Scots lawyer charged with child abuse appeared on TV as 'legal expert'
Attendees only discovered his conviction via an internet search after he became embroiled in a heated debate with Mike Pilbeam, a former McClure's client and lead campaigner on the issue. A paedophile lawyer appeared on TV as a legal 'expert' despite being charged with child abuse. Alan Eccles was handed 300 hours of community service after he admitted taking part in sick conversations about child sex abuse online and sharing images of youngsters. But despite having already appeared in court charged with the offences, Eccles, 44, appeared on a TV programme in April about a Scottish law firm's closure as an 'expert in setting up trusts'. And even days after his guilty plea, brazen Eccles attended a community meeting about the collapse of McClure solicitors with former clients and MPs. Attendees only discovered his conviction via an internet search after he became embroiled in a heated debate with Mike Pilbeam, a former McClure's client and lead campaigner on the issue, who had set up the meeting to help those affected. Pilbeam said: 'There were a number of individuals who had used Alan Eccles at the meeting and had a degree of sympathy with him over the altercation. 'But when one member Googled him the following day and saw the report about the charges he had faced and his guilty plea, that sympathy disappeared.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Thousands of people say they had family trusts which they didn't know about and have had to pay extortionate fees to wrestle ownership of their homes from McClure's trustees. On the programme, which aired on April 4, Eccles spoke extensively about how he had helped dozens of former clients of McClure solicitors, which shut down in 2021. The community meeting took place on May 9 in the south side of Glasgow. The Sunday Mail previously revealed Eccles worked for the Scottish Youth Parliament during a time when the organisation was accused of mishandling complaints about child sexual harassment. SYP said he had no involvement in the probe into handling of complaints.

Glasgow musician hails 'peaceful' Kneecap protest as rapper appears in court
Ruairi Brannigan showed support for Liam O'Hanna, who goes by the stage name Mo Chana, at London's Westminster Magistrates Court on Wednesday. A Glasgow musician hailed Wednesday's Kneecap court protests as "one of the most peaceful protests I have been to" - while also performing with his bandmates and giving a speech to the crowds. Ruairi Brannigan, 28, left his home in the city to show support for rapper Liam O'Hanna, who goes by the stage name Mo Chana, at London's Westminster Magistrates Court. O'Hanna, who is also known as Liam Og O Hannaidh, appeared in court charged with a terrorism offence over an incident at a gig on November 21 last year. "I think this is the ideal protest: no violence, no bigotry and an expression of peace. The fact it's on terrorism charges is ridiculous. "It is politically motivated policing and a targeted campaign by the British Government against Kneecap." O'Hanna and bandmates Naoise O Caireallain and J J O Dochartaigh were cheered by hundreds of supporters as they arrived in "Free Mo Chara" T-shirts earlier today. Dozens surged around the entrance of the court building as they made their way inside, with some also entering the lobby before the hearing, trying to get close to the Belfast trio. O'Hannah was charged last month after allegedly displaying a flag in support of proscribed terrorist organisation Hezbollah at a gig in November last year. The court heard the 27-year-old is "well within his rights" to voice his opinions on Israel and Palestine, but the alleged incident at the O2 Forum in Kentish Town, north London, is a "wholly different thing". After the brief hearing concluded, the defendant exited the court building to a festival-like atmosphere, with fans waving flags, playing drums and one supporter setting off a smoke canister. During the hearing, the allegations against him were summarised by prosecutor Michael Bisgrove, who said: "It's not about Mr O hAnnaidh's support for the people of Palestine or his criticism of Israel. "He's well within his rights to voice his opinions and solidarity, as is anybody else. The allegation in this case is a wholly different thing and deals with a video recording. "In November of last year, he wore and displayed the flag of Hezbollah, a proscribed terrorist organisation, while saying 'up Hamas, up Hezbollah'. "Of course, support for the one is not the same as support for the other. So the issue in this case, and the reason it has come to court, it centres on the apparent support by Mr O hAnnaidh of a proscribed terrorist organisation." Wearing a dark zip-up jacket and trousers, the defendant spoke briefly to confirm his identity at the beginning of the hearing. Hundreds of fans, along with journalists, crammed against the doors of the court building as they waited for the performer to leave. Outside court following the hearing, O Caireallain, led the huge crowds in chants of "Free Palestine". Wearing sunglasses and a keffiyeh, Mr O Caireallain said: "For anybody going to Glastonbury, you can see us there at 4pm on the Saturday. "If you can't be there we'll be on the BBC, if anybody watches the BBC. We'll be at Wembley in September. But most importantly: free, free Palestine." O hAnnaidh was released on unconditional bail until his next hearing at the same court on August 20. The Norther Irish rap trio were due to perform at this summer's TRNSMT Festival, in Glasgow, but their performance was axed over police fears over safety. Police Scotland previously said allowing them to perform at Glasgow Green on July 11 would require "a significant policing operation". The Belfast trio were also criticised over 2023 gig footage that appeared to show a band member saying: "The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP."

Rapist who followed Scots schoolgirl down street before 'opportunistic attack' jailed
Sadeq Nikzad targeted the 15-year-old in broad daylight in Falkirk town centre on October 16, 2023. A man has been jailed for raping a Scottish teenager after following her down the street. Sadeq Nikzad targeted the 15-year-old after trying to strike up a conversation with her. The 29-year-old spotted her walking in Falkirk town centre on October 16, 2023, and started chatting to her, repeatedly asking for her mobile phone number. He then made sexual remarks to the youngster, before leading her to a nearby courtyard, where he raped her in broad daylight. He denied the offence and faced trial. Nikzad was convicted by a jury at the High Court in Edinburgh in March. Sentencing was deferred and he was jailed when he appeared at the High Court in Livingston on Wednesday, June 18. He was given a 12-year extended sentence with nine years in custody and was placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for life. A Non-Harassment Order was also imposed. The order - which will also run indefinitely - bans Nikzad from approaching, contacting or attempting to contact the victim. Speaking after sentencing, Katrina Parkes, Procurator Fiscal for High Court Sexual Offences, said: "This was an appalling, opportunistic attack on a young girl who should have been safe going about her daily business. "The victim should be commended for reporting Sadeq Nikzad to the police, ensuring that he has now been held accountable while also protecting others from harm. "This type of offending will not be tolerated, and I hope this prosecution sends a clear message to men who commit serious acts of sexual violence against women and children. "I would urge anyone who has experienced similar crime to report it. You will be listened to and supported as we use every tool available in seeking justice." Detective Inspector Forbes Wilson, from the Forth Valley Public Protection Unit, said: "This was a particularly harrowing attack which was carried out during daylight in a busy town centre. "Nikzad's heinous actions had a profound effect on his young victim and I would like to commend her strength throughout this ordeal. "I would also like to thank local officers for their excellent work which ensured Nikzad was identified, arrested and off the street within a few short hours following the incident. " Police Scotland remains committed to tackling sexual crimes and bringing those responsible to justice. I'd encourage anyone who has been a victim of such crimes to come forward and report it to us. "We'll thoroughly investigate and have specially trained officers and partner agencies to support you throughout." Chief Inspector Alexander Hatrick, Area Commander for Falkirk, added: "We understand that crimes of this nature have a serious impact on the local community. We will continue to work closely with partners to address any such concerns in the area."
