LGBT pride banners ripped down on Scots island as police launch hate crime probe
Anyone with information is asked to call Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 0975 of May 31, 2025.
Police on the Isle of Arran have launched a hate cime investigation after Pride decorations were removed overnight.
The colourful flags and banners, which had been put up ahead of the island's LGBTQ parade were torn down from the Main Street in Brodrick between the hours of 2am and 7am on Saturday, May 31.

The case against Jacobs, from Edinburgh, and McDiarmid, from Bonnyrigg, Midlothian, called at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last week. Proceedings against Jacobs were continued without plea to later this month. McDiarmid's lawyer lodged a not guilty plea. A trial date was set for later this year. The match involved in the alleged betting scam saw Livingston secure a 2-0 win, handing the Hoops their first defeat of the season. Jacobs was shown the yellow card by referee Willie Collum for a foul on winger Jonny Hayes as the game was coming to a close in the 95th minute. Jacobs is a South African national who had two spells with Livingston between 2007 and 2015 and again between 2017 and 2022. The star has played a total of 252 times for the West Lothian club and scored 23 goals. He has also turned out for South African club Bidvest Wits, Falkirk, Arbroath and is currently playing with Lowland League club Gala Fairydean Rovers. He is believed to have made football history when he played alongside his three triplet brothers – Kyle, Devon and Sheldon – in a Scottish Third Division match between Livingston and Albion Rovers in April 2010. The 2-0 victory in front of just over 600 fans is said to be the only time four brothers have turned out for the same professional senior team in the same match. McDiarmid played as a defender with a number of amateur clubs, including Edinburgh United and Whitehill Welfare, before he retired in 2020 and moved into management.

Brother of murdered Glasgow taxi boss vows to get justice 23 years on
He believes his brother was killed by three men and has given detectives the name of a fourth – a Glasgow businessman – who sanctioned the hit. The brother of a taxi firm owner murdered 23 years ago has vowed to finally get justice for his loved ones. Businessman Alexander Blue was attacked outside his luxury home in Glasgow's West End in 2002 and died two days later from his head injuries. His older brother Billy, 67, and mum Kathy, 91, are desperate to see the case solved after more than two decades of pain. But they fear they're running out of time as yet another anniversary nears. Billy recently underwent major surgery while Kathy requires constant care. Billy believes his brother was killed by three men and has given detectives the name of a fourth – a Glasgow businessman – who sanctioned the hit. He claims one man lured his brother out of his home while two others were waiting to overpower him. In an exclusive interview with the Record, Billy said: 'Alex needed someone familiar to put him at ease, to distract him, because Alex was a big guy and could look after himself. 'Alex was clearly taken by surprise by someone he trusted. He would not normally have given up without a struggle.' He insists there is enough evidence to bring the killers to justice. Billy, of Robroyston, Glasgow, added: 'It should never have taken this long and the evidence is there. 'The police are quite aware of who was behind my brother's death. There is no mystery about this. The dogs on the street know who killed Alex. 'It's time to bring those responsible to justice.' Alex, then 41, was last seen studying business papers at about 8pm in his favourite coffee bar, just off Byres Road, on the night he was attacked. Police got a telephone call just before 12.30am on June 25. A neighbour had found Alex unconscious in a pool of blood in the drive of his Dundonald Road home. The door of his Porsche was open, as was the door to his home. But nothing had been stolen. His injuries were so bad his mum didn't recognise him when she saw him in hospital. In the early days of the probe, detectives faced major obstacles. Officers hit a wall of silence, with few clues and no eye-witnesses. Police Scotland said: 'This is obviously still a difficult time for the Blue family who have suffered distress and heartache over the last two decades as they seek answers and justice for Alexander. 'Police Scotland never considers cases closed and this case remains under review.'

The grim discovery was made just hours after Alison MacDonald was reported missing to police. The force launched a desperate search to find the 58-year-old woman who was last seen between 10am and 11am. Before she disappeared, Alison was last spotted in the Lighthill area of Back. Earlier this afternoon, police issued an urgent appeal and asked for the public's help to find her. They said they were becoming "increasingly concerned" for her welfare as they carried out "extensive enquiries". Police urged the close-knit community to look out for Alison and get in touch with officers if they saw her. They also asked the public to check their sheds or outhouse areas if they had one. But the force issued a statement tonight confirming that the body was found hours after she was reported missing. Officers added that the death is not being treated as suspicious. Missing farmer Michael Gaine's wife in emotional plea to help find 'best friend & husband' They will also issue a report to the Procurator Fiscal. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 6.10pm on Sunday, 1 June, 2025, the body of a woman was recovered near to the village of Back, Isle of Lewis. "The family of 58-year-old Alison MacDonald, who had been reported missing on Sunday 1 June, has been informed. "There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
