George Lowe, the voice behind Space Ghost on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, dies at 67

Independent07-03-2025
George Lowe, the voice behind the irreverent animated superhero on Adult Swim's 'Space Ghost Coast to Coast,' has died. He was 67.
He died Sunday in Lakeland, Florida, two of his business representatives said. Lowe had been struggling to recover from elective heart surgery in November, his family said in a statement. 'Over the past few months, his family and friends have been by his side in support and care for him,' the statement said.
Lowe's booming voice and off-the-wall humor turned 'Space Ghost Coast to Coast' into a cult classic among young adults and teens.
The show debuted in 1994 and aired for more than a decade on Cartoon Network as part of its Adult Swim nighttime programming block. It was Cartoon Network's first original production and set the foundation for several other original series including 'The Powerpuff Girls,' 'Courage the Cowardly Dog' and 'Johnny Bravo.'
On 'Space Ghost Coast to Coast,' Lowe played the role of cartoon superhero Space Ghost, who hosted a talk show and interviewed real celebrities. While the interviews with the likes of William Shatner, Conan O'Brien and Donny Osmond were pre-recorded, Lowe would later add wacky and rambling digressions, such as asking guests if they were getting enough oxygen.
'Insanity became en vogue, thanks to us,' Lowe told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 2004.
Adult Swim President Michael Ouweleen said the show proved the network could find success with its own productions.
'You all knew him as Space Ghost (and all his other characters), but we knew him as himself, a true character in his own right, one that left an indelible mark on all of us at Adult Swim,' he said.
The show's producers would begin recording Lowe as soon as he stepped into the booth, Ouweleen said, creating some of the best material 'when he didn't realize he was being recorded.'
Lowe voiced several other characters on Adult Swim shows, including 'Robot Chicken,' 'Aqua Teen Hunger Force' and 'The Brak Show.'
Until this past year, he continued to make regular appearances at comic book and sci-fi conventions.
Lowe, who was born in Dunedin, Florida, began his career as a disc jockey and television personality in Florida and Georgia. He continued to do voice work for radio stations after Adult Swim.
He was an avid folk and pop art collector and a self-taught artist whose intricate pen and ink drawings were displayed in several museums, including The High Museum of Art in Atlanta where his work is part of its permanent collection.
There were no details available on his survivors. His family said there will be a private service.

Netflix's 'vulgar' film from creator of your favourite childhood cartoons with Wednesday star

