Dodgers hold Phillies to four hits as Sasaki impresses

Japan Times06-04-2025

The Los Angeles Dodgers got back to their winning ways on Saturday thanks to the long ball and holding the Philadelphia Phillies to just four hits, as the visitors won 3-1.
Roki Sasaki started for the Dodgers, and the offseason acquisition from Japan gave the team his best outing in three starts. The right-hander, 23, allowed just three hits, two walks and an earned run over four-plus innings while striking out four.
Enrique Hernandez hit a two-run home run, and Michael Conforto had a sixth-inning solo shot, as the Dodgers avenged their first loss of the season. Max Muncy went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Anthony Banda pitched a scoreless fifth inning for his third win in as many decisions.
Tanner Scott threw a three-pitch ninth for his third save.
Kyle Schwarber had a hit and scored on Alec Bohm's RBI groundout. Aaron Nola (0-2) allowed three earned runs, seven hits and a walk over six innings while striking out two.
Sasaki overcame a shaky start. Schwarber led off the first with a single and advanced to third on Trea Turner's base hit to right field. Turner stole second base to put both runners in scoring position, but Sasaki allowed just one run while getting the next three batters.
That started a stretch where Sasaki retired 12 of the 13 batters. However, he would not qualify for his first major league win after being pulled in the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, Sasaki gave up a leadoff walk to J.T. Realmuto followed by a line drive single to Bryson Stott.
Banda entered at that point. Realmuto moved to third on Brandon Marsh's fly out to center field, but Schwarber flew out to Teoscar Hernandez in right. Stott was running and was doubled up off first before the Phillies catcher could score.
Los Angeles took the lead in the second. Muncy doubled with one out. Nola got Andy Pages to strike out, but Enrique Hernandez hit a fly ball that just cleared the left field fence down the line for his third homer of the season.
The Phillies had baserunners in both the eighth and ninth innings, but Dodger relievers ended Philadelphia's four-game winning streak.

One Piece sets sail for Dodger Stadium for One Piece Night pro baseball event and giveaways

Luffy and crew return to the City of Angels this summer. Luffy and his One Piece cohorts are always ready to set sail for new adventures in places they've never been before, and this summer that spirit is guiding them to Dodger Stadium for a collaboration with Major League Baseball. When the Los Angeles Dodgers face off against the Chicago White Sox on July 3, not only will it be the eve of Independence Day, it'll also be One Piece Night. The stadium will be decked out in special decorations featuring the cast of the hit anime/manga, and there will also be a number of One Piece 'activations' set up around the venue, some of which will be distributing an exclusive One Piece Card Game card illustrated by series creator Eiichiro Oda himself. Luffy's pitch being a 'strike'-type attack is a clever bit of wordplay, and another cool design detail is the combination of his banded straw hat and the Dodgers' iconic LA-logo cap. Speaking of headwear, while giving away baseball caps at the stadium is a long-standing fan-appreciation night fixture, on One Piece Night the first 40,000 fans in attendance will receive, appropriately, straw hats with both the Dodgers and One Piece logos. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Los Angeles Dodgers (@dodgers) This marks One Piece's third sports stop in the City of Angels, following their team-ups with pro football's Los Angeles Rams in 2023 and pro basketball's Los Angeles Lakers in 2024. One Piece's affinity for the city might have something to do with it being where Toei Animation's American HQ is located (unlike the just-announced Netflix One Piece Lego sets, the sports collaborations are specifically for the anime/manga arms of the franchise). It's also hard to ignore that the presence of Shohei Ohtani on the Dodgers' roster has turned pretty much all of Japan into Dodgers supporters, so the partnership is sure to please home-country One Piece fans too. It's worth noting that the Rams and Lakers both won their One Piece games, and this season the Dodgers have had two anime-related success stories, winning games featuring Pokémon's Pikachu and the Sailor Moon theme song, so hopefully Luffy will lead them to victory too. Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts Gifts Pink Toy Luxury Car to Shohei Ohtani's Baby Daughter

AP Photo/Jayne Kamin-Oncea Los Angeles Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani is congratulated in the dugout after hitting a solo home run in the seventh inning of a baseball game against the New York Mets, June 2, 2025, in Los Angeles. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and his wife have gifted Shohei Ohtani's baby daughter with a pink toy Porsche. Ohtani posted a video of him, Roberts and the toy car on his Instagram account. 'We had a little running practical-joke situation going on,' Roberts said Wednesday, 'but this was a gift for the baby.' Last May, Roberts joked that Ohtani should give him a Porsche when the slugger broke the Dodgers record for most home runs by a Japanese player. Ohtani obliged, gifting a purple toy model Porsche for Roberts' office. In breaking the record, Ohtani surpassed the mark set by Roberts, who was born in Japan, during his playing days. Ohtani went slightly bigger in March, when he left another toy Porsche in Roberts' parking space at Camelback Ranch in Arizona. Ohtani gifted Ashley Kelly, wife of Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly, a Porsche for her husband giving up his No. 17 when Ohtani signed with the Dodgers in December 2023. Ohtani's first child was born on April 19. He and his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, have not revealed the baby's name or any other information in keeping with Ohtani's penchant for privacy. Ohtani's reaction to the gift from Roberts and his wife Tricia? 'He was very grateful,' Roberts said.

Baseball: Ohtani goes 2-for-4, Dodgers kept quiet in loss to Mets

LOS ANGELES (Kyodo) -- Shohei Ohtani's 2-for-4 outing was one of the few bright spots for the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 6-1 loss to the New York Mets on Wednesday. The reigning National League MVP registered multiple hits for the first time in June, lining a single off former Los Angeles Angels teammate Griffin Canning (6-2) in the bottom of the third and reaching with a grounder in the eighth at Dodger Stadium. Ohtani directed some good-natured taunting from first base at Canning, who had gotten the Japanese star to fly out as he led off the game for the Dodgers. Pete Alonso homered twice for the Mets, putting them ahead 3-0 with his two-run blast in the first, then doubling the lead with a three-run shot in the eighth. The Dodgers did not get on the board until Andy Pages homered in the ninth as he went 3-for-4. Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts earlier presented a ride-on toy Porsche to Ohtani for his baby daughter, referencing previous car-related pranks between the pair. After breaking Roberts' franchise record for home runs by a Japanese-born player last May, Ohtani made good on a promise to buy the manager a car by gifting him a replica model Porsche. Ohtani had previously made headlines by giving Dodgers reliever Joe Kelly's wife a real Porsche in exchange for the pitcher's uniform No. 17. "We have a little running practical joke situation going on, but this was a gift for the baby," Roberts said.
