Pamela's case still active, statements taken from 48 witnesses, say cops

PETALING JAYA: Investigations into the disappearance of Pamela Ling remain ongoing, with police recording statements from 48 individuals so far. Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Usuf Jan Mohamad said identifying the suspects believed to be behind her abduction had been challenging, as the vehicle used was fitted with a fake registration plate and had a mismatched chassis number. 'We've already taken a statement from the actual owner of the car, and he is not the suspect,' he was quoted as saying by Harian Metro after an event at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters. He added that the facial composite of the suspects was only about 40% accurate. Police are currently gathering evidence from the crime scene and pursuing various leads, including through reviews of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage. Ling, 42, was reported missing on April 9 while on her way to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters in Putrajaya in an e-hailing vehicle. A police report was lodged at 3.02pm the same day. Last month, lawyer Sangeet Kaur Deo said one of the vehicles seen in CCTV footage of Ling's alleged abduction was spotted near the Thai border. However, she said there had been no updates provided by the police regarding forensic testing of the items found in the car. Police previously revealed that five vehicles were involved in the incident, three of which had used cloned number plates. About eight suspects are believed to have been involved in the alleged kidnapping, two of whom were seen in CCTV footage wearing police vests. On May 15, Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Isa said that Ling's husband, Sarawakian businessman Hah Tiing Siu, had been arrested to assist in an investigation, but did not disclose the nature of the probe. Motorcyclist killed in Kota Belud

The fatal accident occurred at about 8am, with the victim pronounced dead at the scene due to severe injuries sustained in the crash. Kota Belud District Police Chief Supt Shahrudin Mat Husain said preliminary investigations revealed that the lorry, driven by a 60-year-old man, was making a turn from the left lane to the right when it hit the motorcycle travelling ahead. 'The collision resulted in severe injuries to the motorcyclist. Medical officers from Kota Belud Hospital who arrived at the scene confirmed his death,' Shahrudin said. The victim's body has been transported to the Forensic Unit at the Kota Belud Hospital for further procedures. Police urged the public to refrain from speculation and to come forward with any relevant information. MACC arrests Sabah duo over fake machinery, certification claims worth over RM3.6m
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Sabah has detained two businesspersons on suspicion of submitting claims containing false details for the supply of machinery and equipment, as well as certification under the Small and Medium Industry (SMI) Assistance Programme worth more than RM3.6 million. According to an MACC source, the two suspects — a man and a woman in their 50s — were detained at about 11 am yesterday when they turned up at the Sabah MACC office to have their statements recorded. 'Initial investigations found that the suspects had submitted two claims containing false particulars under the SMI Assistance Programme to the Department of Industrial Development and Research (DIDR) in 2022 and 2023. 'One of the claims was for the supply of retort machines and entrepreneurs' equipment worth over RM400,000, while the other involved MeSTI, My Food and halal certification services worth over RM3.2 million,' the source said. Meanwhile, Sabah MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy, when contacted, confirmed the arrests and said the case was being investigated under Section 18 and Section 28(1)(c) of the MACC Act 2009. Karunanithy said both suspects were released after posting RM1,000 from the RM10,000 bail imposed on them and would be charged at the Kota Kinabalu Special Corruption Sessions Court this Thursday. Meanwhile, in SELANGOR, the state MACC detained a company director for allegedly submitting documents containing false details involving travel claims and the purchase of air conditioners amounting to about RM33,000. According to a source, the female suspect, in her 50s, was detained at about 1 pm yesterday when she turned up at the Selangor MACC office to give her statement. 'Initial investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have committed the offence between 2022 and 2023. 'She is believed to have submitted travel claim documents and air conditioner purchase claims totalling about RM33,000 when both transactions were never carried out,' the source said. Selangor MACC deputy director Khairul Izwan Karim, when contacted, confirmed the arrest and said the case was being investigated under Section 471 of the Penal Code, and that the suspect would be charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court tomorrow. — Bernama

Zara likely had 20-30 injuries

Kota Kinabalu: At least 20 to 30 injuries were possibly detected by pathologists doing last Sunday's post-mortem on Form 1 student Zara Qairina Mahathir, according to a Daily Express observation outside the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, here, where it was conducted. Our reporter painstakingly recorded each time the family lawyer holding a watching brief during the autopsy rushed into the room. Pro-bono family lawyer Shahlan Jufri was called in every time they confirmed an injury, whereby the specialists gave their views and explanation on each injury. 'Every injury was looked at and assessed,' he said, adding that he took note of the injuries that were highlighted by Dr Jessie Hui (Queen Elizabeth Hospital 1) and forensic pathology consultant Dr Khairul Anuar Zainun from Sultan Idris Shah Hospital in Serdang, Selangor. The team who worked non-stop for eight hours checked her remains thoroughly for all kinds of injuries, especially those she may have sustained due to alleged bullying. Shahlan said each injury was evaluated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) and he was briefed on the nature of the injuries. However, he declined to reveal anything, saying it is up to the authorities. "I witnessed the post-mortem process right to the end as the pathologist checked through every part of the body including internal organs,' he said. Zara was found unconscious in a drain near her school dormitory from an apparent fall from the third floor of her hostel in Papar district on July 16. She died the next day at the QEH and buried at her hometown in Sipitang. However, there were doubts over the circumstances leading to her death with questions raised about the possibility of her being a victim of school bullying. Her mother Noraidah Lamat, 45, subsequently through her lawyers raised questions about the thoroughness of the police investigation as no autopsy was carried out. Subsequently, the Attorney-General's Chambers told the police to exhume the body so that a post-mortem could be carried out. Shahlan said the autopsy was done in a transparent manner with no interference by any quarter. Shahlan together with legal partner Hamid Ismail were appointed by Noraidah to represent the family. He said the autopsy report was not a public document but would be revealed in court if an inquest was held. For an inquest to held, a Special Coroner's Court would establish facts that led to a sudden death that remained unexplained. A coroner has to decide whether there is a criminal element in the case of the death. The last time a Coroner's inquest based on popular public interest was held was in 1979 to establish how the 11 people on board the Nomad plane, including then chief Minister Tun Fuad Stephens, met their deaths on June 6, 1976. The inquest in that case was only held three years later because nobody volunteered to head the inquest, saying it was a 'hot potato' until a young magistrate then, Datuk Ansari Abdullah took up the challenge. A Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department task force has been formed to take over the investigation into Zara Qairina's death. Inspector-General of Police secretariat (corporate communication) said the task force consisting of nine officers and personnel had been deployed to Sabah. 'The task force is part of the police's commitment to ensure the investigation is conducted transparently and thoroughly,' the secretariat said.
