Pregnant Liz McClarnon's rocky road to happiness: Atomic Kitten singer searched for love with a slew of pop stars, a demanding millionaire and even on Celebrity Love Island - before finding her eternal flame

Daily Mail14-05-2025

Liz McClarnon revealed this week that she is expecting her first child after a journey of 'painful IVF and dark times' in a two-decade struggle to conceive.
The singer, 44, is expecting with her husband Peter Cho, whose identity she kept secret until they quietly tied the knot in June 2023.
Yet despite finding her happy ending with Peter, Liz has chosen to keep their relationship out of the spotlight - not revealing any other details than his name and rarely posting about him on social media.
Her fiercely private romance follows on from a string of high profile flings, which included dalliances with a millionaire businessman and several household names.
As a result, the public watched on as she was drawn into slanging matches with boyband members and nursed a broken heart after a relationship with a footballer.
It was hardly surprising that as a member of Atomic Kitten - of one of Britain's biggest girlbands in the Nineties - interest in Liz's love life was at an all time high.
Yet it was her intense work commitments that brought an end to her first serious romance, and in 2001 she split from her childhood sweetheart, Tommy Hibbs.
Having met aged 14, Liz thought she had found her eternal flame with warehouse manager Tommy, with the couple planning to tie the knot in 2021.
Yet she called off her wedding just months before it was due to take place, admitting: 'We'd been together for a long time but being in the band has taken its toll.
'Our schedule over the past few months has been unbelievable and it got to a point where I hardly saw Tommy at all, but we are still the best of friends.'
Still holding on hope that they could patch things up in the future, she continued: 'Who knows, one day we'll [maybe] be able to sort this out. For now, I'm sad to say that we're no longer together.'
Yet work showed no sign of slowing down, with the band securing their second no 1 hit with Eternal Flame, and Liz on the promo trail just days after calling off her engagement.
It put the final nail in the coffin for Liz and her childhood love, who she had previously credited with keeping her grounded.
Yet the writing may have already been on the wall for the pair when they announced with their engagement, with Liz saying at the time: 'People in the music business are always trying to split us up.
'They said I would forget him when the band took off - he's even been described as my toy boy - but the truth is I love him more than anything in the world.'
She added that she had said yes to his proposal because he brought her a much needed sense of 'comfort and security'.
Following their split, Liz was briefly linked to England football legend Frank Lampard, but the pair did not speak out on the romance rumours.
Up next was Lee Ryan - who as a member of Blue - knew all about life in the music industry and the public eye.
The couple dated on and off for two years and were even briefly engaged before they split for good in 2003 amid allegations that Lee had slept with a lap dancer.
Yet Lee insisted he was the one to call things off, saying later: 'It just wasn't right any more.'
Opening up about their split, Liz told Closer: 'I'd never date another celebrity again. I was engaged to Lee and I didn't like having our relationship in the spotlight.
'For me, it leads to paranoia. You read things about each other and wonder who said what.'
Yet this mentality didn't last long and she soon began dating Kian Egan - who she had met when Atomic Kitten and Westlife were on the Smash Hits Tour.
Speaking about their budding romance, Liz said in 2003: 'Kian is really lovely. It's early days and we are both really happy. Let's just wait and see what happens.'
Meanwhile, a friend of Kian's said that the star was impressed by Liz's high IQ, noting: 'He keeps telling everyone how intelligent she is. It's sweet.
'He really missed her when she was away with the rest of the band.'
They added: 'Liz isn't some star-struck groupie. She is a successful and ambitious woman who knows what the industry is like.'
But within two months, the relationship had soured, and Kian went on to insist the short-lived fling was a mistake.
Speaking to Now magazine, he said: 'It was so bizarre and I'll never go back there. Liz is one strange cookie.'
Hitting back at the reports he had been trying to win Liz back, he claimed: 'From the day we broke up I've never called her number in my life and believe me, she's called mine.
'It was splashed over the papers that I'd been pestering her and calling her when I was drunk, begging her to take me back. But it was quite the opposite. I was certainly not obsessed with her.'
