First public battery charge and swop station for electric heavy commercial vehicles opens at Tuas
A prime mover being outfitted with a full battery pack at the launch of the first battery charge and swop station for heavy vehicles on Aug 1.
SINGAPORE - Instead of spending hours plugged to a charger to fill up its batteries, an electric prime mover truck will need only five minutes to hit the road again after swopping out its depleted battery for a fully charged one at a station in Tuas.
Located at 5 Tuas Avenue 5, the battery charge and swop station is the first of its kind that is open to the public for electric heavy commercial vehicles.
It was launched on Aug 1 by EcoSwift, an electric commercial vehicle distributor, under a four-year permit given by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to test the technology.
The process of exchanging the battery is entirely automated. When the vehicle is stopped in the correct position, a mechanical arm removes the battery, which is mounted vertically behind the truck's cabin. After placing the depleted battery into the charging slot in the station, the arm will insert a fully charged one into the truck.
A fully charged battery, which will enable the electric prime mover to travel up to 240km, costs $168 in electricity.
The cost of battery swopping is based on the amount of electricity that the vehicle takes from the station. If the prime mover pulls up at the station with a 20 per cent charge remaining to exchange for a fully charged battery, the client will be billed for the 80 per cent worth of electricity, or $134.40.
Conventional engine-powered prime movers can travel up to 500km on a full tank of diesel, which can cost between $300 and $500 to fill.
The EcoSwift station is one of two battery charge and swop trials for electric heavy vehicles in Singapore. The other trial is by PSA Corporation, which has a station within the Pasir Panjang port terminal.

issued the permit for both trials in mid-2024 to understand the technical and operational requirement for the technology and to consider incorporating it into upcoming reviews of the national charging standards.
The battery charge and swop station is jointly developed by EcoSwift and Chinese vehicle manufacturer, Sany. For now, only the Sany EV490 prime mover can use the swopping station, although EcoSwift is working to adapt the technology for electric vehicles from other brands as well.
The battery charge and swop station at Tuas has a footprint of 1,500 sq ft, which is roughly the size of two three-room Housing Board flats. It is able to do one battery swop at a time.
Half of the space is used to store and charge up to three EV batteries, while the other half is a sheltered bay for battery swopping.
A fully charged battery, which will enable the electric prime mover to travel up to 240km, costs $168 in electricity.

It takes up to 1½ hours for the station to charge up a battery. The station can store up to three batteries, so it can perform up to 60 battery swops in 24 hours.
Using conventional high speed chargers to serve the same number of electric trucks in the same amount of time will require more land than the EcoSwift station.
Mr Ryan Woon, EcoSwift's founder and chief executive, said that the roll-out of the battery charge and swop station will enable logistics operators in Singapore to make the switch to EVs without sacrificing time, efficiency or space.
Among the companies to sign up with EcoSwift are logistics company YCH Group and retailer Fairprice Group. As part of the battery charge and swop trial, these companies lease electric prime movers from EcoSwift for a year before buying over the vehicle.
The companies have collected the electric prime movers earlier in 2025, relying on conventional charging that takes up to four hours each time. They can now use the battery charge and swop service.
Mr Hayden Lin, head of group procurement at YCH Group, said that the company has been using the charger at its office at Bulim Avenue in the Jurong area. He said: 'Being able to swop out a battery in five minutes will definitely enhance our operational efficiency.'

'The numbers were growing out of control,' Mr Hill told national broadcaster ABC. 'The government has taken tough decisions over the last 12 months, not always loved by the sector, to get the numbers down and get them to a more sustainable footing.' SIA flight bound for Seoul returns to Singapore due to technical issues

SINGAPORE - A Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight from Singapore to Seoul returned to Changi Airport after the aircraft experienced a technical issue while in the air. Flight SQ600 had departed from Changi Airport's Terminal 2 at 8.15am on Aug 4, 2025 , according to flight tracking website FlightAware. The flight returned to Singapore at around 9.55am, the data showed . The Boeing 787-10 was originally scheduled to arrive at Incheon International Airport in South Korea at about 3.30pm local time (2.30pm Singapore time) on the same day. Data from FlightAware showed that after the plane departed from Singapore, it turned towards the south-east shortly after entering Malaysian airspace. It then circled over the South China Sea before returning to Changi Airport. In response to queries from The Straits Times, an SIA spokesperson said the Boeing 787-10 turned back to Singapore shortly after take-off due to a technical issue. Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox SINGAPORE – All recruits trained at the Basic Military Training Centre (BMTC) on Pulau Tekong will learn to use drone technology and how to counter it, said Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing on Aug 4. Speaking to the media after his first visit to BMTC since taking over the portfolio in May, Mr Chan said that unmanned technology is proliferating and the SAF needs to know how to use it and fight against it. Given such developments, soldiers must now be trained to expand their situational awareness, Mr Chan said. Drone training is not just about tactical or technical skills, he added. 'It's also a larger exercise to train (soldiers) in their three-dimensional spatial awareness, because when they fight the battle, how they apply their weapon systems, they have to think three dimensional, and not just two dimensions.' The first group of soldiers to learn basic drone skills during basic military training (BMT) enlisted in July, and the SAF is currently developing doctrine on how to evade them. The goal is to have all soldiers who pass through BMT be trained in these two capabilities starting at the end of 2025, or the beginning of 2026, said BMTC commander Colonel Muhammad Helmi Khaswan on the sidelines of the visit. The SAF has always used technology to complement its fighting capabilities, Mr Chan said. Speaking to the media after watching recruits operating a roughly palm-sized drone outfield, Mr Chan said in the past, one soldier could be armed with just a rifle. But now and in the future, a single soldier operates not just his own rifle but a suite of technologies from drones to robots that will augment his capabilities, he added. 'This is how the SAF will continue to multiply our capabilities using technology.' However, there are things about the armed forces that have not and must not change, he said. Some of the very basics of fundamental soldiering skills continue to be emphasised, such as the ability to take care of themselves in a challenging environment. Also important is soldiers' ability to work as a team to overcome challenges and how they bounce back from adversity. Mr Chan said: 'All these are important skill sets for any soldier across the SAF, and this is something that the SAF will continue to emphasise on how we build up the resilience and the will to fight for our soldiers.' Training has evolved Mr Chan also witnessed recruits doing physical training while fitted with heart rate monitors on their wrists to help monitor their exertion, as well as recruits undergoing physiotherapy at a dedicated centre to recover from injury. The way soldiers are trained is more personalised now compared with the past when training was done en masse, he said. Mr Chan said: 'When you do group training, you are training to the average of what that whole group of soldiers, or platoon of soldiers are able to do. 'We are now able to personalize the training. We know each and every soldier's heart rate, how much effort they are exerting, whether they can go further, or they are at the risk of over-straining themselves.' All this allows the SAF to be more intentional about how it optimises soldier performance – which it is able to do now because of past investments to apply science and data to training methods, Mr Chan said. There is a 'much faster closing of the loop' in helping soldiers recover now as well, Mr Chan said. He said: 'So in the past, the way we let soldiers recover is very much on their own, but today, we are much more scientific, much more data-driven on how we allow the soldiers to condition themselves, to recuperate and to recover from any injury.' This includes maintaining overall physical fitness while recovering from injuries to specific body parts, Mr Chan said. This approach has wider implications in how the SAF will make use of its finite manpower resources, because each and every soldier is important, he added. He said: 'The faster the soldier can recover, the more optimal his or her performance is, the better we are able to utilise our manpower resources.'
