RTM Langkawi Broadcasting Complex set to be completed in September
LANGKAWI: The construction of the Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) Langkawi Broadcasting Complex in Kuah here is expected to be completed in September, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
He said that, so far, he is satisfied with the project's progress, which has reached 49 per cent, since it was taken over by a new contractor in October 2023.
'Two years ago, this project was considered an ailing project. After stern action was taken together with the Public Works Department (JKR) by terminating the previous contractor and appointing a new contractor, we can see today that the progress of this project is encouraging and it is expected to be completed within the stipulated time.
'(Then) several matters will be scrutinised, including the issues of internet and equipment, and most importantly the (complex's) overall structure is almost finished and only a few more issues need to be looked into. Congratulations to the Kedah JKR for being able to complete this project,' he said.
He told reporters this after a working visit to the RTM Langkawi Broadcasting Complex Project here today. Also present was Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa.
Fahmi also expressed confidence that the project could be completed as scheduled since several things could be done simultaneously.
He added that RTM Langkawi previously rented a Tabung Haji-owned premises for about 30 years, with the rental contract renewed from time to time.
It is learnt that the new complex project, costing more than RM11.4 million, also involves the construction of a building with, among others, office administration space, guard room, guest room, ICT rooms, meeting rooms, store, surau, cafeteria and parking facilities.
The complex will also have broadcast engineering space like a broadcasting and radio recording studio, editing and ingest room, main control room, newsTV studio, multipurpose studio and a radio server room.
The project was considered ailing when the previous contractor, who was appointed in March 2021, failed to complete the building project on the 4.0465-hectare site and his services were terminated in 2023.
Meanwhile, Fahmi said the ministry's target after this will be to complete the RTM Complex project in Bintulu, Sarawak.
'Instructions have been given to the KSU (ministry secretary-general) to focus on completing the RTM project in Bintulu, together with the tearing down and reconstruction of several RTM staff quarters,' he said.

EU official says 175 mn euro Syria recovery package ‘clear message' of support
DAMASCUS: Visiting EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Suica said Thursday that a 175 million euro package for war-torn Syria was a 'clear message' of support for its reconstruction. Suica announced the package in Damascus Wednesday, saying it would focus on sectors including energy, education, health and agriculture, helping rebuild Syria's economy, support its institutions and promote human rights. 'I came here... with a clear message that we are here to assist and help Syria on its recovery,' Suica told AFP in an interview on Thursday. 'We want that reconstruction and recovery will be Syria-owned and Syria-led,' she said, on the first visit by an EU commissioner since a transitional government was unveiled in late March. 'We want to see Syria to be a regular, normal, democratic country in the future,' she added. Syria has been navigating a delicate transition since Islamist-led forces ousted longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December after nearly 14 years of civil war. The European Union announced last month it would lift economic sanctions on Syria in a bid to help its recovery. 'This is a pivotal moment -- a new chapter in EU-Syria relations,' Suica said on X, calling her meeting with interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa 'constructive'. Like Syria's neighbours, Western governments are keen to steer it onto the road to stability after the war triggered an exodus of millions of refugees. Refugee returns should be 'safe, voluntary and dignified', Suica said. The EU has not designated Syria as a safe country for returns 'because we don't want to push people to come here and then they don't have a home', she said. The EU last month sanctioned three Syrian militia groups and two of their leaders for serious human rights abuses over their alleged involvement in sectarian massacres in the costal heartland of the Alawite minority, to which Assad belongs, in March. 'We cannot pronounce one part of Syria safe and another not,' Suica said, noting that designating Syria a safe country needs 'unanimity among 27 European member states'. She said Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani would attend a ministerial meeting involving almost a dozen Mediterranean countries in Brussels on June 23. A statement released on Wednesday said that the European Commission was 'actively pursuing the integration of Syria into several key initiatives with its Mediterranean partner countries'. Amir Hamzah to follow up with Singapore's takeover of Woodlands land for checkpoint expansion, says Fahmi
PUTRAJAYA, June 5 — Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan has been tasked with taking further action following the announcement by Singaporean authorities regarding the acquisition of two plots of land owned by the Malaysian government in Woodlands. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the matter was discussed during today's Cabinet meeting following media reports yesterday about the actions of the republic's authorities. 'The Cabinet discussed this issue, and the Finance Minister II has been assigned to undertake several follow-up actions,' he said at a weekly press conference here today. Yesterday, the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) announced plans to acquire two plots of land owned by the Malaysian government for the redevelopment and expansion of the Woodlands Checkpoint (WCP). In a joint statement, the SLA and the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said the two plots, with a total area of about 0.79 hectares, are located near the central area of the redevelopment site and will be acquired by the Singapore government. According to the statement, both plots are overgrown and unused. The SLA and ICA said they will work closely with the Malaysian government throughout the acquisition process. In another development, Fahmi said the issue of drone mobility is being followed up by the Transport Ministry (MoT) to formulate clearer policies and guidelines on their use. He said the matter was raised by Transport Minister Anthony Loke during today's Cabinet meeting. 'Time is needed for MoT to review the amended policies and provide updates, particularly regarding the use of drones within certain limits and other aspects,' he said. Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, speaking at the 6th Series of the Malaysia Madani Scholars' Forum, said the government would review policies on low-altitude airspace usage and drone mobility during the Cabinet meeting (today). PM expresses appreciation, applauds successful organisation of LIMA'25, ASEAN Summits
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his heartfelt appreciation to all parties involved in the successful organisation of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (LIMA'25) and the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits last month. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, who is also MADANI Government spokesperson, said Anwar conveyed the appreciation message during today's Cabinet meeting, describing both events as historic milestones for Malaysia. 'The Prime Minister deeply values the efforts of all personnel and teams involved in organising LIMA'25 in Langkawi, as well as the ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Kuala Lumpur, at the end of May. 'Most heads of state and government leaders expressed their satisfaction with the warm hospitality and thorough preparations by Malaysia as the host,' Fahmi said at his weekly press conference. Fahmi said that the Prime Minister is currently considering appropriate forms of recognition to honour the dedication and commitment shown by all parties involved, with a formal announcement to be made in due course. 'Insya-Allah, several options are being considered, and we leave it to the Prime Minister to make the official announcement,' he said. LIMA'25 in Langkawi gathered 860 exhibitors from 24 countries, comprising 426 international and 434 local companies. Themed 'Today's Innovation, Tomorrow's Achievements', this year's edition was the largest maritime and aerospace exhibition in Southeast Asia since LIMA's inception in 1991. In Kuala Lumpur, apart from the 46th ASEAN Summit, two high-level meetings were also successfully held last month, namely the ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the first ASEAN-GCC-China Summit. The inaugural trilateral summit between ASEAN, GCC and China, which was also attended by Chinese Premier Li Qiang, not only marked a new chapter of strategic ties but also showcased Malaysia's commitment to enhancing regional economic cooperation. The GCC comprises Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Fahmi noted that the successful organisation of LIMA'25 and the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits forms a strong foundation for Malaysia's hosting of the 47th ASEAN Summit in October under its 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability'.