With another failed romance, Liz thought she'd try her luck on Celebrity Love Island in 2005, where she was was coupled up with Lee Sharpe - but the pair's relationship remained platonic.
She still found a man, however, enjoying a brief dalliance with a member of the crew, who she did not name.
Reflecting on their romance, she said: 'He walked up to me at the wrap party and was really sweet, very attractive and very nice. We hit it off that night.
'We did talk on the phone and stuff, it's cool. He's a nice guy and it wasn't that I don't like him or anything like that, but he's in Australia.
'We are just good friends now and that's honestly it. Nothing's going to happen there at all.'
It was then that Liz vowed to stay away from men for a period, saying: I can't be bothered with dating or huge egos any more.
'Huge egos scare me because it's very delusional to believe everyone loves you. Whatever man I end up with, I doubt he will be a celebrity.'
Yet while Liz's next romance saw her move away from the music industry's dating pool, she still dated a big name, footballer Lee Trundle.
While he too was in the public eye, Liz admitted she didn't know who the Bristol City striker was when he approached her in a Liverpool nightclub but he won her over by making her laugh.
The pair moved in together briefly but their romance came to an end by November 2007, with Liz later saying it was 'very lonely' having a relationship with the footballer.
She told The Sun: 'There are a lot of fixtures to play and a fair bit of travelling, so sometimes it was hard to see each other.
'My relationship with Lee sort of came to an end. We didn't love each other anymore and the split was amicable.'
Despite struggling to make it work with a footballer, her next boyfriend was also a sporting icon - Harlequins rugby star Ryan O'Neill.
The pair had known each other for 12 years - even enjoying a brief fling when Liz was in her 20s - before they decided to make a proper go of it.
They moved in together and got engaged but Liz insisted she was in no rush to tie the knot, saying: 'I've no need for marriage, apart from the fact that I'd like to be married before I have children. But that won't happen tomorrow.
'And you can plan a wedding very quickly, so you never know! I'm very interested in sparkly things, though - I could be engaged forever.'
Unfortunately, the romance fizzled out and they split in 2014 after two years together.
She met her next partner, millionaire businessman Andy Scott in 2016, but their relationship faltered after two years because Liz didn't like flying.
He told Femail: 'We're still good friends and she's a lovely girl, but I'm a risk-taker and an adventurer.'
The businessman - founder, owner and chairman of London-based investment company REL Capital - went on to make a public plea for a new partner, saying he wanted to find a 'special person' who was free to spend her summers sailing around the Mediterranean and winters skiing in the Alps.
With a string of very public romances under her belt, it made sense that Liz wants to keep details of her current partner to a minimum.
In 2022, Liz shocked fans and friends alike when she announced she was engaged while wishing her husband-to-be a happy birthday.
She took to Instagram to share a snap of her embracing her mysterious fiancé, surprising many of her friends who took to the comments.
Her large diamond engagement ring was visible on her ring finger, while she kept the identity of the man a secret.
Captioning the black-and-white photo she wrote: 'Happy birthday to my husband-to-be.
'YEP! I'm going to marry the most beautiful human I've ever known and it's his birthday today. Double yay!'
In June last year, Liz revealed the identity of her husband as they celebrated their first wedding anniversary.
The singer took to her Stories with two snaps of her handsome spouse, after his face was previously masked by confetti i n the photo from their big day.
Alongside a snap of Peter in the sunshine, Liz wrote: 'Guess what?! I've been married to my perfect match for a whole year, I love you Peter Cho!'
On Tuesday, Liz revealed the couple were expecting their first child together, sharing a video in which she showed off her baby bump.
During the video, she said: 'I've been keeping a secret from you, and I've mostly kept myself off social media because sometimes it was hard to smile.
'But after years of sometimes quite painful IVF and dark times, I'm pregnant! We feel like we've been given the world.'
Liz captioned the post: 'I started to record a video of me just telling you but I got too emotional so I thought I'd just hide behind this little announcement instead.
