Oscar Piastri's mum reveals the one thing she wishes her son wouldn't do if he is to challenge Max Verstappen to win the F1 Drivers' Championship

Daily Mail21-04-2025

Oscar Piastri 's mum, Nicole, wishes her son would be a little more risk-averse when attempting to take on Max Verstappen this season.
The Aussie driver zoomed his way to his third victory of the Formula One season on Sunday afternoon in Saudi Arabia and has now gone 10 points clear of Lando Norris at the top of the Driver Standings.
Verstappen placed second behind the McLaren driver after being handed a five-second penalty after he and Piastri battled for position at the very beginning of the race.
With the Dutchman taking pole position, with Piastri in second, the pair went wheel-to-wheel through the first two corners of the race, with Piastri standing firm and holding his position, ultimately forcing Verstappen off the track.
Racing stewards quickly issued the reigning champion with the penalty, judging that Verstappen had unfairly taken an advantage over the 24-year-old Aussie through the first chicane.
But Piastri's mother, Nicole, said she was 'horrified' by the moment.
'I kinda wish Oscar wouldn't hold his ground with someone like Max Verstappen,' she said, speaking to 4BC radio on Monday.
'That was horrifying, to be honest. But that's what he does and he will continue to do that.'
Since Oscar's rise to Formula One stardom, his mother, Nicole has also stolen headlines for her brilliant comments of support for her son on social media.
After he claimed victory at the Chinese Grand Prix, the 24-year-old had appeared in an Instagram reel published on McLaren's official account, playing a game alongside his team-mate Norris.
Nicole hilariously quipped in the comments section of the video: 'Once you're done playing games on your phone, Osc, do you think you could FaceTime me so I can congratulate you on your win in China?'
But while the young Aussie has been in epic form at the start of the 2025 season, his mum admitted that watching the races can be a very stressful experience.
'It's just the risk, and it's not so much Oscar, it's people around him,' she added.
'There is no sleeping when Oscar is racing at 300 kilometres per hour.
'He's very cautious by nature, and he's very calculated and clever in the way that he does everything.'
Nicole used the example of how her son's team-mate, Norris, had suffered a scary crash in qualifying after his car appeared to lose control after the Englishman drove over a kerb on the track.
'He took on Max at the first corner, which was a bit horrifying,' Nicole added.
'But typically, he won't take risks. But you can't trust that those around him won't miss.
'You just can't trust that those around him won't take risks.
'As we saw with Lando, a tiny mistake can be really dangerous. They are only human.
'It's nice that [Oscar's] doing well but my priority is just that he finishes the race and gets out of the car and walks away. If he finishes well that is just a bonus.'
Verstappen, meanwhile, admitted after the race that his battle with Piastri over the opening 100m of the race may have cost him victory in Jeddah.
'Yeah, potentially, it is what it is,' he said, when pressed if turn one had hampered his chances of winning.
He added in another interview: 'The start happened, turn one happened and suddenly it was lap 50 (the last lap). It just all went super fast,' the reigning world champion said.
'The problem is that I cannot share my opinion about it because I might get penalised also, you know, so it's better not to speak about it.'
Pressed on whether he was frustrated by having to bottle up his feelings on the matter, Verstappen responded: 'I think it's just the world we live in. You can't fully share your opinion because it's not appreciated, apparently, or people can't handle the full truth.
'For me, it's better if I don't need to say too much, it also saves my time, because we already have to do so much.
'It's honestly just how everything is becoming. Everyone is super sensitive about everything. And then, of course, what we have currently, we cannot be critical anyway. So, that's fine, less talking - even better for me.'
Meanwhile, Piastri's efforts this weekend saw him become the first Aussie to top the Driver Standings since Mark Webber in 2010.
'I'm very proud,' Nicole said of her son.

F1 has a growing problem as serving FIA steward brands driver 'a disaster'

