Cool heads required for Derry City to make it a Dublin double with victory over St Pat's, insists boss Tiernan Lynch

The Candystripes ended a run of four without a win by beating champions Shelbourne 1-0 at Tolka Park on Friday courtesy of another wonder goal from top scorer Michael Duffy.
But they are back on the road immediately as they head to Inchicore where they lost 2-0 in March – a night when they conceded two penalties and had midfielder Carl Winchester sent off.
Having laid to rest the demons of Tolka where he lost his first game in charge back in February, the City boss is now hoping to settle the score against Stephen Kenny's side.
'I think the big thing in this League is always remaining calm and not getting too carried away with the highs and not getting too low with the lows,' he commented.
'As we've said all along, we just need to find a little bit of consistency, which isn't too easy in this League because there are so many good teams.
'We have a massive week ahead of us, but it's just one game at a time for us.
'We have now ticked one game off and I couldn't be prouder of the players, but we have to go and do the same on Monday.'
The impact of Friday's display is not lost on Lynch, who understands the importance of momentum in a very difficult Premier Division.
'I think it was probably two completely different sides of the team,' he explained.
'In the first-half, I thought we were superb. It was probably our best footballing performance of the season.
'We were brave, we moved the ball, we got on it, and probably the one thing we were disappointed with was that we didn't create more chances from our dominance.
'In the second-half after we scored, I thought we showed a different side of us. We got compact, rolled our sleeves up, put our heads where it hurt and showed what it meant for us to wear that shirt. I couldn't be prouder of them.'
Sadou Diallo returned to the starting line-up on Friday for the first time in three months and is certain to be in consideration again following a commanding role in midfield.
The 26-year-old has missed a huge chunk of the 2025 season already after suffering a broken arm at Sligo Rovers and seems eager to make up for lost time.
'I thought he was absolutely outstanding,' Lynch declared.
'He got on the ball, he was brave, he made us play, he kept his calm and he kept us ticking over.
'He didn't want to come off, and that's probably a good sign.'

Man City make major breakthrough on Ruben Dias' future

Ruben Dias is set to sign a new contract with Manchester City to extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium. A deal has been agreed in principle between the Portuguese defender and the former Premier League champions. Dias has entered the last two years of his current deal, which expires in 2027, but City are keen to keep the 2021 Footballer of the Year. Manager Pep Guardiola has seven centre-backs at the club after the January signings of Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov, but Dias has remained a regular when fit during his five seasons in Manchester. The 28-year-old, who is one of City's vice-captains, made 44 appearances last season and has played 222 games in his five seasons since joining from Benfica. Dias' new deal forms part of City's planning for the future after signing 10 players so far in 2025. Besides Khusanov and Reis, Omar Marmoush and Nico Gonzalez arrived in the winter transfer window. Their summer signings are Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders, Marcus Bettinelli, Sverre Nypan and James Trafford.

Chris Woakes joins the sporting stars who played through the pain

The all-rounder entered proceedings at the Kia Oval with his arm in a sling tucked underneath his jumper and winced in pain as he ran between the wickets. Here the PA news agency takes a look at some other sporting stars who persisted and played through injury. Lucy Bronze Lucy Bronze revealed she had played at the Euros with a fractured tibia (Nick Potts/PA) England were crowned European champions at the end of July having successfully defended their title from 2022 with a penalty shoot-out victory over Spain. Bronze had been ever-present for the Lionesses after playing every minute of the tournament in Switzerland until picking up a knee injury in extra time during the final. However, in a post-match interview Bronze revealed that she had played the entire competition with a fractured tibia. 'I've actually played the whole tournament with a fractured tibia, but no one knew. And now I've hurt my knee on the other leg,' the 33-year-old full-back told the BBC afterwards. 'I think that is why I got a lot of praise from the girls after the Sweden game because I'm in a lot of pain but that's what it takes to play for England and that's what I will do. They know that and we inspire each other by playing through things like that and it got us to the end in the end.' Malcolm Marshall Malcolm Marshall batted with a broken thumb (PA Archive) During the West Indies tour of England in 1984, Marshall broke his hand. The West Indies bowler sustained a double fracture to his left thumb at Headingley and remarkably managed to bat one-handed, hitting a boundary while helping Larry Gomes reach a century. Marshall then went on to impress in the second innings, where – with a plastercast on his left hand – he took seven wickets for 53 runs to reduce England to 159 all out and the West Indies went on to win the Test. Bert Trautmann Bert Trautmann played in an FA Cup final with a broken neck (PA Archive) Playing for Manchester City in their second successive FA Cup final in 1956, Trautmann's side were leading 3-1 with 15 minutes left to play. The City goalkeeper was then called into action to stop a cross destined for Peter Murphy and collided with the Birmingham player while making the save. Trautmann was treated with smelling salts and a wet sponge before continuing to play in discomfort with an issue in his neck. Only days after helping City lift the trophy, X-rays revealed that the goalkeeper had actually broken his neck during the game. Tiger Woods History cemented. (📸: @USGA) — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) June 16, 2021 Woods produced a battling performance at the 2008 US Open, where he won his 14th major in visible pain. The-then world number one had undergone surgery on his left knee two days after finishing second in the Masters in April. Woods was limping at times during the tournament, but managed to force a play-off with a birdie putt on the 18th hole and made another birdie in the play-off, winning on the 91st hole. Days after winning, Woods announced he would undergo reconstructive surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and have time to rehabilitate a fracture of the left tibia in his leg.

Linfield set for an-island return battle with Shelbourne, while Larne could face Shamrock Rovers

In a further potential crackerjack of a tie, Larne may play Shamrock Rovers at the same stage of the competition. For the former to happen the Blues must defeat Vikingur from the Faroe Islands in the third qualifying round of the Conference League and Shelbourne have to lose their upcoming Europa League tie against Croatian side Rijeka with the first legs of both those ties taking place this week. In July, Shelbourne and Linfield went head to head in the Champions League with the League of Ireland side coming out on top 2-1 on aggregate. David Healy's side lost 1-0 in Dublin in the first leg and although they had chances in the return at Windsor Park, they drew 1-1 meaning they exited the competition and dropped down to the Conference League. After the match at Windsor, Linfield were fined €10,000 by UEFA for the "racist and/or discriminatory behaviour of its supporters" and €2,000 for the lighting of fireworks at the game. The Blues were also handed a partial stadium ban, which is suspended for two years. Should Linfield and Shelbourne end up meeting again in a Conference League Play-off the prize money on offer to reach the group stages will be enormous. If all that isn't enough if Larne overcome Santa Clara from Portugal in the third qualifying round, they will face either Shamrock Rovers or FC Ballkani in the Play-off round of the Conference League. Last season in the group stages Rovers defeated Larne 4-1 at Windsor Park.