It's very different from his shows you watched growing up with some unrecognisable stars Netflix's new 'vulgar' film comes from the creator of your favourite childhood cartoons and features unrecognisable Wednesday star. ‌ Available exclusively on the streaming platform from today (August 13), Fixed boasts an all-star cast, but fans may struggle to identify the famous faces due to their transformed appearances. ‌ This is because the latest release is an animated film, unlike anything you've likely seen before, with a host of familiar voices for viewers to enjoy. ‌ The art style will resonate with those who grew up watching Cartoon Network, as the film is the brainchild of visionary writer and director Genndy Tartakovsky. Regarded by many as a legend in the animation industry, Tartakovsky is also the creator of childhood favourites such as Dexter's Laboratory, Samurai Jack and more adult oriented Primal, reports the Mirror. ‌ He has also written for The Powerpuff Girls and Star Wars: Clone Wars series and is the driving force behind all the Hotel Transylvania films, even lending his voice to the character Blobby since the third instalment in 2018. Fixed tells the tale of Bull, an average, good-natured dog who discovers he's going to be neutered in the morning. As the reality of this life-changing event sinks in, Bull decides he needs one last adventure with his pack of best friends, given these are the final 24 hours with his balls. What could possibly go wrong? The impressive voice cast is led by Pitch Perfect and The Righteous Gemstones star Adam Devine, who voices Bull. He is joined by Idris Elba, voicing Rocco, and Agatha All Along actress Kathryn Hahn as Honey. ‌ Saturday Night Live veteran Bobby Moynihan voices Lucky whilst Fred Armisen, known for portraying Uncle Fester in Netflix's Wednesday series, takes on the role of Fetch. For those still wondering who that is, he's the spectacle-wearing canine. The film has endured a lengthy journey to reach audiences. Warner Bros initially axed it as part of cost-cutting initiatives and Netflix declined it in 2024. Twelve months on and it's now available for streaming. When questioned about what would have happened if the movie had never seen the light of day, star Devine quipped: "I would burn Hollywood to the ground. I would have retired, I would have moved back to Omaha, Nebraska and become a real estate agent. That was my back-up plan, but I do think I would have been a great real estate agent." ‌ Now the picture has finally arrived, critics are beginning to share their verdicts online. Whilst initial responses were largely favourable, professional reviews have proved predominantly lukewarm. Currently, it maintains a 68% score on Rotten Tomatoes. There's acclaim for the vocal performances and animation approach but many are ultimately deterred by the film's explicit content. One reviewer stated: "Fitfully funny and laudable for its veneration of classic animation styles. But Genndy Tartakovsky's latest film mostly corners the market (and marks the corner) on every obvious punchline about neutered dogs and too rarely reaches for laughs beyond them." ‌ Another viewer commented: "What is the Purpose of this film? Sure it has a funny concept... but after the first 20 minutes it gets old sadly... I just wanted more from this. Surely an Homage to old school animation but its missing the charm." However, there are those who advocate giving it a watch, if only to confirm its existence. One review read: "What Tartakovsky delivers with the shackles off is enough of a reason to support this absurdly vulgar animated film. Netflix has saved a movie that needs to be seen to be believed." Another individual remarked: "It's clear that Fixed is, very much, a movie that is not for everyone. But those who do get on its particular wavelength will be rewarded by one of the most original and surprising animated features of the past few years."

Susan Olsen, famed for her role in The Brady Bunch, was seen clutching her car keys as she exited her white SUV. The 63-year-old juggled a bunch of papers under her left arm as she made her way around town. Her very different look to her Brady Bunch role - which saw her playing youngest Brady child Cindy - came after her former co-star Maureen McCormick also left fans doing a double take with her look. Susan and Maureen, as well as Mike Lookinland, Eve Plumb, Christopher Knight and Barry Williams starred as the siblings in the US sitcom from 1969 to 1974 and then reunited for the reboot. Santa Monica born Susan - who was aged seven when she was cast in her plum TV role - was often seen on-screen with her blonde locks tied into to pig tails for her five years on the series. SUSAN'S TAKE Susan has previously spoken out about her tendency to play "dull" roles in her career. She previously said: "That's just how my career was and it was something I had to accept." The Brady Bunch was a massive hit for five years from 1969 She also opened up to the Real Brady Bros podcast about a scary incident on set. It saw the child star hit with a piece of equipment while she was having her make-up done prior to the show's pilot episode. She said of the aftermath: "My eyes were black. "I mean, I had two black eyes. My nose was swollen. My face was swollen." She added: "The saddest news is that we didn't sue Paramount, because I would have made more off of that than the show.' Meanwhile, her former Brady Bunch co-star Maureen has opened up on the prospect of a series reboot. Maureen recently told People: "It's so hard to do a reboot or a remake of something. "So I feel very protective of it in a way. It has such great memories for so many people, but it would just have to absolutely knock my socks off for me to want to do anything with it. I would know in my heart. "But it was such an incredible show to be a part of, and my best memories of the show are the people, the crew, and their families." OTHER PROJECTS Susan also appeared on Space Ghost Coast To Coast, Blending Christmas, The Young And The Restless and Gimmie My Reality Show to name a few. Film-wise, she featured in 2009 flick Zombo and in 2015, in Mamam Claus, Deck The Halls With Guts. Away from TV, she has been the spokesperson for the Sindy doll and also for migraine sufferers. 6 The Santa Monica born star played the youngest Brady child Credit: Paramount 6 Susan, 63, has spoken out about being typecast for 'dull' roles Credit: Getty