'I just can't believe we're here. So many have been through exactly what I went through and worse. ❤️
'I want to share what I can and add my voice and ears to those who already help others understand or deal with all that comes with IVF and loss after so much hope.
'I've been a part of some beautifully supportive communities. I'm so grateful.'

Mel Gibson, 69, chows down on pasta in Rome amid work on sequel to one of his iconic films

Mel Gibson was glimpsed having a laugh while chowing down on pasta in Rome - as he develops the sequel to one of his most iconic movies. The 69-year-old actor and director has apparently traveled to the capital of Italy in order to work on his upcoming film Resurrection Of The Christ. His picture will serve as the follow-up to his self-funded 2004 sleeper hit The Passion Of The Christ, directed by Gibson and starring Jim Caviezel as Jesus. The first movie began with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and ended with him emerging from the tomb, so the next one will presumably cover the 40 days the Bible says he remained on earth after his return from the dead. A source said Gibson is pre-production on the new film, via TMZ, and he was spotted indulging in the local cuisine in a restaurant on his downtime. When he noticed that he was being observed, he mischievously goofed off a bit, pulling extravagant faces and grinning broadly. The Braveheart star cut a casual figure during his latest outing, opting for a black V-neck t-shirt and a matching set of trousers. Jazzing up the ensemble with a necklace, the Apocalypto director slung a fashionable set of gleaming sunglasses from his shirt. The sighting comes just weeks after Gibson enjoyed an onstage reunion with Danny Glover, his co-star in another one of his legendary pictures, Lethal Weapon. The co-stars were onstage at a fan expo in Philadelphia, during which they fielded questions about the hugely successful Lethal Weapon franchise and its previously announced and long delayed fifth instalment, which will be directed by Gibson. Glover, 78 - whose Detective Roger Murtaugh famously claimed he was 'too old for this s**t' in all four Lethal Weapon instalments - was back in the spotlight some three years after his last screen appearance in 2022 black comedy American Dreamer. Joining the veteran star, Gibson, 69 - Murtagh's unpredictable and highly volatile partner Martin Riggs - showed off an enormous, greying beard as he took to his seat at the Pennsylvania Convention Center during Saturday's expo. Gibson previously confirmed that long-time co-star Danny will make an appearance in the latest film, reprising his role as LAPD Sergeant Murtaugh. The Australian star also told how he asked for Glover's blessing to direct the movie following the death of director Richard Donner - who took charge of the first four films. A source said Gibson is pre-production on the new film, via TMZ The Braveheart star cut a casual figure during his latest outing The co-stars were onstage at a fan expo in Philadelphia, during which they fielded questions about the hugely successful Lethal Weapon franchise Reiterating his intention to direct the feature in 2022, Gibson told Entertainment Tonight: 'Yeah, I am directing that. I'm really looking forward to it.' The star went on to add that his place behind the camera was bittersweet following the death of Donner in 2021. He added: 'I wish I wasn't directing it. I wish Richard Donner was still here to do it but left us untimely, and he actually asked me, he said "Hey kid, if I don't make it, you'll take the reins, huh?" I told him to shut up. 'I think it's an honor for me to be able to carry the flag for him'. And after getting Richard's blessing, Gibson told how he then turned to Glover to ask his thoughts on him directing, also confirming that his former co-star had agreed to reprise his iconic role. Gibson added: 'I called Danny [Glover] up, of course, and said "Hey, dude, is it okay with you if I direct this?", to which Glover replied "Yeah, let's go". He also insisted on having complete faith in Glover, adding: 'I know Danny's going to pull it off real well, too. He's kind of like the show pony in this one'. Gibson made the big announcement about the new film in 2021, where he began his address by paying tribute to the filmmaker who had previously spearheaded the action-comedy franchise. Gibson featured in the Lethal Weapon movies as the unpredictable and highly volatile partner of the Donald Glover character Gibson also recalled that the filmmaker had given him his blessing to continue the series in the future 'The man who directed all the Lethal films, Richard Donner, he was a big guy,' he expressed. Gibson also recalled that the filmmaker had given him his blessing to continue the series in the future. He remarked that Donner 'was developing the screenplay and he got pretty far along with it. And he said to me one day, "Listen kid, if I kick the bucket you will do it." And I said: "Shut up."' Gibson then noted that the filmmaker made a point of telling various individuals that the actor was more than capable of keeping the franchise going after his death. 'But he did indeed pass away. But he did ask me to do it and at the time I didn't say anything. He said it to his wife and to the studio and the producer. So I will be directing the fifth one.' It's understood that plans to shoot the new film are now underway after years of delays, with original screenwriter Shane Black also onboard. The film franchise also spawned a TV series, which ran for three seasons for 2021 with Clayne Crawford as Riggs and Damon Wayans as Murtaugh.

