Maruti Suzuki Jimny Reaches 1 Lakh Sales- Here's How It Fares Against Mahindra Thar
Maruti Suzuki Jimny was first launched in the Indian market in June 2023. Since then, the off-road capable five-door version of the SUV has recorded sales of over 1 lakh units. As per Autocar Professional's report within two years, the vehicle has achieved cumulative sales of 1,02,024 units. This consists of 26,180 units sold in the domestic market (launch to end of April 2025) and 75,844 exported units (launch till end of April 2025) showing a high demand for the vehicle in the market overseas.
Based on the aforementioned numbers, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny is trailing far behind one of its major rivals i.e., the Mahindra Thar range in terms of sales numbers. With the three-door Thar and the Thar Roxx, the SUV range has crossed 2.5 lakh sales milestone with a total dispatch of 2,59,921 units (since launch in October 2020 till end of April 2025). It is to be noted that the Thar has been around longer in the Indian market than the Jimny and got a boost with the launch of the Thar Roxx.
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny enjoys a decent popularity in the global market in its three-door avatar. To replicate this popularity, the brand launched the five-door version in the Indian market. Aiming to attract off-roader buyers, the vehicle brings a body-on-frame design with a 4x4 system. Sold via the brand's premium Nexa channel, the SUV is sold at a starting price of Rs 12.75 lakh (ex-showroom) in India. It is manufactured in the Gurugram plant and exported to international markets like Japan.
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny features a single 1.5-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, which gives out 105 hp of power and 134 Nm of torque. It comes paired with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed torque converter automatic. As per the automaker's claims, the manual version offers a fuel efficiency of 16.94 kilometers per liter, whereas the automatic version achieves a mileage of 16.39 kilometers per liter.
Meanwhile, the Mahindra Thar comes at a starting price of Rs 11.50 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Thar Roxx starts at Rs 12.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Both the SUVs have 4x4 powertrain and petrol and diesel engines with options of manual and automatic transmissions.

Air India says in process of completing one-time Boeing 787 safety checks
New Delhi: Air India on Saturday said it is in the process of completing the one-time safety inspections, as mandated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), for its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet. This move comes in the wake of the tragic crash of a London-bound Air India flight (AI 171) from Ahmedabad. In a statement shared on social media platform X, Air India said that nine of its Boeing 787 aircraft have already undergone the required safety checks. 'Air India is in the process of completing the one-time safety checks directed by the Indian aviation regulator, DGCA. These checks are being carried out on the Boeing 787 fleet as they return to India, before being cleared for their next operations,' the airline said. 'Air India has completed such checks on nine of the Boeing 787 aircraft and are on track to complete this process for the remaining 24 aircraft within the timeline provided by the regulator,' it added. The airline added that it is on track to complete inspections for the remaining aircraft within the timeline specified by the regulator. These checks are being conducted as the aircraft return to India and must be completed before the planes are cleared for their next flights. However, the airline also emphasised that the additional checks may lead to longer turnaround times and could cause delays, especially on long-haul international routes that operate under strict airport curfews. Passengers are being advised to check their flight status before leaving for the airport. The airline is offering refunds or complimentary rescheduling to customers affected by delays or cancellations caused by these safety inspections. The DGCA had ordered enhanced inspections on Air India's entire fleet of Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft equipped with Genx engines following Thursday's deadly crash in Ahmedabad. The directive includes a range of preventive maintenance measures such as inspections of fuel systems, cabin air compressors, hydraulic systems, and flight control systems, along with engine-related tests. The checks must begin with effect from June 15 and compliance reports are to be submitted to the DGCA. Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing. Meanwhile, as part of its commitment to support the victims' families, Tata Sons has reiterated that it will provide Rs 1 crore in compensation to the families of each individual who lost their life in the crash -- including passengers, crew members, and those on the ground. A Tata Sons spokesperson added that the group will also cover the full medical expenses of all those injured in the incident, ensuring necessary care and long-term support.

