Ari Asters father advised him to stop screenwriting after Beau is Afraid underperformed at box office

Washington DC [US], July 30 (ANI): The 'Hereditary' director Ari Aster's father advised him to stop screenwriting and focus on direction after his film 'Beau Is Afraid' underperformed at the box office in 2023, reported Variety.
During a recent appearance on the 'WTF with Marc Maron' podcast, as quoted by Variety, Aster said his father suggested he stick to directing only after his 2023 film 'Beau Is Afraid' underperformed at the box office.
"When 'Beau Is Afraid' flopped, my dad did tell me, 'Uh, maybe you shouldn't write the next one. He might've been right," said Aster as quoted by Variety.
Despite the advice, Aster wrote his follow-up feature, 'Eddington,' which is currently in theatres. A24 and Aster are hoping for a win from the small-town dramedy starring Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal after "Beau" grossed 12 million USD worldwide against a 35 million USD budget.
Aster said he was "pretty sad" about the poor critical and commercial reception of "Beau," but added that a few stray messages of support helped him deal with the disappointment.
"I was pretty sad that it was, like, so maligned. There are a lot of people who reached out to tell me that they loved it...that helped, but yeah, no, it was a bummer because it was a huge, you know, it lost money, and critically, I wouldn't say it was, like, reviled, but it was definitely, like, there was no consensus whatsoever," said Aster as quoted by Variety.
He continued, "All these things you take away after you release a film, and you're like, 'OK, it's out of my hands now, I can't really avoid people's reactions, responses.' It's like, you know, you kind of learn something...No matter what the response, you're proud of for sticking with [your choice], and then certain things where you're like, 'Eh, I'm not sure if it was worth losing that much of the audience for that decision.' I think I ejected a number of people from the theatre. I could've used them."
Aster's latest feature is Eddington. It stars Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Luke Grimer, Austin Butler, Emma Stone and others.
The film was screened in Cannes, followed by a recent theatrical release. (ANI)

Diddy hasn't seen sun in 11 months, writes essays in ‘sensory deprivation,' lawyer slams ‘horrible' Brooklyn jail

Sean 'Diddy' Combs was recently convicted of transporting people for prostitution under the Mann Act. But he managed to beat the more serious charges, sex trafficking and racketeering, due to lack of evidence. According to his lawyer Marc Agnifilo, the verdict, after a gruelling month-long trial, is still a win because Diddy dodged the worst of it. Still, his team has been fighting for bail or house arrest. Speaking to Variety, Agnifilo slammed the Brooklyn detention centre for its brutal conditions, calling it 'sensory deprivation.' The former Revolt CEO was arrested last September after his Miami and LA mansions were raided by Homeland Security under Joe Biden's administration. Diddy's been locked up in Brooklyn ever since, and Agnifilo says he hasn't seen the sun once. 'One of the horrible things about the MDC (Metropolitan Detention Centre) is not going outside ever,' the lawyer said. He's been inside nearly 11 months, no fresh air, no wind, just artificial light around the clock. 'It's sort of like sensory deprivation,' he added. 'He wants to get out and be with his family.' Also read: Donald Trump says Diddy was 'hostile' toward him; says rapper's team asked for a pardon but he likely won't grant it Agnifilo said Diddy misses his kids badly. 'He's learned a lot. His time in jail has given him the ability to reflect and consider his life and look at all the blessings he's been given, his seven children, the fact that he's still close with the mothers of his children, and the life he's been given.' He revealed they speak daily. Diddy keeps to himself, doesn't socialise much with other inmates, and spends more time thinking, which the lawyer admits can take a toll. 'His view is: 'Have I lived up to the blessings I've been given?' And I think his conclusion is: 'Not in every aspect of my life have I lived up to those blessings,'' Agnifilo said. Agnifilo, who's handled several high-profile cases in the US, including Luigi Mangione (accused of killing Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare), said they've been putting in serious hours preparing Diddy's defence. Calling the disgraced mogul a 'smart man,' he revealed they worked together for 20 hours a day. 'Now, he doesn't have as much emphasis on the case, so he's been spending time on himself. He's been doing a lot of writing. He writes essays, some of which I think are beautiful and poignant and thoughtful.' The lawyer even claimed Diddy is trying to start a few programs for the inmates. Also read: Donald Trump risks losing more women voters if he pardons Diddy, can spark 'another Epstein-like situation' When pressed on whether they've asked Donald Trump for a pardon or even reached out, Agnifilo said he is not involved. 'There are times I think there's nothing to it, and there are times I think it's just rumour mill stuff. But I do not purport to know the president's mind. I really don't know,' he said. Trump, meanwhile, has made it clear he likely won't grant clemency, citing how Diddy turned hostile during his first term. He claimed they used to be friendly, but things went south. Still, Trump confirmed someone from Diddy's camp did reach out about a pardon. As for the case, nearly a month after the verdict and bail denial, Diddy's legal team has now filed a 62-page motion asking for the two guilty verdicts to be tossed, or pushed into a retrial.

Saiyaara Box Office: Blockbuster run continues Overseas in Third week, UK Goes Berserk

Saiyaara is headed for yet another blockbuster weekend at the overseas box office, kicking off its third week with a fantastic USD 800K Friday. The Friday business is just 34 per cent down from last week and 70 per cent higher than the first Friday. The third weekend is projected to be around USD 2.75 million, which will be one of the biggest ever. Remarkably, the film raked in more overseas than it did in India yesterday, despite being a massive domestic blockbuster. The film has tapered off a bit in India in the last couple of days, but the rampage continues overseas. The United Kingdom, already in mental mode, cranked it up even further with a staggering GBP 150K yesterday. This marks a 12 per cent increase from the same day last week, which itself was a huge number. Notably, the biggest third weekend for an Indian film in the country is GBP 282K of Pathaan, which Saiyaara will surpass in just two days. The UK will comfortably cross GBP 2 million on Sunday, and now GBP 3 million is starting to look like a very realistic target, if not easy. The film maintained its strong momentum in other markets as well, holding its own against the biggest blockbusters. The United States scored USD 165K, down just 28 per cent from last week. The gross numbers are comparable to those of Pathaan and Jawan. In the UAE, Saiyaara clocked nearly USD 150K, second only to Jawan in recent times, while Australia grossed AUD 70K, placing ahead of Pathaan and Animal and second only to Jawan. The total overseas gross for Saiyaara stands at nearly USD 13 million; it will be close to USD 15 million by Sunday. It remains on course to cross USD 20 million, though there will still be some work to do in the next two weeks. That said, when it has held up so well so far, it is likely it will continue to do so further as well.