Dragonfly review – haunting, genre-defying drama of lonely city living

Twenty years ago, Paul Andrew Williams announced himself as a smart new British talent with his ferocious gangland picture London to Brighton, and his creativity has continued in film and TV ever since. His new film is a haunted, social-realist drama with elements of Mike Leigh but also moments of thriller and even horror. Williams isn't shy of stabbing us with an old-fashioned jump scare towards the end, which in fact challenges the audiences with its refusal of categorisation. There are two superb lead performances from Andrea Riseborough and Brenda Blethyn and an outstanding supporting turn from Jason Watkins. Dragonfly is about loneliness and alienation and about the eternal mystery of other people, the fear of intimacy and the unknowable existence of urban neighbours. Elsie, played by Blethyn, is an older woman who is quite capable of independent living in her bungalow, but a recent fall and an injured wrist has meant that her middle-aged son (Watkins), all too obviously to compensate for not visiting that often, has paid for daily visits from a private agency nurses. They are overworked and not doing an especially good job. Really, she doesn't need these nurses and by enduring them, Elsie is shouldering the burden of her son's guilt. Meanwhile nextdoor neighbour Colleen, played by Riseborough, is a continuingly strange presence. She is a melancholy, withdrawn figure, evidently on benefits and living with her huge American bull terrier, uncompromisingly named Sabre. Williams shows us that she is effectively living in a kind of platonic relationship, or mariage blanc, with this dog; the film periodically gives us startling shots of Sabre's colossal body in a kind of domestic nakedness sprawled on Colleen's bed. In a manner that may be insidious or predatory or just friendly and compassionate, Colleen befriends Elsie; the latter overcomes her initial nervousness of Sabre and she appreciates Colleen's forthright offer of help. Colleen goes down to the shops to get groceries for Elsie and after a few such trips they agree that what would be easiest would be if Colleen simply gets Elsie's debit card and Elsie gives her the pin number. Of course, the film allows us to suspect the worst and then suspect the worst of ourselves for suspecting it. Colleen seems to be unhappy and damaged but well-meaning, especially when she (for a laugh) buys them both a two-way radio so they can easily keep in contact – but then uses this radio to talk to Elsie late at night and semi-intentionally to allow bewildered Elsie to hear what's happening in Colleen's house. It is a riveting dual portrait of two gloomy people who really have, in a strange and dysfunctional way, found a new way of interacting and – importantly – this is a triangular relationship: Elsie, Colleen and the vast Sabre. But with a terrible inevitability, Elsie's uptight busybody son John (Watkins) arrives and there are awful consequences to a conversation he has with Colleen which Williams only shows us in long shot, withholding the truth about what he's saying. It's a stark, fierce, wonderfully acted film. Dragonfly screened at the Tribeca film festival.

K.O. (2025) Ending Explained – Does Leo survive the gang?

