China pitches digital yuan to challenge dollar-led global currency system
China has stepped up its efforts to reshape the global monetary order by promoting the renminbi as part of a "multi-currency system" that reduces the dominance of the US dollar.
At the Lujiazui Forum in Shanghai this week, People's Bank of China Governor Pan Gongsheng said the international system is shifting towards a structure where several sovereign currencies coexist and counterbalance each other. Pan said global overreliance on a single currency creates systemic risks and compromises the fiscal stability of one country. He pointed to the renminbi's growing role, citing its position as the world's second-largest currency in trade finance and third-largest in global payments.
The remarks come amid continued US-China tensions, despite a tentative pause on Trump-era tariffs. Pan warned that dominant currencies are often used as political tools, especially for sanctions, raising global interest in alternatives.
Infrastructure to support yuan-based trade
To support its strategy, China is expanding the infrastructure around renminbi-based transactions.
Beijing has increasingly settled its trade—particularly with nations such as Russia and Iran—in renminbi. These deals are often processed through smaller Chinese banks with limited exposure to US financial sanctions, allowing trade to continue without the associated dollar risks.
While the dollar remains the leading global currency by a wide margin, China's approach targets incremental adoption in developing economies. The strategy emphasises 'regionalising' the renminbi rather than full globalisation along Western lines.
Barriers to renminbi globalisation
Nonetheless, significant challenges remain. China's strict capital controls continue to limit the renminbi's utility in global finance, and its persistent trade surplus means most renminbi sent abroad quickly return in exchange for Chinese goods or to repay loans.
To address these limitations, the central bank is also looking to expand the Qualified Domestic Institutional Investor (QDII) scheme, enabling more onshore investors to access foreign assets. Regulators say the expansion aims to meet rising domestic demand for overseas investment opportunities.
Financial cooperation and strategic agreements
Meanwhile, Hong Kong and Shanghai authorities signed an agreement to enhance cross-border financial cooperation, especially in the management of renminbi-denominated assets. Pan also cited renewed interest in leveraging the International Monetary Fund's Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) to reduce dependence on any single national currency.
The initiative aligns with similar sentiments from European leaders. European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde recently remarked that the dollar's global dominance was 'no longer certain', suggesting an opening for the euro to grow in global finance.
By expanding renminbi-related infrastructure and fostering stronger financial partnerships, China is laying the foundation for a long-term shift in global trade and finance—one where no single currency holds a disproportionate sway.

DLF's Privana North in Gurugram sees strong NRI demand, with US-based buyers accounting for 30% of overseas sales
DLF announced on June 18 that its newly launched luxury housing project, Privana North in Gurugram, has generated over ₹11,000 crore in sales within a week. The company attributed the strong response to robust housing demand, particularly from NRIs in countries such as the US, UK, GCC nations, and Singapore. Canada, Indonesia, Australia, and Kuwait emerged as new markets. On the domestic front, DLF witnessed strong interest from buyers across a wide range of cities, including Jaipur, Jalandhar, Agra, Ludhiana, Muktsar, Amritsar, Mumbai, Kolkata, Panipat, Chennai, Ambala, Bengaluru, Karnal, Udaipur among others, in addition to Gurugram, Delhi, and Noida. In a regulatory filing on June 18, DLF announced "sell out of its latest luxury offering, DLF Privana North, valued at approximately ₹11,000 crore, a historic milestone achieved within just one week." 'We've seen interest from buyers across India and around the world,' said Aakash Ohri, Joint Managing Director and Chief Business Officer, DLF Home Developers Ltd, in a conversation with HT Digital. 'Over the years, we've built a strong DLF diaspora. For Privana North, we've received strong interest from the US, UK, GCC countries, and Singapore, with Canada, Australia, Jakarta, and Kuwait emerging as new markets. Nearly 30% of overseas sales for the project have come from US-based Indians,' he said. The company unveiled the name and first look of DLF Privana North at New York City's iconic Times Square a few days ago. 'Southeast Asia contributed about 15% of our NRI business, particularly from countries like Singapore, Hong Kong, and Jakarta,' Ohri said. Speaking about the response to Privana North from NRIs, he said, 'Given the current geopolitical uncertainties, the Indian diaspora is increasingly looking for high-quality homes in India, properties that match the standards and lifestyle they're accustomed to abroad.' The real estate major has attracted domestic buyers from nearly 22 cities across India for its Privana North project in Gurugram, double the outreach compared to the launch of Privana South and West last year, which saw interest from 11 cities. 