Virgil van Dijk can't help but laugh as he ridicules his best friend in Liverpool training

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are known to be good friends at the club, but that didn't prevent the Dutch star from brutually mocking his team-mate recently
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez may be close friends but that didn't stop the Dutchman from ridiculing his fellow defender during a tricky training exercise. Van Dijk and Gomez once forged a formidable partnership in the heart of Liverpool's defence as the Reds won the title under Jurgen Klopp in 2020.

Injuries, and the arrival of Ibrahima Konate in 2021, have somewhat blighted Gomez's progress over the last few seasons. However Gomez, who has been linked with an exit as Liverpool continue to seek defensive reinforcements, is now Liverpool's longest serving player, having joined in 2015, as well as a senior and trusted member of the squad.

Yet that didn't prevent his captain from mercilessly trolling him during an activity where, in partners, one holds and drops a stick while the other is forced to catch it in mid air.

In the video released by Liverpool this week, Gomez is seen struggling to grab the stick forcing Van Dijk to mock his friend, who ultimately informs him that: "This is on camera by the way".
An exasperated-looking Gomez eventually catches the stick, and then tries to catch out the Liverpool captain with the same trick. However, a consummate professional as ever, Van Dijk catches the baton every time, denying Gomez the chance to reciprocate the savage ribbing he had just received.

The clip is further evidence of just how close the Liverpool duo are. In 2024, Van Dijk went on record to explain his friendship with the England star.
"I think the closest I am at the moment is Joe Gomez," he said. "We've been through everything together here at the club, highs and lows and you know we are very close to each other."
Gomez has also spoken on Van Dijk's influence since the Dutch star took the captain's armband in the summer of 2023.

"I'm incredibly happy for him," Gomez told The Anfield Wrap in 2024. "I can't put it into words. I know what it means for him, and I really get to see the inside and how things sometimes are tough.
"The little things that people might not see in a training ground when you need to make decisions or enforce moments when it's like, 'Lads, we need to be better at this' or it might be timekeeping, it might be different things that you don't want to slip out of place.

"Virg has done it in his own way, and it's made him even more appreciated amongst us as a team. His ability speaks for itself; he's the best at what he does, he's the best in the world and probably the best the club has ever had in that position."
Gomez almost left the club last summer. He was left out of Arne Slot's squad at the start of the season amid the uncertainty about his future and had to wait until the end of September to make his first Premier League appearance of the campaign.
The 28-year-old started 11 of his 17 appearances, with nine in the league. However, bad luck hit Gomez again as a hamstring injury ruled him out for the majority of the second half of the Reds' Premier League winning campaign.

Ruben Amorim warned over 'massive' Man Utd dilemma as veteran backed for surprise return

Altay Bayindir's error gifted Arsenal a 1-0 win over Manchester United in their opening Premier League fixture, and Ruben Amorim has been urged to sort the club's goalkeeper crisis Ruben Amorim is facing a goalkeeping conundrum after Altay Bayindir's blunder in Manchester United 's loss to Arsenal. The club's woes between the sticks worsened on Sunday when Turkish international Bayindir flapped at a first-half corner, allowing Riccardo Calafiori to score the only goal of the match. ‌ Regular No. 1 Andre Onana was absent for the Premier League clash at Old Trafford after a hamstring injury saw him miss pre-season. The former Inter Milan keeper has also been under constant scrutiny for his performances since joining in July 2023. ‌ When asked in his post-Arsenal press conference if he should have selected veteran shot-stopper Tom Heaton, who shone during the summer friendlies, instead of Bayindir, Amorim became rather defensive. However, that's exactly what ex-United and Wrexham shot-stopper Ben Foster believes the Portuguese head coach should do for their next game at Fulham this Sunday. ‌ That is despite the fact that the 39-year-old former Burnley star hasn't played in the Premier League since the beginning of 2020. While Foster thinks Heaton would be the most suitable short-term option, he has reiterated his recent call for United to sign either Emiliano Martinez or Gianlugii Donnarumma before the summer transfer window closes in less than two weeks or risk another disappointing season. Speaking on his Fozcast podcast, Foster said: "This is a massive problem for the next game. It asks all sorts of questions and there's going to be so much talk surrounding it coming into that next game. "Do you start with Bayindir, whose confidence will be low now after the first game? With Onana, people will be going, 'Well, he's not much better.' There's a lot of pressure. Tom Heaton, I would trust him to give me a six-and-a-half out of 10 performance. "It just forces Man United's hand to go and sign a proper goalkeeper. I think if you can get a Martinez or a Donnarumma, you've just got to do it. If you sign that player, it's going to be the difference between mid-table misery or really pushing for that top six." ‌ Despite the goalkeeping crisis at United, Amorim seemed satisfied with his current options when questioned about the situation after the Arsenal match. Amorim said: "I'm happy with the three goalkeepers. He [Bayindir] chooses to get the ball, but he's getting pushed. That is my feeling when I see the play. ‌ "You choose to push a player [out of the way] or to get the ball in that moment. He needs to use his hands to catch the ball, not push players. He chooses to push players and will let the ball pass." Meanwhile, Rio Ferdinand has also given a scathing assessment of Bayindir's performance during the club's opening Premier League fixture. Speaking on Rio Presents, the United icon expressed serious reservations about the ex-Fenerbahce keeper. "What I would say is that it was a cheap goal," he said. "We gave away a goal. The keeper has got to be better. He'll be hugely disappointed, because this was his chance. "The manager has gone with him and backed him and he's had, really, one thing to do in his penalty area and he didn't pass the test." Arsenal plot move for £80m Chelsea transfer target after Kai Havertz injury

