Islamabad says 21,700 Hajj pilgrims have left for Pakistan from Madinah so far

Arab News29-06-2025
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's post-Hajj flight operations are in full swing as 21,700 pilgrims have so far departed for Pakistan from Madinah, state-run media reported this week, with more expected to leave in the coming days.
Pakistan began its post-Hajj flight operations on June 11 with the arrival of a Pakistan International Airlines flight, PK-732, in Islamabad carrying 307 pilgrims. The flights are expected to conclude by July 10.
State broadcaster Radio Pakistan reported on Saturday that Pakistani pilgrims are arriving in Madinah following the completion of their Hajj rituals in Makkah. It said the post-Hajj phase has begun under the supervision of the newly established Main Control Office (MCO) to facilitate Pakistani pilgrims for their return to the country.
'So far, 21,700 Pakistani pilgrims have departed for Pakistan from Madinah, with the remaining expected to leave in the coming days,' the state broadcaster said.
It said the MCO, set up in coordination with the Pakistan Hajj Mission Madinah, has been equipped with dedicated sections such as Lost and Found, Complaint Cell, Airport Team and other support services.
It said all sections are fully operational to ensure seamless facilitation for pilgrims traveling from Makkah to Madinah before their return to Pakistan.
'The office is managing pilgrims' accommodation, food, transportation, and other logistical needs during their stay in Madinah,' Radio Pakistan said.
Pakistan received a quota of 179,210 pilgrims from Saudi Arabia for Hajj 2025, which was evenly divided between the government and private Hajj operators.
While the government filled its full allocation of over 88,000 pilgrims, a major portion of the private quota remained unutilized due to delays by companies in meeting payment and registration deadlines.

Pakistan to continue accepting Hajj applications for remaining 1,640 seats under government scheme

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will continue accepting Hajj applications for the remaining 1,640 seats under the government scheme on Thursday, the religious affairs ministry said, noting that torrential rains were causing difficulties for people in applying for the Islamic pilgrimage. Pakistan's religion ministry announced earlier this month that it has been allocated a quota of 179,210 pilgrims for this year's Hajj. Out of these, the ministry said around 118,000 seats have been allocated under the government scheme and the rest to private tour operators. The religious affairs ministry said on Monday it has received 114,500 applications under the government scheme since Aug. 4 and will continue to accept applications for the remaining ones. In a statement on Wednesday, the ministry said only 1,640 seats remain under the government Hajj scheme. 'It has been decided to continue accepting applications for the vacant seats tomorrow (Thursday), Aug. 21,' the ministry said. 'Applicants are facing difficulties due to rains and emergency conditions.' Heavy rains and floods in several parts of the country have killed over 400 people since Aug. 15. In Pakistan's northern Gilgit-Baltistan and northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, torrential rains since last week have killed over 400 people. In Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi, heavy rains have killed at least 17 people since Aug. 19. Pakistan has designated 14 banks to receive Hajj applications. 'Once all seats are filled, the designated banks will immediately stop accepting Hajj applications,' the ministry clarified. Under the government scheme, pilgrims can choose between a long package (38-42 days) and a short package (20-25 days), with costs ranging between Rs1,150,000 and Rs1,250,000 ($4,050–4,236). Applicants are required to deposit a first installment of Rs500,000 [$1764] or Rs550,000 [$1941] depending on the package, while the remaining dues will be collected in November. Saudi Arabia had approved the same quota for Pakistan in 2025, though private tour operators last year struggled to utilize their share, saying they faced technical and financial delays, even as the government filled its quota of over 88,000 pilgrims.

Pakistan completes clearance of 585 companies under new Iraq-Iran pilgrim travel regime

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's ministry of religious affairs has completed security clearance of 585 companies seeking to organize pilgrimages to holy sites in Iran and Iraq, as authorities move to operationalize a new, tightly regulated travel regime, the ministry said on Tuesday. According to a spokesperson, the ministry has begun scrutinizing applications for registration as Ziyarat Group Organizers (ZGOs), the only entities that will now be authorized to arrange pilgrimages under the restructured system. 'Security clearance of 585 companies has been completed,' the religious affairs ministry spokesman said in a statement. 'Registration certificates for pilgrimage companies that complete the required documentation are expected to be issued soon.' The ministry said 95 new companies had submitted documents during the most recent extension period. Document submission from existing companies will continue until Aug. 31, while new firms can apply until Sept. 10. The overhaul follows Islamabad's decision last month to abolish the decades-old Salar system, in which private caravan leaders managed pilgrim travel. The move came after officials confirmed that around 40,000 Pakistani citizens had overstayed or gone missing in Iran, Iraq, and Syria over the past decade. The government has also barred overland travel for this year's Arbaeen pilgrimage, citing militant threats in the restive Balochistan province bordering Iran, meaning all journeys to Iraq and Iran will be arranged through registered tour operators and air travel only. Under the new Ziyarat Management Policy, all pilgrimages must be organized through licensed groups, with operators directly responsible for ensuring that all travelers return on time. Companies that fail to meet requirements face license cancelation, the ministry has said. Authorities say the policy aims to address long-standing security and migration concerns flagged by host governments, while restoring credibility to Pakistan's management of religious tourism.
