ASEAN reviews major powers' role in SEANWFZ nuclear-free treaty
Foreign Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin stated this reflects ASEAN's dedication to strengthening global nuclear non-proliferation efforts.
The SEANWFZ Commission is leading discussions at senior official levels to assess how major powers can participate while adhering to the treaty's principles.
'The main issue is whether these nations can place reservations on their commitments,' Amran said during a media briefing for the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM).
ASEAN remains a key diplomatic platform to encourage major powers toward safer nuclear weapons control.
'It provides space for global powers to join the SEANWFZ Protocol,' Amran added. Progress is being made, though decisions may take time.
China and Russia have reportedly agreed to sign the protocol, while the US is still reviewing its stance.
The SEANWFZ Treaty, signed in 1995, aims to establish Southeast Asia as a nuclear-free zone, with nuclear-armed states pledging no use or threat of nuclear weapons within the region.
Malaysia, hosting the AMM from July 8-11, continues its ASEAN Chair role under the theme of Inclusivity and Sustainability. This marks Malaysia's fifth chairmanship since 1977. - Bernama

Malaysia set to launch AI guidelines for media, PR and digital content creation
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's upcoming Guidelines for Responsible AI Communication will provide a critical framework to support professionals across media, public relations and digital content creation, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said the guidelines are to complement the country's National AI Roadmap and uphold ethical, transparent and trustworthy communication practices as artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly shapes public discourse. Fahmi said technology must serve humanity, not replace it, and urged communication professionals to lead with purpose, guided by inclusive and transparent principles. "We live in an age where communication is borderless and increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence … even as machines evolve, one thing must never change - human ethics and judgment must lead," said Fahmi in his keynote address via video message at the Kuala Lumpur International PR Conference (KLIP 7) here today. Addressing the forum virtually from Geneva, where he is leading the Malaysian delegation to the World Summit on the Information Society+20 High-Level Event (WSIS+20), Fahmi said Malaysia's Asean chairmanship this year demands leadership anchored not just in authority, but also in vision, empathy and ethics. He praised KLIP 7's theme "Impactful AI, Social Media Communication and Online Education" as highly relevant, noting the transformative role technology plays in how information is consumed and communicated. The minister also highlighted the Venice Pledge, endorsed by the Global Alliance for Public Relations, as an emerging global benchmark for ethical, human-led AI communication. "I'm proud to note that the president of the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM), Jaffri Amin Osman, and, of course, a Malaysian, is part of the Global Alliance board and has played a key role in shaping the Venice Pledge," he said. He also congratulated the recipients of the Asean PR Excellence Awards. Since its inception in 2019, KLIP has been a pivotal global conference for PR and communication leaders, professionals, as well as academics from Asean and beyond, fostering the sharing of the latest industry insights. 58th AMM: SEANWFZ Committee Meets Ahead Commission Meeting
By Ahmad Erwan Othman and Ahmad Aidil Syukri Hamzah KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 (Bernama) -- The Executive Committee of the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Commission (SEANWFZ EXCOM) convened here on Monday to finalise key preparatory work for the SEANWFZ Commission Meeting to be held tomorrow at the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings. Chaired by Foreign Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin, the session focused on reviewing progress in implementing the SEANWFZ Treaty's Plan of Action. Also discussed were the potential accession of Timor-Leste to the Treaty and the long-standing issue of securing the accession of the Nuclear Weapon States (NWS) to the Treaty's Protocol. 'Timor-Leste's participation will widen the geographical scope for the Treaty. 'This is one positive aspect from the participation of Timor-Leste as a new member in ASEAN,' he told reporters after the meeting at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The meeting was attended by senior officials from all 10 ASEAN member states, while an official from Timor-Leste participated as an observer. Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan is scheduled to chair the SEANWFZ Commission meeting at 3.15 pm tomorrow. The SEANWFZ Treaty, also known as the Bangkok Treaty, was signed in December 1995 in Bangkok by ASEAN member states as a commitment to preserve Southeast Asia as a region free of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction.

MACC wins three awards at Asean PR Excellence Awards 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), through its Strategic Communications Division, has clinched three prestigious awards at the 5th Asean PR Excellence Awards 2025, held at the Renaissance Hotel here today. The awards received were the Diamond Award for the 'Best Crisis Management' category, and two Gold Awards for 'Best Government PR' and 'Best Communication Use of Social Media'. MACC deputy chief commissioner (prevention), Datuk Azmi Kamaruzaman, said the awards were a significant recognition for the commission, highlighting that public relations and communications are not merely support functions, but serve as the core drivers of integrity and trust within an organisation. "I would like to thank the Asean PR Network, the panel of international and Asean judges, the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM), and all the participants present today. "We take this responsibility very seriously. Our Strategic Communications Division strives for excellence through professionalism, consistency, and continuous training. "These awards are a deeply meaningful acknowledgement of their dedication and commitment. On behalf of MACC, I once again thank you for this honour," he said. The other two entries comprised a media management plan on the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) and efforts to revolutionise MACC's publicity and promotions through artificial intelligence (AI). Meanwhile, APRN President Prita Kemal Gani said the awards recognised outstanding achievements in public relations across the Asean region, celebrating innovative campaigns and impactful initiatives that have contributed to the advancement of the profession. The event was also held in conjunction with the annual Kuala Lumpur International PR Conference.