Arsenal are considering a late move for Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers as they look to bolster their options after Kai Havertz's injury, according to reports. Alarm bells were ringing when Havertz did not train with his teammates in an open session at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday. And it now appears that the German international has suffered a knee injury, although the severity is not yet known. The summer signing of Viktor Gyokeres means Arsenal don't, for now, have to deploy Mikel Merino as a makeshift striker as they did for large parts of last season. However, reports do suggest that the Gunners are considering going back into the market to provide themselves with additional cover for the injured Havertz. And according to The Sun, Villa and England star Rogers is a name prominent in their thoughts. Mikel Arteta's side were credited with interest in Rogers earlier in the summer window, but may step up their interest in the wake of Havertz's injury. Rogers, who started Villa's first game of the season against Newcastle, has become a vital cog in Unai Emery's side and registered 18 goal contributions in the Premier League last season. Sky Sports is going full throttle this Premier League season, airing a record-breaking 215 live matches - that's nearly double the usual dose of drama, goals, and post-match meltdowns. From Friday night clashes to Super Sundays and even all ten final-day fixtures, Sky's new deal means fans won't miss a single nutmeg or last-minute screamer. Whether you're team Sky Q, Sky Glass, or prefer streaming via NOW, you're covered. And with pundits like Jamie Carragher probably already rehearsing their 'I told you so' lines, expect top-tier commentary alongside top-tier football. And having let Jacob Ramsey depart to Newcastle for £40million, Villa are in no need to sell such a key player and could demand as much as £80m for Rogers. The versatile 23-year-old can play across the midfield and is also highly thought of by Chelsea, who have been linked with a move should their pursuit of Xavi Simons prove unsuccessful. Rogers, who joined from Middlesbrough in January 2024, signed a new contract in November last year, which does not expire until the summer of 2030. More Trending Elsewhere, Arsenal have also been keen on signing a new left-winger before the transfer deadline, but may have to sell first to raise funds for a move. Leandro Trossard was linked with a move away from the Emirates at points this summer, but the Belgian now appears set to sign a new contract on improved terms. The Gunners were also linked with a move for Eberechi Eze earlier in the summer, but the Crystal Palace midfielder now looks set to join Tottenham in a deal worth around £60m. After their opening weekend victory over Manchester United, Arsenal host Leeds United at the Emirates on Saturday as they look to continue their perfect start to the season. World Boxing will require sex testing for fighters before world championships in September

The governing body for Olympic-style boxing will require sex testing for all fighters wishing to compete in the women's division at its world championships next month. World Boxing already had announced its plan to require competitors to undergo a polymerase chain reaction test or an equivalent genetic screening test to determine their sex at birth. The rules will be implemented ahead of the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, England, in early September, the organization announced Wednesday. The tests identify the presence or absence of Y chromosome genetic material as the indicator of biological sex. 'World Boxing respects the dignity of all individuals and is keen to ensure it is as inclusive as possible,' World Boxing president Boris Van Der Vorst said. 'Yet in a combat sport like boxing, we have a duty of care to deliver safety and competitiveness fairness, which are the key principles that have guided the development and creation of this policy.' Paris Olympic champion Imane Khelif of Algeria declined to enter a World Boxing tournament in the Netherlands in June, shortly after the governing body initially announced its plans to introduce sex testing. Van Der Vorst later apologized for specifically naming Khelif, who initially planned to fight in the tournament, while outlining World Boxing's future testing plans. Khelif and fellow gold medalist Lin Yu-ting from Taiwan excelled in Paris under a harsh spotlight of widespread scrutiny and misconception about their sex. The 26-year-old Khelif repeatedly has said she was born a woman, and she has competed at all levels of women's amateur boxing for nearly a decade. Chromosome testing was common in Olympic sports during the 20th century but was largely abandoned in the 1990s because of numerous ambiguities that couldn't be easily resolved by the tests, collectively known as differences in sex development. Many sports switched to hormone testing to determine sex eligibility, but those tests require governing bodies to make difficult decisions on the eligibility of women with naturally high testosterone levels. World Boxing said athletes with DSD in which male androgenization occurs will be eligible to compete only in the men's category. But the governing body also said it would offer extensive additional analysis and evaluation for athletes with Y chromosome genetic material who wish to compete in the women's categories, including genetic screening, hormonal profiles, anatomical examination and further evaluation of endocrine profiles by medical specialists. An appeals process also is available. National federations are responsible for conducting the tests and submitting the results, World Boxing said. Earlier this year, World Athletics — the governing body for track and field — became the first Olympic sport to reintroduce chromosome testing, requiring athletes who compete in the women's events to submit to the test once in their careers. World Athletics has set a deadline of Sept. 1 for athletes to submit to the gene tests ahead of the world championships. The last two Olympic boxing tournaments were run by a task force from the International Olympic Committee under previous rules of sex eligibility. World Boxing, which was founded two years ago after a split from the scandal-plagued International Boxing Association, has been provisionally recognized by the IOC and will organize the next cycle of Olympic qualification heading to the Los Angeles Games in 2028. ___
