Golden jubilee of Chembai music festival to be celebrated across State
Stretching over a year and covering six venues across the State, the programme will honour the legacy of Carnatic maestro Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar through memorial lectures, music seminars, felicitation of his disciples and veteran performers, and the release of a special golden jubilee edition of the biography Chembai Sangeethavum Jeevithavum.
The State-level inaugural ceremony will be held at Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar's native village of Kottayi, Palakkad, on Sunday at 5 p.m., coinciding with the first day of Chingam in the Malayalam calendar. Festivities will begin with floral tributes at the Chembai Smriti Mandiram and Chembai Mandapam.
Devaswom Minister V.N. Vasavan will formally inaugurate the celebrations and release the golden jubilee logo, handing it over to Devaswom administrator O.B. Arun Kumar.
Guruvayur Devaswom Chairman V.K. Vijayan will preside over the function. K. Radhakrishnan, MP, will be the guest of honour, releasing a commemorative postal stamp and cover. P.P. Sumod, MLA, will launch the golden jubilee edition of Chembai's biography.
Eminent disciples and contributors, including Chembai's disciple Sukumari Narendramenon, mridangam maestro Kuzhalmandam Ramakrishnan, Fine Arts Society secretary P.N. Subbaraman, and logo designer Vimal will be honoured.
Poet and writer Alankode Leelakrishnan will deliver the Chembai memorial address.
Following the formal function, music lovers will be treated to a Carnatic concert by musician T.M. Krishna, accompanied by Dr. Thiruvananthapuram N. Sampath on violin, Harinarayanan on mridangam, and Thiruvananthapuram R. Rajesh on ghatam.
As part of the jubilee celebrations, a seminar will be held on August 19 at Government Chembai Memorial Music College, Palakkad, which will be inaugurated by Principal Thodupuzha Manojkumar.
The golden jubilee festivities will be hosted at the Guruvayur temple; Kozhikode Tali temple; Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Regional Theatre, Thrissur; Vaikom Mahadeva temple; and Thiruvananthapuram Srivaraham Chembai Memorial Hall, apart from Chembai's native village.

Mohanlal's resignation from AMMA The much-awaited election results for the AMMA presidential position came nearly a year after the former president, actor Mohanlal, resigned from his position in August 2024. He resigned as the head of the 17-member executive committee over growing allegations of sexual abuse within the Malayalam film industry. The allegations surfaced in the Justice K Hema Committee's report on the working conditions of women in Mollywood. At that time, all other executive members also resigned from their positions. The controversy stemmed from several complaints and allegations from many female actors following the Hema Committee report. The government also formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the hardships faced by women in the industry. A redacted version of the Justice Hema Committee report was also made public, shedding light on harassment faced by women in the Malayalam film industry. The 235-page report noted that the industry is controlled by 10 to 15 male producers, directors, and actors who have been dominating and exerting control. Earlier in January this year, Malayalam actor Unni Mukundan stepped down as the AMMA treasurer, citing increasing work commitments that had affected his "mental health." With Shwetha Menon's latest appointment, the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists is expected to undergo a major transformation under new leadership.

In a landmark moment for the Malayalam film industry, actor Shwetha Menon has been elected as the first woman president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA). Her victory follows a year of turmoil after the resignation of the Mohanlal-led committee in August 2024, which stepped down in the wake of the explosive Hema Committee report that exposed widespread issues including sexual misconduct and pay disparity within the industry. Reacting to her election, Menon stated, 'I haven't planned anything. I am just waiting for the first meeting to happen. I don't have an agenda. I do have my personal plan, but I need to discuss this because this is a very serious matter. And though it's 506 people, for me it's a big family and I need to keep everyone together. ' She added, "As a woman, I feel we are multitaskers and to do this I think it's not going to be that difficult. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I am able to do something really good and I'm looking forward to it. But it's going to be baby steps — please don't expect miracles, but yes, we will be doing something for a change." Lakshmi Priya was elected Vice President, with Kukku Parameshwaran and Ansiba Hasan as Joint Secretary and General Secretary respectively. Unni Shivapal won the position of Treasurer. Menon's win comes during what is being described as the most controversial election in AMMA's history, marred by personal disputes and legal battles. Of the organisation's 506 eligible members, only 298 cast their votes, a significant drop from the 70 per cent polling rate in the previous election to just 58 per cent this year. Notably absent from the voting process were major stars such as Mammootty, Fahadh Faasil, Nivin Pauly, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Indrajith Sukumaran, and Asif Ali.
