Community generosity shines for Jords' Big Freeze

Shirvo takes the icy plunge at Big Freeze 11
Community generosity outshone even the return of dual Brownlow medallist Nat Fyfe in Claremont on Saturday as nearly $100,000 was raised for motor neurone disease during Jordan's DIY Big Freeze.
Sporting legends united ahead of the Tigers' WAFL clash with Peel Thunder, braving torrential downpours before hitting the ice water to support local father Jordan Early.
Mr Early was diagnosed with MND just five months ago, but the disease has already stolen his strength and part of his speech.
'I got weaker, I started to struggle with my speech, not as bad as it is now, but those were the first signs,' he said. Olympian Jayde Taylor goes down the slide. Credit: Ross Swanborough / The West Australian
'It's a battle every day, because it's degenerative, things are changing all the time. So you might lose one function, but something else shows up.'

Pearce, a seasoned slider after being a part of the inaugural Big Freeze in Melbourne in support of AFL champion Neale Daniher, was one of the first to sign on to support the Early family.
'Sebby, their eldest son, goes to school with my twins, and it's an amazing community. To see Jo and Jords with everything they're going through with their three kids is pretty eye-opening, and I want to do everything I can to support them,' Pearce said ahead of the event. 'To watch a family like theirs go through it is terrible, but to see their strength and courage as they do and to think about everything they're battling as a family with three young kids (is inspiring).
'To see their generosity and their spirit to give what they can and to inspire people to do what they can to ensure future families don't go through what they are is so humbling.' Freddie Davies 5yo enjoying the puddles at Claremont Oval. Credit: Jackson Flindell / The West Australian
The big-name sliders didn't end with Pearce, as the initiative raised about $93,000.

West Coast have been a staunch supporter of fundraising for MND, given Daniher's connection to the club as well as the fact that he was working there when he was diagnosed.

The end of the sliding didn't deter the strong crowd from sticking around as Fremantle champion Fyfe returned from a calf injury with Peel.

He was also a favourite among the fans, taking time to sign footballs on his way off the water-logged ground at half-time before taking photos and having a brief chat with fans post-game, his documentary crew never far away.

West Coast Eagles bring back Matt Flynn and Sandy Brock as Adelaide rest veteran star

West Coast have recalled ruckman Matt Flynn after just one game in the reserves as ladder-leaders Adelaide have once again rested veteran Taylor Walker. The Eagles are to make at least three changes for their clash at Optus Stadium on Sunday, with Flynn, midfielder Jack Graham and defender Sandy Brock named in the starting 18 for the clash against the Crows. Defender Harry Edwards will miss with a foot injury, while exciting young Eagle Tyrell Dewar has been omitted after playing 15 games this season. Graham returns for his first game after being suspended for four games for a homophobic slur last month, having been named on the wing. Brock is set to once again take on Crows forward Darcy Fogarty who he kept to one goal in their previous encounter this year. Out-of-contract speedster Jack Petruccelle and forward Jack Williams have been named on an extended bench alongside Tyler Brockman, Ryan Maric, Tom Gross, Clay Hall, Bailey Williams and Hamish Davis. Flynn was dropped after the Eagles' derby defeat, missing the match-up against Melbourne captain and seven-time All-Australian Max Gawn at the weekend. The 27-year-old responded with 24 disposals, 30 hit-outs and five clearances for the Eagles' WAFL side in their 69-point defeat to East Perth at Sullivan Logistics Stadium on Saturday. Williams' selection comes despite the 21-year-old not kicking a goal from a total of 13 touches in his past two WAFL games. Dewar got the axe after he was subbed out of the 83-point loss to the Demons with only five touches. The Crows will leave 35-year-old Walker at home, with the former captain having missed their round 11 encounter. He is now set to play his 300th game in the Crows' first final. Brayden Cook and Brodie Smith have both been dropped with veteran Rory Laird as well as Chris Burgess, Harry Schoenberg, James Borlase, Lachlan Murphy and Luke Pedlar all named as potential inclusions. Fremantle Dockers captain Alex Pearce and veteran star Nat Fyfe return to take on Port Adelaide

Fremantle club great Nat Fyfe will join returning skipper Alex Pearce in the side for the Dockers' crucial clash with Port Adelaide on Saturday night. Both the current skipper and the champion former captain have been named to take on the Power. They are the only two changes for the Dockers, with midfielder Corey Wagner to miss another week with his ankle injury. Pearce — who said on Thursday he was excited to return and was primed for a run at the finals — has replaced backman Oscar McDonald in Justin Longmuir's team. Fyfe is the like-for-like replacement for star midfielder Hayden Young, who lasted just 20 minutes against Carlton on Sunday before he was substituted out with a groin injury. The two-time Brownlow medallist played 60 minutes and starred in Peel Thunder's dour wet-weather loss to Claremont last week, after which Longmuir described him as the best player on the ground. The 33-year-old is out of contract at the end of this season. Pearce has played just once — the round 17 defeat to Sydney — since the Dockers beat Port Adelaide back in round 11, while Fyfe's season has been plagued by injury and he hurt his calf while warming up at half-time of the round 16 win over St Kilda. Besieged Port Adelaide have made a suite of changes for the clash after back-to-back heavy defeats. Captain Connor Rozee is back after missing the 88-point defeat to Geelong on Sunday with illness. He is joined in the side by Jack Lukosius — who is back from injury — as well as recalled forward Willie Rioli and first-year player Christian Moraes. Jase Burgoyne is injured, but Jack Whitlock, Hugh Jackson and Dylan Williams have all been dropped. Whitlock lasted just one game after debuting against the Cats. Speaking as he flew early to Adelaide on Thursday, Pearce said the club's cautious approach with his return meant he was feeling confident in his body. 'I am excited to be back,' Pearce said. 'We've taken plenty of time, and the reason why I've done that is so I can feel comfortable. 'We've taken extra time to alleviate a lot of that risk and I feel really confident. 'The good thing is the team has been playing well and that's made me even more keen to get back and join what the group have been building without me.' Pearce flagged Brennan Cox could be the man to tackle star Port Adelaide goal-kicker Mitch Georgiades after a brilliant run of form where he has led the Dockers' backline. 'Me or Coxy, one of the two. We always share the load,' Pearce said when asked about Georgiades. Asked if he was in a spot to finish the season strongly, Pearce said: 'I think so, absolutely. That's the plan'. Fremantle have won 10 of their past 11 matches and will stay in the mix for a top-four spot if they beat the Power at the weekend. The Dockers have not beaten Port at Adelaide Oval in seven attempts since the club moved to the redeveloped ground.
