Subaru Driver Leaves 800 Without Power After Hitting Electrical Tower

Yahoo10-02-2025

An unfortunately timed car accident in Bedford, New Hampshire left roughly 800 people in the cold and dark ahead of Sunday's Super Bowl, after an electric transmission tower came crashing to the Earth.
According to a press release issued by the Bedford Police Department, the incident took place on Saturday evening, when police responded to a single-car crash on Back River Road: a vehicle had exited the roadway and crashed into the equipment tower, with the car suffering what police described as "heavy front end damage."
A post from a local news Facebook page, Hillsborough Alert, shows the tower at night after the impact, with what appears to be a Subaru with severe front-end damage next to the structure and tire tracks in the snow leading off the road and up to the base of the transmission tower.
The driver, who police said was from Merrimack, New Hampshire, was given a citation for speeding, as well as for driving too fast for the conditions at hand. Luckily nobody was injured in the incident, but some 800 customers were immediately plunged into darkness. That's not exactly what you want to happen just ahead of any major sporting event, much less the Super Bowl.
Locals told local ABC affiliate WMUR 9 News that the accident produced quite the ruckus, with one neighbor likening the impact to loud fireworks.
The tower itself was owned by National Grid, but it managed to fall over into other lines owned by local provider Eversource, meaning customers from both companies were impacted. Thankfully, all of the Eversource customers had their power restored by Super Bowl evening, but some continued repair work from National Grid is expected to take place through Monday, as police said roughly 75 people were still without power on Sunday.
WMUR9 says that building a new tower will be necessary, and that it could cost as much as $100,000. Remember that next time you decide to push a little too hard in the slick stuff.

Subaru Is Teasing a New Performance Model. Could It Be an STI?

Will Subaru ever build another WRX STI? Will there ever be another hatchback? Those are questions Subie enthusiasts have been asking for years—since at least 2021, in fact, when the last STI left the US market. There have been hints of new STI and STI-adjacent models since then, but nothing concrete. Now, Subaru is teasing us with a high-performance variant of the WRX that may or may not be the new performance model we've been waiting for. 2024 Subaru WRX tS Photo by: Tim Stevens / Motor1 During a media session surrounding the Super Taikyu series at Fuji Speedway, Subaru Executive Managing Director and Chief Technical Officer, Tetsuro Fujinuki, confirmed a new performance model for this year's Japan Mobility Show. As reported by Japan's Car Watch , this could be a new WRX or STI, but the details are still unconfirmed. A lone teaser image previews the proposed performance model, showing a front-end clearly derived from the current WRX platform, but potentially with a longer roofline. Could it be a WRX hatchback or a new performance derivative of the Levorg? We'll have to wait to find out. Fujinuki said that this new model will make "good use of our current technological assets," and that, "we would like to create an even more cutting-edge car" down the line. The CTO reiterated that the company will provide even more details surrounding its future performance plans when the Japan Mobility Show opens its doors in October. For now, buyers in the US will have to make do with the current WRX and WRX tS sedans, which make up to 271 horsepower at their most potent. There have been rumors of all-electric iterations of Subaru's STI performance models, but given the recent changing landscape, it's unclear if Subaru will stick to that plan. 42 Source: Tim Stevens / Motor1 The Latest From Subaru The Subaru WRX STI Is Back, But Only With a CVT The 2025 Subaru WRX tS Is Expensive Get the best news, reviews, columns, and more delivered straight to your inbox, daily. back Sign up For more information, read our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use .
