According to data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), investors allocated Rs 20,255 crore into mid and smallcap schemes in the first quarter of FY26—accounting for 30% of total equity inflows of Rs 66,689 crore during the period. Over the past 12 months, retail investments into these funds stood at Rs 90,075 crore, making up 23% of total equity flows of Rs 3.9 lakh crore, ET reported.
'A lot of retail investors continue to chase past performance,' said Harshvardhan Roongta, principal financial planner at Roongta Securities.
'Returns from mid and smallcap funds for three and five-year periods have been very high compared to large caps, which has kept investor interest intact.'
According to Value Research data, midcap mutual funds have delivered 21.3% average returns over the past three years and 27.4% over five years. Smallcap funds did even better, with 21.94% returns over three years and 31.28% over five. In comparison, Nifty 50 returned 13.55% and 18.58% over the same periods.
'Investors are looking to get exposure to some of the faster-growing segments of the economy, reflected in their preference towards midcap and smallcap funds,' said Dikshit Mittal, senior fund manager – equity, LIC Mutual Fund.
ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund noted in its July outlook that both midcap and smallcap indices continue to trade at valuation multiples far higher than historical averages. While valuations have eased slightly since their September 2024 peaks, they remain elevated.

The price-to-earnings (PE) ratio for the Nifty Smallcap 250 stands at 32 and Nifty Midcap 150 at 33.4—significantly higher than Nifty 50's 21.7, ET report said.
A Whiteoak Capital study showed that while large caps currently trade at a 10% discount to their five-year average, midcaps are at a 14% premium and smallcaps at a 28% premium to long-term averages.
Given this, wealth managers are urging caution. 'Aggressive investors should allocate only 10–15% of their equity portfolio to the mid and small cap space,' said Vishal Dhawan, founder, Plan Ahead Wealth Advisors.
Dhawan advised investors to stagger their investments through SIPs and maintain a long-term horizon of at least 10 years to avoid potential disappointment.

From Indian Bank to Jindal Steel— Ajit Mishra of Religare Broking suggests 3 stocks to buy for the short term
Stocks to buy for the short term: The Indian stock market benchmark, Nifty 50, experienced high volatility on August 7, after US President Trump announced an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports to the US. The index, however, ended with mild gains, snapping its two-day losing run. Ajit Mishra, SVP of research at Religare Broking, underscored that although tariff-related concerns triggered fresh volatility, the Nifty managed to hold above the 24,450 mark on a closing basis. This reaffirms the significance of this level as a strong support — the lower band of the previous consolidation range that had earlier led to a rally. Mishra believes a decisive move above the 24,800 could pave the way for a further rebound towards the 25,000 mark. "Amid the prevailing uncertainty, we continue to advise a cautious approach and prefer maintaining hedged positions," said Mishra. After a prolonged consolidation phase in the form of a rectangle pattern, Indian Bank shares broke out above the upper resistance band, signalling the start of a fresh up move. However, following the breakout, it underwent a time-wise correction, forming a new base above the pattern's neckline. This base-on-base formation reflects a healthy base-building process and resilience amid the broader market correction. The formation of a buying pivot, along with sustained closes above the 20-week EMA, confirms the resumption of the primary uptrend. Indian Bank technical chart Jindal Steel has recently signalled the end of its corrective phase by breaking out above the descending trendline. This was accompanied by a breakout from a tight rectangular consolidation pattern, supported by rising volumes—further reinforcing the bullish outlook. Jindal Steel is now trading above its 20-week EMA, adding to the positive bias. Moreover, the successful retest and rebound from the support zone suggest strong upside momentum following this period of sideways consolidation. Jindal Steel technical chart TVS Motor stands out as one of the top performers within the auto pack and is currently trading at all-time high levels, reflecting a sustained bullish structure. The price action continues to form a higher high–higher low pattern, confirming a strong uptrend, supported by key short- to medium-term moving averages. TVS Motor registered a breakout from a cup and handle pattern, accompanied by a notable rise in volumes—further validating the bullish continuation signal. Given the robust chart setup and a favourable sectoral backdrop, we expect the prevailing strength to persist and the positive momentum to extend further. Tunnel Road bidders want B-Smile to clear dust and debris
BENGALURU: Big companies showing interest in Bengaluru's Twin Tunnel Road project, have asked Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Limited (B-SMILE) to take up the responsibility of clearing silt and soil after boring, but the civic body has shot down the proposal. It said the company bagging the tender will have an investment share of 60% under the Build-Own-Operate and Transfer (BOOT) model and will have to deal with it, and the government will only facilitate it. The 16.75-km tunnel road will take away 40 per cent of traffic from surface roads once completed, says BS Prahallad, Director, B-SMILE. The agencies which took part in the meeting, asked the civic body to extend the technical bid meeting scheduled for September 3. According to Prahallad, the land required for the project is very little, as most of the work is underground, and such projects have already been done in Mumbai, where a 4.5-km tunnel road was built. 'We already have Rs 800 crore, which will be used as compensation for land acquisition, and the team is involved in correspondence between the Ministry of Defence and Government of India, as permission will be required to drill a tunnel below their land,' he said. While the issue of transporting soil and silt from the tunnel has just begun to crop up, geologists and environmentalists argue that the absence of a plan to move silt and soil may lead to an increase in pollution, as dust particles may get mixed with air during summer, while during the monsoon, the dumped soil will turn into sludge and may run into fields and roads if dumping sites are not identified and handled well. 'There are guidelines for transporting soil and silt. It has to be done in an enclosed system. Before the excavation or boring, a study will have to be conducted to know the weak and strong areas, and corrective measures will have to be taken,' said Professor D Parameshwar Naik, department of Environmental Science, Bengaluru University.
