Kiwi sailing legend Burling joins Italy's America's Cup team
There are obstacles to Burling -- who skippered New Zealand to victory over Luna Rossa in 2021 -- being on the boat itself.
Under the provisional protocols for the 2027 regatta, as set out by the champions in May, no sailor can compete if they were part of a different team in the previous one.
Burling, who was pivotal to New Zealand's three successive wins (2017/21/24) skippering them in the last two, became a free agent in April when he was unable to reach an agreement with Team New Zealand.
"I've always loved racing against Luna Rossa and now to join this iconic team is a real honour," he said in a statement on the Luna Rossa website.
"The innovation and competitiveness they bring to the Cup has always inspired me.
"I'm looking forward to working hard alongside a world-class team, doing my part to help win Luna Rossa's first America's Cup."
Max Sirena, CEO of Luna Rossa, said he and the team were "thrilled" to have secured his services.
"Peter has been a long-time rival, and over the years we've come to deeply respect both his exceptional sailing talent and his sportsmanship on the racecourse," said Sirena.
"Even though his exact role has yet to be defined, he will certainly be part of the sailing team, reinforcing Luna Rossa's core leadership group and contributing to key areas of our development program."
Burling's split from Team New Zealand came, the latter said in April, because of the changing shape of the contest which is now to be contested in more regular cycles, meaning different requirements from team members.
The three-time Olympic medallist's America's Cup record is astonishing.
Burling was just 26 when he became the youngest-ever helmsman to win the America's Cup as challengers New Zealand beat Oracle Team USA 7-1 in Bermuda.
In the 2021 victory over Luna Rossa, he became, at 30, the youngest skipper to win the event.
He followed that up by skippering them to a 7-2 win over Ben Ainslie's British challengers, INEOS Britannia in Barcelona last year.

"My secret? There is no secret," she maintained. "My training discipline has brought me this far, and I get so much joy from the sport. "I enjoy it immensely and am very grateful for everything I have achieved in my career and have been able to experience. "I'm still very passionate. And competing at a high level, it's no secret that you have to be disciplined. "You have to work hard. And I think the fundamental or the primary thing right now for me is, I still enjoy what I do. And I think that's the greatest feeling." Fraser-Pryce added: "Good training alone is not enough, you also have to be able to translate that into competition. I want to nail my start on Friday, and I also want to see other technical details that I have worked hard on translated into competition." The decision to hang up her spikes, however, had not been a tough one. "It wasn't difficult at all," she said. "For me, I've been privileged, I'm blessed to be able to have had a lot of success in track and have some fantastic memories. "While I'm still working hard and maintaining emotion, I've not allowed my mind to get to a place of, 'Oh my God, I'm retiring'.

Mediobanca shareholders reject bid to acquire Banca Generali
Mediobanca shareholders rejected a roughly €7bn proposal to acquire wealth manager Banca Generali in a pivotal vote on Thursday. The Milanese bank said that 35% of investors accepted the proposal, just shy of the 50% plus one vote needed to pass. 32% of investors abstained, while 10% rejected the proposal. The outcome could threaten Mediobanca's independence as the bank seeks to fend off a takeover by Italian competitor Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS). Mediobanca rejected the bid from its smaller rival in January, warning that it would be 'strongly destructive' and weaken its business model. The proposed acquisition is — however — still on the cards, and Mediobanca investors have until September 8 to accept the offer. Thursday's vote suggests that many investors are not concerned about blocking the MPS deal. Mediobanca's largest shareholder, the Del Vecchio family, abstained from the vote, while the second-largest shareholder, business mogul Francesco Gaetano Caltagirone, rejected the proposal to acquire Banca Generali. Together, these two investors hold nearly 30% of Mediobanca, but they are also major shareholders in MPS and Banca Generali. Asset manager Amundi, lender UniCredit, and Italian pension funds also abstained on Thursday. Alberto Nagel, CEO of Mediobanca, said in a statement following the vote: 'This is clearly an opportunity, for now, missed for the development of our bank and the Italian financial system.' The Italian state had notably approved of the takeover, hoping that it would strengthen the country's banking sector. Nagel added that the vote's outcome could be attributed to shareholders "who expressed a clear conflict of interest in their engagement activities, putting (their interests) relating to other Italian situations/assets before those of Mediobanca shareholders'.
