as an antisemitic trope.
Lineker, the BBC's highest-paid presenter, issued an unreserved apology as it was confirmed he would leave his presenting role at the BBC early and will no longer front the corporation's coverage of the 2026 World Cup or the FA Cup next season.
Presenting the final episode alongside fellow pundits, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, with whom he also hosts podcast The Rest Is Football, Lineker's departure will be marked with a tribute similar to the one given to Ian Wright when he left in May 2024, it is understood.
Lineker joined the programme after starting out as a BBC Radio Five Live presenter, also working on Grandstand during his early years in broadcasting.
He is the co-founder of Goalhanger Podcasts which makes The Rest Is History series and its spin-offs about politics, football, entertainment and money.
The presenter was temporarily suspended from the BBC in March 2023 over an impartiality row about comments he made criticising the then-government's new asylum policy.
In February of this year he was also among 500 other high-profile figures who signed an open letter calling on the BBC to rebroadcast a documentary, Gaza: How To Survive A War Zone, to BBC iPlayer.
Gabby Logan, Kelly Cates and Mark Chapman will replace the Leicester-born star and share the presenting role on Match Of The Day from the next Premier League season.

However, James maintained that incorporating the nose-biting was a "stroke of genius" as it demonstrated how "messy, violent and visceral" battles truly were. Yet that wasn't the sole mishap onset, as the leading man fractured his collarbone. Co-executive producer and Rabbit Track co-founder Kitty Kaletsky disclosed that James had tumbled from his horse whilst filming. "It ended up being great because James had a break scheduled," Kitty laughed. James added: "It was painful but luckily this goes to show how incredible and collaborative this crew was and we managed to sort of deal with it. "It was during a rehearsal and I fell off and landed on my shoulder and actually it was a remarkably quick recovery. "It was quite painful. For the latter half of the shoot, some of those battle scenes I'm yelping very loudly and the yelps are pretty authentic." I mean you should always be able to hold your fist but the other guy, he instead like holding the distance, he kind of moved forward right as he was swinging. "And they were also you know MMA fighters. So his tooth went out, blood out. And then the other guy, of course, because he hit the tooth, broke [his knuckle], he had to have stitches in his hand as well."

The former rugby legend, 39, was one of the 15 celebrities to be announced for the BBC show this week, however, it has emerged that Chris nearly turned down the gig due to his shocking situation. The Sun reports that the sports star, who is married to opera singer Camilla Kerslake, 37, was subjected to a campaign of harassment from the woman after briefly meeting her twice at work events last year. Six months after their meeting, Chris was then said to have been targeted by the woman who proceeded to threaten violence and spread false allegations about him and his colleagues - causing Chris to contact the cops. It is reported that the woman, who is now on the National Police Wanted List, has fled the country and is being pursued by the police. A source told The Sun: 'Chris almost turned down Strictly because of what this woman has been putting him and his family through. She's made some disgusting threats. It has been awful for them. 'Chris and Camilla have been told by the police they're not alone. This woman has form for what she's been doing to them and has done it to other people too.' They added that the couple, who tied the knot in 2018, are the 'latest victims' in a 'string of lives' the woman attempted to 'destroy. Strictly bosses are said to be aware of Chris' ordeal and are supporting him. The insider added that Chris 'bit the bullet' and only went ahead with his Strictly stint for the sake of his son Wilding, four, who told his dad that he wanted 'mummy to laugh at your dancing'. Hibs player ratings vs Livingston as two new signings steal the show
Hibs will face Rangers in the quarter-finals of the Premier Sports Cup after a comfortable 2-0 win away at Livingston during their last 16 clash. Less than 72 hours on from a energy-sapping Conference League triumph after extra time over Partizan Belgrade, changes were inevitable. Six in total came into David Gray's side, with new signings like Raphael Sallinger, Miguel Chaiwa and Klidje amongst those given the nod. With a play-off crunch to come against Legia Warsaw midweek, it was a test of how far the squad depth truly stretched. A Scotland international, Champions League experienced midfielder and seven figure striker aren't the worst deputies to turn to, on top of a chance for youngster Kanayo Megwa at right-wing-back and Alasana Manneh in midfield. Hibs had settled into the game nicely and looked the more menacing when it came to the final third, with last ditch Livi tackles needed consistently. That lead they endeavoured to gain was eventually secured, a Boyle corner flicked on by Klidje, making it's way through a ruck of bodies and into the net. A Jack Iredale stumble showed another was needed to make sure of this, Robbie Muirhead's swing and miss providing a warning shot with the game separated by one goal. That moment came and went quickly though with control soon exerted on this match early in the second 45, Campbell missing Hibs' latest chance to put the game to bed from close range. Livi started opting for the route one approach which forced Hibs into a more defensive minded approach but with every launch into the box came the distinct threat of the visitors countering. In the end it was a moment of powerful magic that won it, Mulligan slamming the ball beyond Prior to give Hibs' rotated cast just rewards for their dominance in proceedings.