'We've significantly expanded our outreach across the country,' said Ohri. 'What's interesting is how Gurugram is evolving, not just as a residential destination but also as a preferred market for real estate investors. While our focus remains on end users, with 85% of buyers being actual homebuyers and 15% investors, the investor interest is also growing,' he said. 'Over 10% of domestic sales have come from non-metro markets. In total, buyers from 22 cities across India have invested in the project,' Ohri said. Beyond Gurugram, Delhi, and Noida, DLF has received bookings from buyers in Jaipur, Jalandhar, Agra, Ludhiana, Muktsar, Amritsar, Mumbai, Kolkata, Panipat, Chennai, Ambala, Bengaluru, Karnal, Udaipur among others, he said. 'Aspirational homebuyers from these cities are increasingly shifting focus from Delhi to Gurugram,' said Ohri. 'Many have children studying or working here, and their businesses often bring them to Delhi. Instead of staying in hotels during frequent visits, four to five times a month, they prefer owning a home. These aren't just investors, but end users or their family members actively occupying the units.' Also Read: DLF secures RERA approval for Privana North luxury project in Gurugram He noted that Gurugram has evolved into a cosmopolitan hub, welcoming people from across the country. 'It's become a melting pot,' Ohri said. He also pointed to a post-COVID shift in buyer behaviour. 'Many of our customers - entrepreneurs, business leaders, CXOs, capital market participants- have reassessed their portfolios. After being overexposed to equity markets, they are now prioritising stable, high-quality residential assets,' he said. Located in Sectors 76 and 77 of Gurugram, DLF's Privana North luxury apartments are part of the 116-acre integrated township, DLF Privana. The project spans 17.7 acres and comprises six premium towers rising to stilt+50 storeys, DLF's tallest residential buildings to date. It offers 1,152 four-bedroom residences and 12 penthouses. The 4 BHK apartments measure a carpet area of around 207 square meters (2236 square feet) and penthouses extend up to around 450 square meters of carpet area (4847 square feet). 'While the average price of apartments is around ₹9.5 crore, penthouses cost ₹25 crore," Ohri added.

Sattva Group, Blackstone sponsored REIT raises ₹1,400 cr in pre-IPO round
New Delhi, Jun 18 (PTI) Knowledge Realty Trust, sponsored by real estate company Sattva Group and Blackstone, has raised ₹1,400 crore from investors ahead of its maiden REIT public issue. In early March, Knowledge Realty Trust (KRT) filed the Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) with SEBI to launch an Initial Public Offering (IPO) for raising ₹6,200 crore and list the REIT on stock exchanges. This is part of its strategy to monetise its 30 prime office assets across major cities. According to sources, the KRT has raised ₹1,400 crore in a pre-IPO round from family offices and high net worth individuals. KRT will be the largest REIT in India in terms of Net Operating Income (NOI) and Gross Asset Value, which is estimated at around ₹60,000 crore. At present, there are four listed REITs in India -- Brookfield India Real Estate Trust, Embassy Office Parks REIT, Mindspace Business Parks REIT, and Nexus Select Trust. Apart from Nexus Select Trust, the other three REITs are backed by rent-yielding office assets. Nexus owns a large portfolio of retail real estate spaces. This will be the fifth public listing of Blackstone India Real Estate business, including three listed REITs and one of Ventive Hospitality. KRT's total portfolio is 48 million sq ft (37 million square feet completed) across 30 Grade A office assets across six major cities, making it India's most geographically diverse Office REIT. Of the total portfolio, 90 per cent is leased with marquee tenants - 76 per cent with MNCs and 45 per cent with GCCs (Global Capability Centres). Sattva Developers has so far constructed 74 million square feet across seven Indian cities in commercial, residential, co-living, co-working, hospitality, and data centre sectors. An additional 75 million square feet is in planning and implementation. Blackstone, one of the leading global investment firms, has a huge exposure in the Indian real estate market. The two sponsors have decided to adopt brand brand-neutral strategy to grow the KRT portfolio inorganically through third-party acquisitions. The existing four REITs have a combined portfolio of over 126 million square feet of Grade A office and retail space across the country. Since their inception, these REITs have collectively distributed over ₹21,000 crore to unitholders. According to Vestian's latest report, nearly 60 per cent of pan-India office stock is REIT-worthy across the top seven cities.