In a period when routinely, on social media, accusations of bias in Formula 1 are slung around with abandon, the FIA really isn't helping itself. On the face of it, the appointment of Derek Warwick as one of the stewards on duty at this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix is a normal, entirely uninteresting decision. He's more than qualified for the role. Warwick is a veteran of 147 F1 race starts from his own racing career and has been a regular driver steward for many years now. Aged 70, the Brit is one of the most respected people in the F1 paddock whenever he pays a visit. But something has changed in recent times which should raise questions over whether he remains a viable candidate for a stewarding role – his latest media work. Specifically, Warwick is involved with a PR company which supplies quotes from famous names with credit to various gambling companies. One such set of quotes, attributed to Warwick, was sent around this week. In it, he opined that Lando Norris needs to stop making "silly mistakes" if he is to beat Oscar Piastri to the title, claimed Lance Stroll is a better driver than people give him credit for and said Yuki Tsunoda has "had a disaster" since joining the main Red Bull team. In another email, sent earlier this week, quotes attributed to Warwick said Max Verstappen was "absolutely wrong" to drive into George Russell at the Spanish Grand Prix and that people are "probably right" to suggest that the Dutchman should have been suspended for his actions. Of course, he is entitled to all of those opinions as a person and many will agree with him on some of those topics. But should he be sharing them in public, given he has the power in his hands when on duty as an FIA steward to hand out punishments to drivers for their actions on track – penalties that could be called into doubt based on his personal views? Well, based on the FIA's own example, he shouldn't. While Warwick remains an active F1 steward, having last served at the Miami Grand Prix in May and been selected for this weekend's event in Montreal, Johnny Herbert was cut from the governing body's pool in January. Explaining that decision at the time, the FIA said Herbert is "is widely respected and brought invaluable experience and expertise to his role... [but] his duties as an FIA steward and that of a media pundit were incompatible". Warwick too is widely respected and vastly experienced, but why is he allowed to continue to work in the role? Formula 1 fans can watch every practice, qualifying and race live with Sky's new Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle in a new deal that saves £192. As well as Sky Sports access, this includes more than 100 TV channels and free subscriptions to Netflix and Discovery+. To be clear, there is no reason whatsoever to suggest that Warwick or any active FIA steward would allow their personal opinions to affect their decision making. But the problem is that some people WILL make that accusation and, when an active steward is out there publicly criticising drivers, it's not a good look. Verstappen is one penalty point away from a race ban heading into this weekend's Montreal race. If Warwick is on the stewarding panel which hands him the punishment which triggers that ban, you can easily imagine what the reaction will be from fans of the Dutchman and of Red Bull – perhaps even the driver and team themselves. And it will be a problem for the FIA entirely of its own making.

Fresh Florian Wirtz transfer talks emerge as Leverkusen eye Liverpool star

Liverpool are already making moves in the transfer market as they seek more star power to bolster Arne Slot's title-winning squad ahead of the upcoming 2025-26 campaign Liverpool mean business in the summer transfer window. And after swiftly securing a replacement for the outgoing Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Reds are now closing in on a British record transfer. Arne Slot and Co are in a strong position after winning the Premier League and will be out to defend their domestic crown. The Dutchman will be given the funds to strengthen the squad after predominantly working with the same group of players he inherited from Jurgen Klopp last summer. ‌ While the focus is on incomings, a number of outgoings are expected, too. Darwin Nunez could be the biggest name to depart with Liverpool weighing up a move for a new No.9. ‌ With things heating up, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest transfer news and gossip from in and around Anfield... READ MORE: Fresh Wirtz talks We're getting closer to a deal but talks between Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen are ongoing over the finer details of the monstrous package that will see Florian Wirtz head to Anfield. The Reds will not be meeting the £126million price tag that Leverkusen have slapped on their sought-after star. But they are prepared to offer the Bundesliga outfit a guaranteed £100m, with the deal likely to eclipse the current British transfer record with add-ons. Talks are set to continue with a deal edging closer... Leverkusen eye Quansah There has been plenty of speculation that players could be included in a deal to get Wirtz over the line and Bayer Leverkusen have now been credited with an interest in Jarrel Quansah. ‌ The Athletic have confirmed that the £40million-rated centre half is indeed on the German outfit's radar, with Leverkusen in the market for a new defender. Any deal for Quansah would be separate to the blockbuster one involving Wirtz, who will likely become the most expensive Premier League player of all-time should a move to Anfield be finalised. Leverkusen are in the market for a new central defender after losing Jonathan Tah on a free transfer to Bayern Munich. Kerkez gets green light for move ‌ Milos Kerkez has been given the green light to join Liverpool - by his Bournemouth team-mate, Justin Kluivert. Kerkez is known to be the Reds' top target as they seek another left-back. Talks over a deal with one of the Cherries' star performers are ongoing with Kerkez keen on joining Arne Slot's side. And Kluivert has now told Voetbal Primeur: 'He'll probably go there. I hope so for him. He hasn't really said goodbye yet, but I hope he'll make it happen there.'

Defender Service joins Edinburgh City

Ambitious Edinburgh City have added another player to their squad ahead of the new Scottish League Two campaign. Defender Jake Service (pictured) has put pen to paper on a deal and the centre-half comes to the Meadowbank club after playing in the Lowland League for The University of Stirling for the last four years. Stranraer-born Service was part of the team which last season played Dundee United in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup at Tannadice in January 2023. United won 3-0 thanks to goals from Aussie full-back Aziz Behich after 45 minutes, Jamie McGrath with an overhead kick after 68 and a lob from Greg Middleton in 81 minutes. The university side won the East of Scotland Cup in season 2023/24 against Edinburgh City and he reunites with former team-mate, James Stokes, who scored the winning goal in that game. An Edinburgh City spokesman confirmed this is the first time that the 23-year-old has played at Scottish Professional Football League level. Like this: Like Related
