Emmys: Netflix Doc ‘The Remarkable Life of Ibelin' Submitted for Exceptional Merit Award (Exclusive)
The Remarkable Life of Ibelin, Norwegian filmmaker Benjamin Ree's Peabody Award-nominated Netflix documentary about a physically-disabled and socially-isolated young man whose vibrant online friend-group is only discovered by his family after his death, has been submitted and accepted for consideration for the Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking Emmy, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
For this special category, documentaries are submitted to the TV Academy's documentary peer group for initial consideration, and must meet three criteria: (1) exemplary filmmaking, (2) profound social impact and (3) innovation of form. If they clear that hurdle, as Ibelin has, they become ineligible 'in any other documentary/nonfiction special or series program area,' and are forwarded to a special jury, which ultimately picks three or four titles each year for a nomination. In other words, they either end up with a nomination in this category, or none at all.

Marc Maron's 3-Word Response to Ending His 'WTF' Podcast
Marc Maron had a typically succinct three-word response to the news that he will end his WTF podcast in the announced the news on the June 2 episode of his long-running show, which featured an interview with John Mulaney. 'WTF will turn 16 years old on September 1. Sixteen years, it's a long time. It's a long time to do anything,' Maron said during the show's opening. 'All of a sudden, you're old and you realize you've been doing something for a long time. This started in the old garage. No one knew what a podcast was. I was coming out of a horrendous divorce. I was wanting to figure out how to continue living my life. Things were not looking good for me,' he recalled. Simply put, Maron said: 'We're burnt out.''We have put up a new show every Monday and Thursday for almost 16 years and we're tired,' he explained. 'And we're utterly satisfied with the work we've done.' 'When Brendan and I started this thing, all we knew was that we were going to do it every Monday and Thursday. And there was no way to make money. There was no way that we knew how to build an audience or anything. We were doing it in the garage in the beginning that was just a garage filled with junk. And it slowly evolved into the show that became what you listen to twice a week. Sixteen years we've been doing this and we've decided that we had a great run and now, basically, it's time, folks. It's time. WTF is coming to an end, and it's our decision. 'Thankfully, we both realized, together, that we were done,' Maron continued. 'There was no convincing or pushback, or arguing. We were done. And it's okay. It's okay for things to end…This was a show that started when there were no podcasts. And now, there is nothing but podcasts.'Though podcasts had been around for nearly a decade before WTF, Maron's show was one of the first to garner mainstream attention and is largely credited with launching the current podcast boom. The success of the show transformed Maron's career from that of a cult standup comedian to a successful presenter and actor, with roles in Joker and on Netflix's Glow. His next project, the Apple TV+ series Stick, in which he stars opposite Owen Wilson, premieres Wednesday on the streamer. Maron is also the subject of an upcoming documentary, Are We Good?, directed by Steven Feinartz. New episodes of WTF drop every Monday and Maron's 3-Word Response to Ending His 'WTF' Podcast first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 2, 2025

Prince Harry Spoke to Princess Diana's Brother About Changing His Last Name to Spencer & I'm Floored By the Prospect
When I first saw the headlines, I took it with a grain of salt: Over the weekend, The Mail on Sunday reported that Prince Harry spoke with his uncle, Charles Spencer, about the idea of dropping his royal last name of Mountbatten-Windsor in favor of using his late mother Princess Diana's surname, Spencer, instead. But could it really be true? As with many royal things, the sources felt spotty, but as more and more publications picked up the news, the gravity of the Duke of Sussex even considering a move like that hit me: The state of royal relations between father and son (and William) must be bleaker than we ever all, the move—which Diana's brother, Charles Spencer, is said to have talked Harry out of, according to the reports—would have also affected his children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, who are currently sixth and seventh in line to the British throne. (For example, it would have changed Lilibet's name from Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor to Lilibet Diana Spencer.) It also would have read like a royal mic drop and a permanent and symbolic severing of any remaining familial get me wrong: We already know that the state of Harry's relationship, specifically with his father King Charles, is practically non-existent in the wake of the Duke of Sussex's battle for U.K.-based security, per his recent interview with the BBC. But the idea that he would adopt his mother's last name feels like a blow that would remove all associations with the House of Windsor, not to mention chart a path that he couldn't take back. (That said, to formally align his identity with Diana's would not only carry a great deal of meaning for Harry, it would make sense given how similarly their life trajectories inside—but especially outside of—the royal sphere seem to align.)As for Charles Spencer's role, reports state that the 9th Earl Spencer—who recently saw Harry during a rare visit to the U.K. to attend the funeral of his uncle, Robert Fellowes, last year—talked him out of it and told Harry that the legal challenges to a decision like that would be 'insurmountable.' (Both William and Harry are notably close with Diana's brother.) Of course, this isn't the only name change drama that's cropped up for the Sussexes as of late. When Meghan Markle's recent Netflix show, With Love, Meghan, first debuted, much was made about her revelation to actress Mindy Kaling about changing her last name to Sussex—a move that solidified her family's collective identity, even if it wasn't formalized. 'I love that that is something that Archie, Lili, H and I all have together. It means a lot to me,' she shared. To be clear, based on reports, it sounds like Harry was just putting feelers out. (It's also good to know he has someone like Charles Spencer to lean on in times like this.) But a move like that would be major—and, sadly, speaks volumes about where things currently stand.
