Ola Electric showcases Bharat cell, rare earth-free motor at ‘Sankalp'
The 4680 Bharat cell, available starting today, offers 10% higher energy density and a battery life of around 15 years, the company claimed. It can be used in Ola vehicles, energy storage devices such as solar units, and even drones. Ola Electric also unveiled the new S1 Pro+ scooter, powered by the 4680 cell, with a top speed of 141 km/h and a promised range of 501 km. Its price has been cut from Rs 1,99,999 to Rs 1,69,999, with deliveries beginning September 22.
Ola's second major announcement was a motor built with ferrite instead of neodymium, eliminating the need for rare earth magnets. These magnets, typically the strongest permanent magnets, have become a supply risk for India's auto industry as China tightens exports. 'The next generation of motor technology does not need rare earths. And your company has already built it,' said founder Bhavish Aggarwal at the event.
The company also introduced MoveOS 6, its upgraded operating system that follows MoveOS 5. The new version adds features such as a voice assistant, camera, customisable motor sounds, personalised ride insights, and speed boost. According to Ola, MoveOS 6 will improve energy efficiency by 15%, reduce weight by 25%, and cut costs by 43%. These Gen4 upgrades are scheduled for release early next year. As part of the MoveOS 6 rollout, Ola will launch the S1 Pro Sport, a sport-segment scooter priced at Rs 1,49,999 (tentative), expected in January 2026. The company also revealed its upcoming electric bike, Diamond Head, targeted for mid-2027.Ola has hosted its annual event on August 15 since 2021, when it launched its first S1 electric scooter range. Last year, it introduced its first lineup of electric motorcycles under the Roadster brand, offered in three variants, Roadster Pro, Roadster, and Roadster X, with introductory prices ranging from Rs 74,999 to Rs 2,49,999.Within the Gigafactory, Ola aims to mass-produce its homegrown NMC 2170 lithium-ion cells. At present, it imports cells from LG Chem in South Korea for its electric scooters, according to reports. The latest announcements come as the company faces regulatory scrutiny and a sharp decline in market share. Ola's share in the electric two-wheeler segment has fallen from over 50% a year ago to 16.8% in the first two weeks of July, placing it behind TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto, ET reported on July 28.Financial pressures add to the challenge. Ola Electric reported a net loss of Rs 428 crore in the June quarter, compared to Rs 327 crore a year earlier, though narrower than the Rs 870 crore loss in the March quarter. The company posted operating revenue of Rs 611 crore in the March quarter.
With the 4680 Bharat cell, rare earth-free motor, and new vehicle launches, Ola is betting on technology and in-house manufacturing to regain its edge in India's fast-growing EV market.

Pitched as of one of largest luxury hotels in city, DDA awards first project under revamped licencing policy
In a major boost to its revenue generation strategy, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has awarded the first project under its new Special License Property (SLP) initiative to Fleur Hotels Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Lemon Tree Hotels. The landmark project is expected to generate approximately Rs 10,000 crore over a 55-year period, the planning and development agency said on Saturday. The project involves the development of a five-star hotel on a 2-acre land parcel in Nehru Place and is the first to be awarded under DDA's revamped land licencing policy. Under the awarded project, Fleur Hotels will develop 'Aurika' at Nehru Place, envisioned as one of Delhi's largest luxury hotels, featuring over 500 rooms. Lemon Tree Hotels currently operates more than 110 properties across over 75 cities in India and aims to bring its upscale brand experience to the Capital through this venture, said the hotel chain/. 'DDA had invited bids through a Request for Proposal (RFP) issued on May 2, 2025, for a 2-acre land parcel in Nehru Place earmarked for a five-star hotel. The bidding process, conducted on August 13, saw Fleur Hotels secure the project with an annual licence fee offer of Rs 27.19 crore—about 50% higher than the reserve price of Rs 18 crore,' DDA said in a statement. The move signals a significant shift in DDA's land disposal policy — from the conventional freehold and perpetual lease models to a long-term development model based on annual licencing. 'Reforms set into motion last year by Lt Governor VK Saxena have yielded spectacular results in terms of revenue generation for the DDA, even while facilitating much-needed developments in the Capital,' the statement added. Officials said that the Rs 10,000 crore revenue projection includes annual fee escalations over the 55-year term. 'This new model is expected to significantly boost DDA's income while facilitating key infrastructure development across hospitality, healthcare, logistics, and retail sectors,' the statement highlighted.

