New footage shows why Thomas Partey is suspended for Champions League semi-final

Metro22-04-2025
New footage has emerged over why Thomas Partey is suspended for Arsenal's Champions League semi-final first leg clash against PSG.
Partey was booked during Arsenal's quarter-final second leg win over Real Madrid – but TV cameras failed to show a proper replay of the incident.
The yellow card shown to Partey in the 85th minute at the Bernabeu was the third he's picked up in the European club competition this term overall.
Three yellows mean Arsenal midfielder Partey will serve a one-game ban and won't be able to feature against PSG at the Emirates on April 29.
It's a significant blow to the Gunners, given Partey played all 180 minutes in both legs of their Champions League quarter-final tie with Real Madrid.

Declan Rice was left furious at Partey for receiving the yellow card – and was seen going mad at his Arsenal teammate – but why was Partey booked at Real Madrid and what actually happened? Scroll on to find out…
Party was booked against Real Madrid for shoving Dani Ceballos to the ground right in front of French referee Francois Letexier.
It occurred during a break in play after Antonio Rudiger was shown a yellow card himself for slamming into the back of Mikel Merino with force.
Following the poor challenge from Real Madrid defender Rudiger, Partey went to collect the ball to take a free-kick, which was at Ceballos' feet.
Ceballos saw Partey coming and decided to move the ball with his foot, which left the Ghanian furious.
Partey and Ceballos tussled a little before the former pushed the Real Madrid star to the floor, ultimately leading to a needless yellow card.
The new footage emerged via social media on Tuesday, with football influencer and Arsenal fan Rory Cook posting the clip on his X account.
Partey's one-game ban for the Champions League semi-final first leg showdown against PSG is a massive blow for Arsenal.
The 31-year-old is an important cog in the Gunners' side and has been in fine form across the past few months. More Trending
But Mikel Arteta will now be forced to reshuffle his midfield, with the Arsenal manager usually reluctant to change a settled team.
Rice has excelled as a No.8 – particularly against Real Madrid – but may have to play deeper in a No.6 role because of Partey's absence.
Jorginho would've been an ideal replacement for Partey but he has a rib injury.
It means that Merino, who has been featuring as a makeshift striker, may have to play in midfield with Leandro Trossard starting up top instead.

Tony Bloom is confident Derek McInnes can help Hearts get the best out of Jamestown Analytics as he looks turn the Jambos into a force in Scotland. Bloom, who recently declared himself confident that in time Hearts will emulate Union Saint-Gilloise by becoming title winners and play in the Champions League, said: 'We certainly want to speak to the player. 'The manager will typically speak to the player, the head of recruitment or the sporting director will speak to the player. So I'd imagine there's a lot going on there. Jamestown Analytics would not want to have an agreement with the club if they weren't using it in the right way. 'But that doesn't mean, here's the players, go and get them. It's not nearly as simple. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'There's a lot more to signing of players than just the data. That is a really significant part. But as we all know, you can have a brilliant player and it just doesn't work out. 'They've got to, for a club like Hearts, they've got to understand or learn the values of the club. 'They've got to be the right person in the dressing room. They've got to have the right personality. I'm not saying every player that comes in is going to tick every box, that's unrealistic.

World media reacts as Rangers 'cold shower' denies Plzen miracle after Russell Martin 'chased away'