PM Modi to begin 3-nation visit to Cyprus, Canada, Croatia on Sunday
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a visit to Cyprus, Canada and Croatia on Sunday, with the focus on his planned meeting with his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney on the margins of the G7 Summit that is expected to reset bilateral relations after diplomatic row over the killing of a Khalistani separatist. Modi will begin the three-nation tour by travelling to Cyprus during June 15-16, only the third visit by an Indian premier and the first in 23 years. Modi will hold talks with President Nikos Christodoulides in the capital Nicosia and address business leaders in Limassol, the external affairs ministry said while announcing the visit on Saturday. In the second leg of the visit, Modi will travel to the resort Kananaskis in Canada during June 16-17 to participate in the outreach session of the G7 Summit. This will be his sixth consecutive participation in the summit and he is expected to hold several bilateral meetings with other leaders attending the meet, including Carney. The tour will conclude with a visit to Croatia on June 18, the first by an Indian premier. Modi was earlier scheduled to visit Croatia last month but the trip was called off because of hostilities with Pakistan. He will meet Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and President Zoran Milanović and the visit will underscore India's commitment to strengthening engagement with partners in the European Union (EU), the ministry said. The decision to travel to Cyprus on the way to the G7 Summit was influenced by Turkey's support for Pakistan during last month's military clashes with India, people familiar with the matter said on condition of anonymity. Turkey recognises Northern Cyprus, comprising territories seized by Turkish forces in 1974, while India has maintained close ties with the Republic of Cyprus, which too has backed New Delhi on issues such as terrorism and Kashmir. In a break from past visits from the Indian side, the Prime Minister is expected to visit northern areas of Cyprus, close to Northern Cyprus, the people said. In recent years, India has strengthened ties with both Cyprus and Greece as part of its outreach to the Mediterranean, bolstering both trade and strategic ties. From bakers to pregnant women, PAU's fresh wheat varieties cater to specific & evolving consumer needs
Ludhiana: Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), which once made the country self-sufficient in foodgrain production, is now leading efforts to make wheat varieties that meet the evolving demands of different segments. In the early years, when food security was a challenge in the country, PAU's primary goal was to develop high-yielding varieties. This was especially evident during the Green Revolution as the university adapted and developed several wheat varieties, playing a crucial role in making India self-sufficient in wheat production. Such varieties, with some yielding up to 30 quintals of wheat per acre, transformed Punjab into the food bowl of the country. However, as yields increased, concerns emerged about the quality of wheat, particularly the aroma, softness, and whiteness of chapatis made from traditional varieties. Over time, consumers began to notice that modern high-yielding varieties lacked the flavour and light texture of the older desi wheat. Many even began sourcing wheat from other states like Madhya Pradesh despite the higher costs. This consumer demand for quality rekindled research efforts at PAU. After nearly a decade of work, the university in 2020 introduced a breakthrough variety — PBW1 chapati. Though its yield is relatively lower — 18 to 19 quintals per acre, it offers excellent chapati quality, comparable to traditional desi wheat. It is superior in aroma, softness, whiteness, and taste. It remains soft and doesn't dry up quickly — the dough made from this wheat remains soft for up to 72 hours, a marked improvement over modern varieties that tend to darken and dry up quickly. This variety is an improvement on the desi variety, having the similar qualities, but more resistant to the diseases. In a further push to meet nutritional demands, PAU also developed PBW zinc 2 last year, a biofortified wheat variety with 25% more zinc content than conventional varieties. It yields around 23.5 quintals per acre, which is on a par with traditional wheat varieties. It is targeted towards pregnant women and growing children, as zinc is an essential micronutrient for immune function and development. This variety is an improvement over the earlier PBW zinc 1 released in 2017, offering enhanced nutritional benefits without compromising on yield. As another addition to specialised varieties last year, PAU also introduced PBW1 biscuit, a variety tailored for the baking and processed food industry. It was released last year. Derived from European germplasm and adapted to Indian agro-climatic conditions, this variety shows superior spread factor, which is the key requirement in baking high-quality cookies, so the cookie size and crunchiness is better for the same amount of dough. It has already attracted international interest, with a non-exclusive agreement signed with General Mills (USA). Farmers interested in growing this variety for the bakery segment are encouraged to collaborate with PAU. Dr VS Sohu, principal wheat breeder at the department of plant breeding and genetics, said, "The university is focusing on high-quality varieties along with high-yielding ones. These are premium quality varieties, in which the yield may be slightly less, but these can be sold by farmers at a premium to specific markets, if they have a proper marketing channel and ready customer base in place." PAU vice-chancellor Satbir Singh Gosal emphasised that the university is focusing on creating market-driven, high-quality wheat varieties that go beyond traditional yield goals as well. "The aim is to innovate and advance solutions to meet the requirements of health-specific consumers and nutrition-sensitive populations. One such variety which is under development is a low glycaemic index wheat, especially for individuals seeking to manage blood sugar levels. The VC said PAU continues to play a pioneering role, not just in ensuring food security, but in shaping the future of food quality, nutrition, and market-oriented agriculture."
