Proposal for installation of a statue of socialist leader George Fernandes, besides naming a road each after astronaut Shubhranshu Shukla and scientist Ram Baksh Singh will be tabled by members of the EC.
Statue of former defence minister George Fernandes is proposed near Lesa substation in Vikas Nagar Sector 6. Fernandes, known for his role during the Kargil War and a political career spanning several decades, served as a key figure in national defence and social movements.
The link road connecting Basant Vihar Colony to Kanpur bypass highway may be named after Group Captain Shubhranshu Shukla, astronaut from Lucknow who was part of Indian Air Force and recently returned from space mission AXIOM 4.
Another proposal seeks to name road near Indiranagar Sector 8, leading to Rani Laxmibai Memorial School, after scientist Ram Baksh Singh, remembered for his pioneering research in developing a chemical method to generate gas from cow dung and plants, a technique that laid the foundation for wider adoption of biogas technology in the country.
An executive committee member said the proposals reflect the civic body's intent to honour local and national figures who contributed significantly in their respective fields. Decisions are expected after formal approval in the meeting.

Bangladesh Election Commission to publish nationwide draft of new polling centres by Sep 10

Dhaka, Aug 20 (UNI) The Bangladesh Election Commission will publish the draft list of polling centres nationwide on September 10, ahead of the country's national polls in 2026, reports Daily Star. The body will publish the final list of the polling centres on October 20, after objections or claims are accepted and resolved. The EC issued letters to district election officers today in this regard, signed by the EC's Deputy Secretary Md Mahbub Alam Shah. As part of its efforts to create a roadmap for the new national elections, the EC established a Polling Station Setup and Management Guidelines-2025, to ensure efficient and impartial administration of polls across various local government bodies, free of any outside influence. The list of polling centres for the national election must be preserved and finalised, and published in the special issue of the gazette at least 25 days before the election, with the deadline for submitting objections or claims regarding the draft being set for September 25, and the date for their settlement set as October 12. DMs refute SP's charge, Akhilesh says their action has exposed EC

1 2 3 Lucknow: A day after three district magistrates (DMs) rebutted Samajwadi Party 's claims of "illegal deletion of names" from electoral rolls in 2022 assembly polls, party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday said the move has exposed the Election Commission which had till now denied having received the complaints from his party. DMs of Kasganj, Jaunpur and Barabanki on Tuesday night had junked SP's allegations that names of voters were deleted illegally from electoral rolls in their districts. "We had filed 18,000 affidavits regarding names which were illegally deleted from the electoral rolls in the 2022 UP elections, but the EC had outrightly denied having received the complaints. The sudden activism of the three DMs in responding to our complaints has at least exposed the EC," he said. "For now, the issue is between the EC and the DM. It is for them to decide who is speaking the truth," the SP chief said. He questioned the "sudden activism" of three DMs and reiterated his demand for a probe into what he described as a "nexus" between the BJP govt, poll panel and the local administration. "Why have the DMs suddenly responded after so many years?" Akhilesh said. He said the three have formed an alliance and "lies" was the glue that was holding them together. He added that "superficial responses" by the officials amounted to an admission of their involvement, which should also be investigated. The DMs should provide copies of death certificates of the voters who have died. Kasganj DM Pranay Singh referred to the complaint regarding eight names having been deleted in Amapur constituency. He said seven names were removed as they appeared twice in the voter list and the name of one voter was removed after his wife filled Form 7 for deletion of name. Jaunpur DM Dinesh Chandra said the complaint regarding the removal of five names was received from the Jaunpur assembly seat. Five of them had died before 2022 and this was confirmed by their family members and the corporator concerned. He dismissed the complaint as "baseless and misleading". Barabanki DM Shashank Tripathi said the complaint of two names having been deleted was wrong and that the names were present in the list. Akhilesh condemns attack on Delhi CM Lucknow: Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday condemned the attack on Delhi CM Rekha Gupta earlier in the day. The CM was addressing grievances of the people during a Jansunvai at her residence when she was slapped by a man. "It is sad that a public representative who is a chief minister and is a woman had been targeted like this," Akhilesh said talking to the media. After 'vote chori', it's 'satta chori', claims opposition, says bill aimed at keeping Naidu, Nitish in check

Priyanka Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi NEW DELHI: Even as it anchored the protest against the bill on unseating jailed ministers and CMs in the constitutional provisions, Congress claimed BJP brass was conjuring up the provision to keep a check on its two allies - CMs Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar - a political spin that struck a chord with the rest of the opposition as the issue flared up Wednesday. Rahul Gandhi said the bill takes the country back to "medieval times" when a king could just remove anybody at will, just for not liking somebody's face. In the thick of opposition protest on "vote chori", Modi govt's move on a constitutional amendment to provide for automatic dismissal of any minister who has been jailed for 30 days, initially surprised anti-BJP camp. But INDIA bloc soon concluded it was a BJP bid to "distract" people from "vote chori" that has triggered a national campaign under a united rival camp. Congress MP K C Venugopal said, "When allies like Naidu and Nitish need to be threatened... the home minister brings this dangerous bill that strikes at the heart of the constitutional principles." The spin is not only in step with opposition's jibes post-2024 that Modi 3.0 is governing on crutches, but adds an intrigue to it. INDIA has been relishing the fact that TDP chose to write to EC on SIR in line with opposition's concerns and in defiance of BJP. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cable TV Cable TV Search Now It also inserts a mischief ahead of Bihar polls where BJP is aligned with JD(U). But the generic attack line, that further cements the unity among regional parties, is that BJP is looking to destabilise opposition states. Congress MP Manickam Tagore sarcastically said, "Amid 'vote chori', this is law for 'satta chori'." RSP MP N K Premachandran said it is Article 356, by which the Centre can dismiss a state govt, by another name. "It is, in fact, an easier 356. Under the proposed law, you don't need a governor's report or evidence. Just file a case and arrest a CM for a month, and the govt is vulnerable." Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee said, "When EC could not be twisted to their tune, they unleashed ED, with an ulterior motive to jail opposition leaders, topple elected govts, and steal people's mandate. This is a super emergency."
