Delhi Weather: Heavy rain lashes national capital, waterlogging reported – check IMD's forecast

Mint2 days ago
Heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Delhi on Tuesday, providing much-needed relief from the extreme heat. However, many areas experienced problems of waterlogging and traffic congestion.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more rain throughout the day, forecasting a "generally cloudy sky with moderate rain." The weather agency has also predicted more showers for tomorrow.
Waterlogging was reported in parts of south and southwest Delhi after fresh rainfall, causing slow-moving traffic and flooded streets, commuters said.
Visuals from the Sangam Vihar area showed vehicles plying on flooded streets. A bike also got stuck in a waterlogged area, with the rider trying to move his vehicle. Schoolchildren were seen slowly crossing the waterlogged street, which made movement difficult for them.
Visuals also emerged showing rainwater flowing down the stairs of the Parliament building, while vehicles moved past in the background. Meanwhile, due to the downpour, the Opposition's planned protest at the Makar Dwar of the Parliament building under the banner of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign was postponed. Officials said the demonstration would now be held after the House is adjourned for the day.
The weather department has stated that the temperature in Delhi will vary between 36 degrees Celsius and 23 degrees Celsius over the next seven days, until July 28.
According to the IMD, the city will experience generally cloudy skies with very light to light or moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms or lightning, over the next seven days.

Rain gains strength, orange alert for six districts in Kerala on Friday

After a brief lull, rain accompanied by wind is picking up strength over Kerala, influenced by the weather systems in the Bay of Bengal. Heavy rainfall was reported in many places in Kerala on Wednesday and Thursday. Cheruthoni and Udumbannoor in Idukki recorded the highest rainfall of 10 cm during the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Thursday, followed by Peerumade and Udumbannoor in Idukki and Laha in Pathanamthitta (9 cm each). Kannur, Konni and Ranni in Pathanamthitta, Haripad and Mancompu in Alappuzha, and Bayar in Kasargod recorded 8 cm each of rain during this period. Wind also gained strength, with gusty wind with speeds above 20 knots prevailing at many places. The highest speed of wind was noticed in Idukki with 57 kmph during the same period, followed by Ernakulam (54 kmph), Thiruvananthapuram (48 kmph), Thrissur (44 kmph), Kottayam (43 kmph), and Pathanamthitta (43 kmph). The rainfall and wind will be strengthened further from Friday as the remnant of the tropical cyclone Wipha that emerged over the North Bay of Bengal took the shape of a low pressure over the same region on Thursday, strengthening the flow of westerly wind from the Arabian Sea. The system will intensify further, becoming a well-marked low pressure area in 24 hours. Further, an off-shore trough now runs at sea level along the Maharashtra-Kerala coasts. This will cause some intense spells across the core monsoon region on the west coast of the country, including coastal Karnataka, parts of Kerala, and interior Karnataka. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for six districts—Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, and Ernakulam—on Friday, where very heavy rainfall is likely, while the rest of the State was put on yellow alert warning of isolated heavy rain. On Saturday, central Kerala will witness very heavy spell and five districts in the region have been put on orange alert.