It wasn't the performance Russell Martin wanted from his team but the end result was progress in Europe There were a few scares on the night – but Rangers sealed their shot at a £40million Champions League jackpot. ‌ It was far from convincing on their travels in Czechia though, losing 2-1 to Viktoria Plzen on the night, . ‌ Martin's side came into the second leg against with a 3-0 advantage - and the relentless hosts ramped up the pressure throughout the 90 minutes. ‌ They ran the Scottish Premiership side ragged - but Rafu Durosinmi's opener was cancelled out by Lyall Cameron, with Svetozar Markhovic's winner with 10 minutes to go proving to be nothing more than a consolation. It's job done though and , what did world media think of the showdown? takes a look. I Sport (Czechia) "The glittering Champions League will not be played in Pilzen this season, but Viktoria showed European strength with a courageous performance in the rematch of the third qualifying round. "They chased away the Scottish Rangers, and with an active performance they tried to make up for the 0:3 loss from the first match. "There was no sporting miracle this time, the final result of 2:1 was accepted even by the loudly supporting fans. The Czech vice-champion played the best match of the season and can look forward to the main stage of the Europa League, where they reached the round of 16 in the spring." ‌ L'Equipe (France) "Although Czech side Plzen won 2-1 at home, Scottish Rangers will qualify for the next stage of Europe's elite club competition after winning 0-3 in the first leg." Plzeňsky (Czechia) "On Tuesday evening, disappointment reigned in Pilsen's Doosan Arena. Although Viktoria Plzeň's players defeated the famous Glasgow Rangers 2:1 in the second leg of the third qualifying round of the Champions League, their dream of participating in the most prestigious club competition was dashed. But the fans quickly recovered and now have a new wish for Pavel Šulc to return to their home stand." Medium (Czechia) "The Scots prepared a cold shower for the home team after the hour mark after dominance from Plzen. ‌ "Rangers can now look forward to advancing to the final qualifying round and extending their unbeaten streak that has been going on since mid-April. The West Bohemians, on the other hand, have confirmed that they are not doing too well defensively, having failed to keep a clean sheet in six home competitive matches in a row." Daily Mail (UK) "Rarely can progress in Europe have felt so hollow. Rarely can a 3-0 lead have looked so fragile. And rarely can a team have inspired such little confidence in being able to see it through. "On a tense and nervy night in Plzen, Rangers took one step closer to Champions League qualification but looked deeply unconvincing in doing so. ‌ "This was not the polished, professional performance that Russell Martin and his players had called for as they aimed to secure their place in the play-off round. "They got the job done in the end, as well as a guaranteeing a windfall of £3.7million being pumped into the coffers, with a tie against Club Brugge to come. ‌ "But Rangers could count their lucky stars that Plzen were so profligate in front of goal. On another night, the Czechs could quite easily have scored another two or three goals." Sporza (Belgium) "Club Brugge now know who they will face in the playoff. But, one thing is clear - they will have to raise their level if they are to progress against the Scots." CTK (Czechia) "The Pilsen players will not play in the main stage of the Champions League. Although the West Bohemians defeated Glasgow Rangers 2:1 in the home match of the 3rd qualifying round, they were unable to turn the two-legged tie around after the opening 0:3 away defeat. "Rafiu Durosinmi gave Viktoria the lead in the 41st minute, and Lyall Cameron equalized after the hour. Of the home team's many other chances, only substitute Svetozar Markovič scored in the 83rd minute. "The Czech team will not advance from the stronger non-championship 'branch' of the qualification this time either. In the millionaire competition in the autumn, only Slavia will appear from the domestic clubs as the reigning champion, Plzeň will play the main part of the Europa League."

Tottenham star James Maddison posts heartbreaking statement after 'lowest low I've ever had'

James Maddison sustained an ACL injury during a pre-season game between Tottenham and Newcastle and will miss the bulk of the new season after undergoing surgery Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison has admitted to being left "heartbroken" after suffering an ACL injury on the eve of the new season. After undergoing surgery, he will miss most if not all of Spurs' Premier League and Champions League campaigns, and faces a battle to get back up to top speed in time for the 2026 World Cup. ‌ Maddison sustained the injury during a pre-season match against Newcastle, and was in visible pain while lying on the turf. He shared a photo on Instagram alongside his three children, opening up on the mental anguish that has followed. ‌ "Lowest low I've ever had," Maddison wrote. "Heartbroken at the fact this injury has occurred at this time in my career. With the Super Cup tomorrow, the Premier League season on the horizon, the exciting Champions League campaign & it being a World Cup year for England it all feels very very cruel but nevertheless the ACL reconstruction surgery was successful. ‌ "To all my close friends and family, your support and love means absolutely everything to me. To those of you who have gone out of your way to message on social media platforms in support of me and my recovery even when we don't know each other personally, I appreciate you all more than you'll ever know so thank you. "And lastly to those of you who doubt, hate & mock. You truly motivate me to levels I didn't know I had inside of me so again, thank you. See you all on the other side." Spurs' new manager Thomas Frank will lead the team out in the Premier League for the first time on Saturday, with Burnley visiting North London. Before then, though, there is the small matter of the Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain. Frank's predecessor Ange Postecoglou got them into the game through last season's Europa League triumph. The new boss has strengthened since then, with Mohammed Kudus among the summer arrivals, but Maddison's injury has prompted talk of a move for Crystal Palace star Ebere Eze. Arsenal have also been linked with Eze, who is likely to cost any club north of £60million if he's to move this summer. Frank was asked about the England international in his press conference ahead of the Super Cup but didn't give much away. "There are a lot of good players out there, there are also a few from the PSG team but I don't think we can buy them right now," the former Brentford boss told reporters. "In general, players in and players out, I'm only speaking if something is done or not done. I speak only about my own players."