‘Investment in future of Delhi': CM thanks PM Modi for construction of UER-II
Ahead of the inauguration of Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) on Sunday, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for its construction. 'UER-II is not just an infrastructure project… It is an investment in the future of Delhi. It will improve traffic flow, cut travel time drastically, and uplift the quality of life for lakhs of people living in Delhi and NCR,' the CM asserted. The UER-II, the CM underlined, will emerge as the backbone of high-speed connectivity, linking Delhi not just with the National Capital Region (NCR) but with the entire country. Travelling to Chandigarh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Jaipur and even Mumbai will become faster and more convenient. It is truly a 'transformative' project for the people of Delhi and beyond, Gupta said. The CM made the remarks as she visited the inauguration site, along with senior officials and party leaders, to review the preparations for Sunday's event. Describing the project as a 'historic gift' for the city, Gupta said that the commencement of UER-II will not move Delhi closer to becoming a 'traffic-free' Capital. She added that the corridor will play a vital role in reducing congestion, lowering vehicular pollution and thereby contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment. 'The pressure on Inner and Outer Ring Roads will be substantially reduced, while major junctions such as Mukarba Chowk, Madhuban Chowk, Peeragarhi Chowk, Dhaula Kuan and NH-9 will no longer face heavy congestion. This will be a huge relief for lakhs of daily commuters,' the CM said. Gupta said that the corridor will begin at National Highway-44 (Alipur), traverse through Mundka, Bakkarwala, Najafgarh and Dwarka, and terminate at National Highway-48 near Mahipalpur. It is also expected to reduce travel time between Singhu Border to the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport from two hours to 40 minutes. The project will link to the industrial hubs of Sonipat and Bahadurgarh through dedicated link roads, giving a direct boost to industry and facilitating faster movement of goods, the CM highlighted. 'With smoother traffic flow and shorter travel time, fuel consumption will decrease significantly, contributing to lower emissions. The UER-II will directly aid in reducing air-pollution levels and improving the overall environment of the capital,' she underlined. A statement from the Prime Minister's office underlined that PM Modi will inaugurate two major National Highway projects worth a combined cost of nearly Rs.11,000 crore — the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II).

Govt sanctions 1.83cr for Vizhinjam port-led growth
Thiruvananthapuram: In a bid to accelerate port-led industrialization and supporting infrastructure, the state govt has granted administrative sanction of Rs 1.83 crore to appoint a consultant for preparing a detailed project report (DPR) on industrial development around the Vizhinjam International Seaport. The consultant, expected to be finalized by the end of this month, will chart a strategic roadmap for both marine and land-based infrastructure. A selection committee will soon meet to choose the consultant from tenders floated last year. Technical and financial evaluations have already been completed. Once appointed, the consultant will have one year to finish the study, though earlier submission will be accepted if completed ahead of schedule. "We are ensuring that the foundations for a port ecosystem are put in place without further delay," said a senior govt official. "The study will detail supporting infrastructure, container yards, logistics clusters and marine access necessary to make Vizhinjam port an industrial hub." The urgency stems from the lack of allied infrastructure around the port. Currently, there are no container yards, freight handling zones, or trucking terminals nearby. Without these, the port cannot begin gateway cargo operations. Land scarcity is another challenge. "We are getting numerous inquiries from investors seeking land near the port. However, inflated land prices make it unviable. Even around India's larger ports, land is much cheaper. We are now prioritizing land identification for infrastructure like truck terminals and container yards," the official added. To address this, the Kerala Maritime Board (KMB) has proposed transferring five prime acres near the historic Inspection Bungalow on Harbour Road to the government. The land will host container yards, freight stations, oil storage units and warehouses under a public-private partnership model, pending cabinet approval. Additionally, Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd has been authorized to earmark at least 200 acres for industrial infrastructure, covering container yards and sector-specific clusters such as food processing and manufacturing. Connectivity improvements are also underway. The temporary access road to NH-66 at Thalakode is expected to be ready within a month. Soil filling between the 1.7km approach road and NH-66 is ongoing after retaining walls were completed. The road has been trial-tested with loaded trucks and streetlights and signboards are in place. However, the proposed permanent cloverleaf interchange at Thalakode, estimated at Rs 360 crore and requiring 30 acres of land, remains uncertain. The project is to be jointly funded by the state and NHAI, but progress has stalled despite preliminary meetings. VISL has so far paid Rs 11 crore to acquire 36 cents of land for related developments. On the rail front, a 9km tunnel is proposed to link the port with Southern Railway's mainline at Balaramapuram. Tenders for the project are expected shortly.. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
