RM2 billion flood mitigation project in Kuching under 13MP
The project, divided into three main packages, includes constructing a canal, a bridge, and a barrage along Sungai Salak.
Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, stated that the tender process will begin this year, with construction expected to start in 2026.
'This RTB will channel excess water through Sungai Salak. Similar to Sungai Sarawak, a barrage will be installed to prevent seawater intrusion and allow better water control during high tides,' he explained after the opening of the He Medical Clinic.
The Kuching RTB is part of a nationwide effort under the 13MP (2026–2030) to improve flood resilience and public infrastructure.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently announced a RM20 billion allocation for 103 RTB projects across Malaysia.
Key locations include Sungai Langat and Sungai Buloh in Selangor, Sungai Golok in Kelantan, and Sungai Johor Basin in Johor. - Bernama

KUCHING: The recently tabled 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) places comprehensive emphasis on national infrastructure development, including in Sarawak. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the Works Ministry (KKR) carries a major responsibility in implementing infrastructure development, as without good roads, it would be difficult to deliver other services such as education, healthcare and safety. 'Roads are like the lifeblood of the body. Without them, development is hard to reach rural areas. For example, although school projects fall under the Ministry of Education, their implementation and monitoring are the responsibility of the Public Works Department (JKR). 'This is the kind of inter-agency cooperation that must continue for the benefit of the people,' he told a press conference after the handover ceremony of the completed Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Rantau Panjang here today. Nanta, who is also Kapit MP, said the project in the Sungai Batang Rajang area — involving the construction of a main road from Nanga Serau to Nanga Seranau and included under the 13MP — is still in its preliminary stages, and no implementation date has been set yet. 'The road is expected to span around 70 kilometres and benefit thousands of residents, including villages, longhouses, schools and clinics,' he said. As for the Sarawak Trans Borneo Highway project, Nanta said it comprises three phases starting from Tudan to Kuala Baram in the Miri division near the Malaysia-Brunei border checkpoint, ending in the Limbang division without entering Brunei. 'This project is a continuation of the Pan Borneo Highway and will have a major impact, especially on the economic development and connectivity of areas like Limbang, which is a key town in northern Sarawak,' he said. Earlier in his speech, Nanta said JKR would continue monitoring all aspects of post-handover maintenance to ensure the project functions properly and meets the required specifications. 'The successful completion and timely handover of two more projects today proves that the MADANI Government's aspirations are not just rhetoric but are realised through quality projects that are completed on schedule and bring added value to the community,' he said. - Bernama

He said efforts are underway to bring both states in line with Johor — currently the top pineapple-producing state in Peninsular Malaysia — through a large-scale commercial initiative. 'In Sabah, a pilot project with the Sabah Land Development Board (SLDB) will begin on a 300-hectare site in Sinua, Sook,' he said, adding that other potential areas include Kota Marudu, Beaufort and several locations along the main road alignment. 'This is just the beginning. There is huge potential to expand, and we've identified thousands of hectares that can be developed,' he said. The minister also highlighted that the initiative aims to tap not only the domestic market but also the export market, which would boost the added value of agricultural products from both Sabah and Sarawak. Johor to study Singapore's hawker centre model
JOHOR BAHRU: The Johor government will study the management model of wet markets and hawker centres at Geylang Serai Market & Food Centre managed by Singapore's National Environment Agency (NEA) with a view to be adapted in the state. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the delegation's visit to the centre provided Johor with an opportunity to closely examine the hawker centre management model that is organised, clean and inclusive. He said the two-storey complex, which houses 302 wet market lots and 63 halal food stalls, serves as an important community centre and a symbol of the cultural heritage of the Malay community in Singapore. 'Among the interesting aspects are controlled rental rates to ensure reasonable food prices to ensure affordable food prices for consumers. 'It is also equipped with a strict hygiene grading system, mandatory training for food operators, as well as enforcement through technology such as closed-circuit television (CCTV), an e-fine system and the use of smart sensors (IoT) for sanitation and crowd monitoring. 'In addition, NEA also manages this centre through a social enterprise model, which is a non-profit operator focused on empowering small traders and maintaining social balance,' he said in a post uploaded on his Facebook page. In this regard, Onn Hafiz said the approach by NEA is considered highly relevant to be studied and adapted in Johor, especially in efforts to transform the management of public markets and hawker centres to be more efficient, sustainable and supportive of the people's economy, especially micro-traders, B40 and small business owners. He stressed that the state government would continue to be committed to studying and translating such best practices into local policies.