K.O. Plot Summary The premise of K.O. clings to all the usual tropes you'd expect from a flick like this, jumping straight into the action. Here, we follow aspiring MMA fighter Bastien, who finds himself in the ring with his bitter rival, Enzo. The pair go toe-to-toe in a relentless and pretty brutal sequence that immediately sets the tone and mood for the rest of the movie. Bastien's fight ends in tragedy when he counters a triangle hold into a full-on slam to the mat. Enzo's head crunches against the canvas, and unfortunately, he passes away as a result. Guilt-stricken, Bastien hangs up his gloves and disappears into exile. Fast-forward two years, and our reclusive hero is called back into action by Enzo's widowed wife, Emma. Her son, Leo, has gone missing after getting mixed up in the drug trade, and it seems he may be the target of some particularly nasty gangsters. With a bullseye on his back, Leo is in big trouble—and Bastien feels a moral obligation to do right by Emma. Who are the rival gang? Bastien heads off to find out the truth about Leo's whereabouts, where he winds up indirectly working with Captain Alaoui. The rival gang are called the Manchours. They're vicious and a lot of people are scared of them. They're fronted by a man named Abdul, a relentless gangster determined to grow his empire in Marseille – no matter the cost. Alaoui loses her badge thanks to getting too aggressive with a couple of gang members outside. She teams up with Bastien to get info on Leo's whereabouts, and they soon realize that he has valuable intel that could take down the Manchours. This explains why the gang are so interested in the kid – and why they want him dead. What is driving Alaoui and Bastien to fight so hard? Alaoui lives alone and doesn't have a partner. She's consumed by her grief though, still torn up over the passing of her brother. She has a history with the Manchours, stemming from her childhood. She grew up in the same neighbourhood as the gang and her brother began working with kids on the street. Unfortunately, when the Manchours started dealing drugs and getting the kids involved, her brother pissed them off badly. In fact, one night they tied him to a chair and burned him alive. Even worse, they sent the video to Alaoui and disappeared, until a year ago when they returned. They're smart and always one step ahead, building a criminal enterprise in Marseille – which Alaoui is determined to stop. What happens at the police station? After reuniting with Leo and a tense chase sequence at the apartment complex, the group make it back to the police station where Bastien explains why he's doing all of this. His father passed away when he was a kid and since then he was angry at the world and lashed out. Bastien chose fighting as an outlet and the irony is, this accident has caused Leo's father, Enzo, to die. He recognizes that Leo is going down a dark path and although Bastien didn't mean to kill the fighter, he feels responsible for making sure he steers the kid in the right direction. Bastien was lucky, having surrounded himself with good people and managing to turn a corner, away from a potential life of misery and crime. Who is the mole? Leo reveals in his police interview that the Manchours organized a big meeting with their contacts. Leo was new and shouldn't have been there but he showed up anyway. Here, the Manchour gang met with Andalou and his gang – the same guy we saw earlier tortured for the whereabouts of the drugs earlier in the movie. This was all a trap, organized by Andalou's contact. Leo saw Abdel Manchour kill a man right in front of him but unfortunately, was spotted spying on them and he decided to run. Leo got freaked when he saw the cops because that informant working with the gang happens to be 'The Cop'. It's here where Alaoui realizes there's mole in the midst… and it happens to be Vasseur. He immediately stabs Benoit in the neck before he's shot down. This explains why Leo never went to the police – he didn't trust them. Who survives the final fight? Outside, shots are fired at Sebastopol and the surrounding areas, sending officers out to check. Unfortunately, this leaves the station severely lacking in staff, prompting the Manchour gang to come in all guns blazing and shoot the place up. Alaoui does her best to fight back but Abdul is leading the charge. Through the fighting, Alaoui and Abdul wind up duking it out while Bastien handles Abdul's right-hand man, Driss. Bastien just about comes out on top while Alaoui kills Abdul after stabbing him in the eye and driving this through his skull. With police heading back, the gang breathe a sigh of relief after coming out in one piece. How does K.O. end? Leo is finally free and no longer hunted by the (presumably defunct) Manchour gang, while Emma is reunited with her son. It seems he'll now have a way of handling and channelling his anger, courtesy of Bastien's guidance too. As for Bastien, he intends to head out and carve a new name for himself, deciding that it's time to find something new to fight, looking out at the sunset ready for another day. Read More: K.O.
