Major motorway closed in both directions over ‘police-led incident' as drivers facing hour-long delays

DRIVERS have been warned of travel chaos as bumper-to-bumper traffic builds on a major motorway.
A stretch of M40 has been closed down in both directions after a "police-led incident".

The cordon is in place between J6 at Chinnor and J5 at Stokenchurch.
Thames Valley Police remain on scene and are leading the response to the closure.
National Highways Traffic Officers are also helping with traffic management.
Motorists have been warned of hour-long queues due to the disruption.
National Highways said: "The M40 remains closed in both directions between J6 (Chinnor) and J5 (Stokenchurch) due to a police-led incident.
"Delays are approaching 60 minutes northbound & 70 minutes southbound in the area."
Northbound traffic is being diverted via the Hollow Diamond diversion symbol.
Drivers are being directed to exit the M40 at J5 and take the A40 northbound.
Then continue to the B4009 and turn left onto the B4009 then re-join the M40 at J6.
Meanwhile, southbound traffic is being diverted via the Hollow Circle diversion symbol.
Motorists should exit the M40 at J6 and follow the B4009.
Then turn right onto the A40 and continue until you re-join the M6 at J5.

The crash happened between Junction 19, Knutsford, and Junction 18 at Holmes Chapel. National Highways say a queue of more than six miles has formed through the area. A spokesperson for the agency said: "One lane is closed on the M6 southbound between J19 Tabley and J18 Holmes Chapel due to a collision. "Delays in excess of one hour, approx. 6.5 miles of congestion." Traffic has also been spreading to nearby A-roads with queues forming on the A50 through Knutsford as drivers try to avoid the long M6 tailbacks. Delays have also been reported on the A556 and A559 near Northwich. Further details about the nature of the collision are yet to be confirmed by the authorities.

A3 to close between the Wisley interchange and Painshill exit

A section of a main road in Surrey is set to be closed in both directions as a £317m junction upgrade A3 northbound will be closed from the M25 Junction 10 (Wisley interchange) to the Painshill exit from 21:00 BST on Friday until 09:00 on Saturday morning. National Highways says the closures are to facilitate "junction improvement works".A diversion is in place at Ockham which leads on to the A3 northbound. Regular temporary closures have been taking place as part of a wider project to improve Junction 10, which is the busiest stretch of the M25. The National Highways project, which is due for completion next spring, will see an additional lane added to the A3 and improvements made to the A245 Seven Hills junction and Painshill Roundabout at Cobham.
