Hockey Legend's Home To Be Destroyed In Varanasi 'Beautification' Drive
Mohammad Shahid's ancestral home in Varanasi is being demolished for road-widening. Shahid, an Olympic gold medalist, was born there in 1960. His family wants a memorial.
Hockey legend and Olympics winner Mohammad Shahid's century-old ancestral home is being demolished in Varanasi under a road-widening and beautification drive. According to The Times of India, the drive is part of a 9.3 km-long four-lane project, which has already claimed around 600 structures.
The house was built in 1920. Shahid was born there on April 14, 1960, and was brought up to be one of India's best Hockey players. He was a key member of the team that won Gold at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, the last time that the country won the prize in its national sport.
He was honoured with the Arjuna Award in 1980–81 and the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award in India, in 1986. Shahid died in July 2016 at the age of 56 after battling liver disease. The family has come to terms with the demolition and has been compensated for it, too, but his widow, Parveen, and son, Kaif, said they want the government to build a memorial in Shahid's honor.
'This house has been home to four generations. Even after we shifted in 2015, Shahid would visit daily. It inspired many young hockey players who dreamt of becoming Olympians," Parveen said in the report. 'We support the development work, but after this historic house is gone, a memorial or a square should be established in his name."
Kaif said, 'Our ancestral house will be demolished in a couple of days. All we want is for the government should create a memorial in his name."
KK Singh, the executive engineer, of the Public Works Department in the holy city said the suggestion is being considered. 'This is a great suggestion. People should know about Kashi and the country's pride. I will discuss this with the district magistrate and the family," he said.
Shahid was also part of the teams that won the silver medal in the 1982 Delhi Asian Games and the bronze in the 1986 Seoul Asian Games.

US Open Mixed Doubles Winning Team To Pocket USD 1 Million; Alcaraz-Raducanu Vs No. 1 Seeds In 1st Round
Last Updated: Jannik Sinner will partner with Katerina Siniakova in the U.S. Open mixed doubles while Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz face the No. 1-seeded team in the first round. Jannik Sinner has a new partner for the U.S. Open mixed doubles tournament, where Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz will face the No. 1-seeded team in the first round. The rest of the 16-team field was finalised on Sunday, and the draw took place before the two-day event that starts Tuesday and awards $1 million to the winning team. Top-ranked Sinner will now compete with 10-time women's doubles major champion Katerina Siniakova. He was initially scheduled to team up with Emma Navarro, who withdrew to participate in the women's tournament in Monterrey, Mexico, next week. Other teams added to the event on Sunday include two-time U.S. Open women's champion Naomi Osaka and Gael Monfils, Karolina Muchova and Andrey Rublev, and Caty McNally and Lorenzo Musetti. Musetti was slated to play with fellow Italian Jasmine Paolini, but she withdrew as she is playing Iga Swiatek in the Cincinnati final on Monday. Swiatek remains in the field with her partner Casper Ruud. Sinner and second-ranked Alcaraz are competing against each other in the men's final and will quickly transition to their doubles openers in New York. Alcaraz and Raducanu, both former U.S. Open singles champions, will face the team of Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper, who secured the No. 1 seed based on the lowest combined singles rankings. Sinner and Siniakova, who received one of the eight wild cards, will open against the team of Alexander Zverev and Belinda Bencic. Other first-round matchups include: Olga Danilovic and Novak Djokovic vs. Mirra Andreeva and Daniil Medvedev; No. 3 Swiatek and Ruud vs. Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe; Osaka and Monfils vs. McNally and Musetti; Taylor Townsend and Ben Shelton vs. No. 4 Amanda Anisimova and Holger Rune; Venus Williams and Reilly Opelka vs. Muchova and Rublev; and No. 2 Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz vs. Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori. Errani and Vavassori, the defending U.S. Open champions, are the only traditional doubles team in the field. The first and second rounds will be played on Tuesday starting at 11 a.m., with the semifinals and final on Wednesday night. 'Crimea Already Lost': Zelenskyy Signals No More Land Swaps With Russia Ahead Of Trump Meeting
Last Updated: Zelenskyy, who arrived in the US to meet Trump, said Ukraine had already lost Crimea and parts of Donbas, which he accused Putin of using as a 'springboard' for new attacks. Ahead of his White House meeting with US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signalled that Kyiv will not agree to further land swaps with Russia as part of any peace deal. Zelenskyy, who arrived in Washington days after the Alaska talks, said Ukraine had already lost Crimea and parts of Donbas, which he accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of using as a 'springboard" for renewed attacks. 'We all share a strong desire to end this war quickly and reliably. And peace must be lasting. Not like it was years ago, when Ukraine was forced to give up Crimea and part of our East—part of Donbas—and Putin simply used it as a springboard for a new attack," he said. Zelenskyy said that the security guarantees offered to Ukraine in 1994 had failed, adding that Crimea should not have been ceded at the time, just as Ukrainians did not surrender Kyiv, Odesa or Kharkiv after 2022 conflict broke out with Russia. view comments First Published: August 18, 2025, 08:57 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
